Phillies have said that they would eat almost all of his contract, but they are going to want some talent back in return. They arent hurting for money, nor is he blocking anyone from playing (unless you think that Ruf is going to duplicate that one season in AA years ago), so they are only moving him if the other team takes on the contract, or they eat it and get a decent C+, B, guy in return.

I wouldn't want him anywhere near my team unless he was basically given away. Too many crap years in a row to believe in a comeback at age 35. Basically a neutral WAR guy at the moment and that will finish in negative numbers again by the end of the year.

There is the belief that now that Howard has all the off field family drama fully behind him he is a lot more focused on his game and is making adjustments that he should have made years ago. While he still has trouble with outside breaking balls, he is swinging at more first pitches after years of always taking them. Pitchers are still grooving first pitch strikes and he is taking advantage right now.

No one knows the future. I'm just betting that this is a mirage. Even if he has improved his approach, it basically just brought him back to being a fairly average major league player. Guys that are treading water at 35 usually are toast pretty soon after that. Thome was a 5 WAR guy at 35. Ortiz was a 4 WAR. Konerko was a 3 WAR. Those seem like pretty comparable players to Howard. Ortiz had a big year at age 37 but they also all generally declined from 35 on. If a zero-ish WAR is Howard at a peak, he's heading towards being a negative guy pretty soon again. If looking at it as a one-year rental guy and paying that price, he'll be fine.

Cabrera is going to be no exception to the trend and we are committed to him for a long time. Just hope he can keep the 5-7 WAR going every year into his mid 30s so that when the slide happens at the end, it ends at a 2-3 WAR level near his 40s and not 0 to negative 2.

The Phillies don't care what they get in return for Howard. They won't get a team's top 10 propsect and they'll be lucky if they get anyone above Single A. As we all know they'll eat most of his money on his contract, but they just need a team to take him.
