It does the same thing for me, and I can't figure out why. I've read people who have the same problem, and read other people who can select a character fine. But I'm not one of those people who buys games specifically to get 1000/1000 in. I'm not going to waste an extra 100 hours beating a game for a higher gamer score, when I could be using that to play another game. The best achievement ever is Little Rocket Man in Half Life 2, which requires you to carry a gnome from the beginning of the game to the end of the game and put him in a rocket.
