thomas
So I'm still thinking this through, but what all do I need? Register my name, and get a venders license? Anything else I need/should do? Thanks.
xxmartinxx
Depends on if you want to be legit or not. You should start a DBA or a LLC, however I don't believe any of the companies that make records require a Federal Tax ID. Then all you need it something to put out and the cash to do it. I'm not sure what you mean by "registering your name and getting a venders license".

monk0nuggets
All of the above. I would recommend getting a DBA. Figure out exactly what you want to do. Do that. Have a lot of patience indeed.
casey
Pressing rights to Codeseven--The Rescue. Do not attempt to start a label unless you plan on pressing this album. The fact that this has not seen a vinyl release is a crime.

Both of these things. You should get a DBA and make sure you get a sellers license. That'll get you stuff sales-tax free.

QFT i emailed pat at fat about any tips/advice on starting a label a good 6-7 years ago. i dont have the e-mail reply any more but it was along the lines of... "take a bag of money... make sure its a lot of money, a few grand at the least. go get a shovel from your garage, go into your back yard. dig a hole... a deep hole, throw the bag of money in it, fill the hole back up, and forget about every penny of it"
Guest afsdan
your first concern is whether or not you have the cash and commitment. maybe put out a couple records and see if you like it before you register as a business. -is the band active and touring? (this really makes a big difference, unless it's a big band and sure to sell) -start comparing pressing plants prices. -decide how you are printing covers/inserts, ie: can you silkscreen?/do you have the $ to get shit printed elsewhere?/etc -find distributors -give yourself lots of time to get everything done. flood
you'll need: more money than sense, a very understanding significant other, and a band that you will inevitably break up a week after the record comes out. lather rinse repeat
forgeagain
Maybe I'm crazy here, but why the hell would you register as an LLC instead of an S Corp? Granted, I didn't take Federal Taxation, but S Corps get taxed like partnerships but you're protected like a regular LLC.....Plus registering costs like 1/5 as much for an S Corp. kyle
Everything everybody is saying is true. It takes a lot of patience, money and time and you'll never get any of it back. Oh yeah, it won't get you laid. It's a labor of love and shouldn't be done for any other reason.
matt
really? that many of you are registered? i could think that the irs would give two shits about me unless i have over 10 grand going in and out thats not accounted for. its not a priority id make unless i was making actual money off records. have fun with it. its supposed to be fun. some make it not fun but at the end of the day and you see a record you put out and even just a little positive feedback it should make it worth your time (but probably not money). I'm not registered or anything. It's totally DIY and just something fun to do, not a business, for me. I don't see the point.
