nick6ten
Crime In Choir - Zach Hill from Hella played on the first couple albums, also the bass player from At The Drive-In up until 1995 or so. Really tallented group. Polar Bear - Experimental Jazz group from the UK Foxhole - Might be hard to find, but they are on Burnt Toast Vinyl, they have a couple of albums on there. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=uB9E37KmsMA&hl=en&fs=
kieran
Godspeed is generally the default band one goes to when thinking of instrumental/post-rock music. OP was most likely looking to expand on that. Really? I have generally always found most people go for Mogwai or Sigur Ros as a the default post rock band rather than Gospeed but nevermind. djones0930
Okay so I have created an alphabetical list of each band that has been mentioned. What I did for my list is put an asterisk by the bands I need to look into. The bands without asterisks have either been listened to already and liked/disliked, or I already possess their music in some format. matthew, I was introduced to yndi halda only a few months ago and immediately became a favorite. Great recommendation all around. Sharkticon, I actually picked up that split at the Mono show on Wednesday! I fucking love it. Ryan, My buddy Chris played me Suffocate For Fuck Sake not too long ago, and that shit was so good. oakland
Well if you are including bands with SOME vocals (like Isis) then I would certainly include Mouth of the Architect in there.
oakland
Also, totally forgot about Euphone. Also, Nathan Bell's many projects including his solo work, Human Bell and Brass Bell. All weird, all very different from each other. Human Bell is probably the most accessible. There's also: The Sorts The Boom Josh LaRue Activities Of Dust and anything associated with Doug Scharin. imaxcowboyx
although they have been mentioned, i don't think enough good things can be said about Suffocate For Fuck Sake. Also, Seven Nautical Miles is pretty good. They only have one album out as of right now (every ocean reversed), but it's highly recommended. oh, and also The Black Heart Rebellion. its not strictly instrumental, but its awesome. That album ruuuules. Sound Devastation apparently ran out of money, so they're trying to press it on vinyl themselves.

smailtronic
Not yet listed: 65daysofstatic, The Autumn Project, Destroyalldreamers, Efterklang, The Evpatoria Report, From Monument to Masses, Hammock, The Samuel Jackson Five, Saxon Shore, September Malevolence, Stars of the Lid, This is Your Captain Speaking, Unwed Sailor, The Weak Men, World's End Girlfriend If you're including minor vocals, The Album Leaf and Lights Out Asia need to be listed. Another good label/distro to look into is Denovali, and thesilentballet.com is a great clearinghouse site for post-rock info.

bizarospeak
Neurosis. Whenever I see Neurosis, it seems to be close to Don Cab -- do they have any resemblance in sound, or is it just coincidence? Total quinki dink. They couldn't sound less alike. Don Cab is spastic, mathy instrumental precursor to stuff like minus the bear where as Neurosis sound like the apocalypse (aka amazing!) They posted a comment on an old blog of mine in April: 4/21/2010 - Hi!Just wanted to let you know that we are working on the relaese of our vinyl. Our record label is out of money and we are trying to find a way to release it ourselves. Feel free to send me a mail if you would like a copy when it is out, and I will ship it to you. Cheers! struckanerve
on the metal side of the instrumental spectrum: electro quarterstaff - 3 guitar mindfuck attack session, they now have a bassist ill second earthless, one of the most spirited live shows out there today, so awesome lye by mistake - weird jazzy infused prog metal, whom went instrumental after a singer departure admiral browning - really upped the bar on their sound on the latest ep, check it out, called magic elixir ahleuchatistas - not really metal at all, but awfully odd, sounds very freeform. its certainly worth being exposed to harvey milk - not totally instrumental, for the most part. animals as leaders - guitarist from Reflux, Tosin Abasi, very innovative stuff i love instrumental music for the certain special quality they must have in order to pull it off, i can't quite put my finger on it myself
