oojavaguru
Joyful Noise is very pleased to announce the 2012 Flexi Disc Series! This monthly subscription features new exclusive recordings from 12 of our favorite artists making music today, each limited to just 500 copies on clear flexi discs. WTF is a Flexi Disc? In case you are unfamiliar, a Flexi Disc is basically a thin, single-sided vinyl record which is flexible (hence the name), and rather obscure. However it is playable on any standard turntable. Back in the day flexis were often packaged inside magazines and even in cereal boxes. Beginning this January, the Joyful Noise 2012 Flexi Disc Series will feature a different artist each month for the duration of the year. All of the releases will be strictly limited to 500 copies on single-sided clear flexi discs. Digital will NOT be made available. That's right, these songs will only be available on these 500 physical units. All of the songs featured in the series are 100% new and unreleased and will never be released in any other format. Here are the 12 bands featured on the 2012 Flexi Disc Series (in alphabetical order): Akron/Family, Danielson, Dead Rider (ex US Maple), Deerhoof, Jad Fair (Half Japanese), Lou Barlow (Sebadoh/Dinosaur Jr.), Make Believe (ex Cap'n Jazz/Owls/Joan of Arc), of Montreal, Racebannon, Rafter, Richard Swift, and Tortoise. Oh, did we mention this will only set you back $4 / month?!? Here are the two ways to order: Standard Subscription PRICE: $4 a month FEATURES: Monthly shipments of each flexi release delivered to your door before the 15th of each month. Deluxe Subscription PRICE: $20 for the first month, and $4/mo after that. FEATURES: Monthly shipments of each flexi release delivered to your door before the 15th of each month. First month also includes a limited edition, hand-numbered wooden box to store your flexis in throughout the year, featuring the amazing artwork of Casey Roberts. catalinacaper
I appreciate the concept, but no digital release?! not even for subscribers?! Considering the number of spins you get on a flexi before it's basically expensive seran wrap.. thats just plain illogical.
shamrocks
someone can record them to mp3 and send them out

selfreliable
It is a shitty format. Decibel magazine gives away them with unreleased recordings on them too. This might be worth it if they gave a download of it too, but hear a rare song on a shitty sounding record for four dollars is a terrible idea. The cost of the flexis and recording is a marketing expense. If they didn't have a magazine that brought in income they wouldn't be giving away flexis. As stated earlier you can rip the flexi to MP3 if you so choose.

I understand the "collector" aspect, it just seems like you're paying $4 for a song you can hear once or twice. Even itunes is a better deal than that. Also, you can play a flexi more than once or twice. The integrity of the ones being produced now is a little more durable than the old ones. deafmx
the bands involved are all pretty awesome. digital files for the subscribers would be really nice though, I can't imagine a flexi rip being very quality.
xen0m0rph
download some mp3's from site.. and make subscription, deluxe one pretty chip
deafmx
not sure if you can read/understand the OP, but these songs on the flexi will be exclusives. downloading a mix of the mp3s won't be an option.
plasma36
Would love about half of these records, not sure if I'd want to pay for all of them.
rtw88
I'm going to assume the person putting this out has never listened to a flexi before or just doesn't give a shit because they will have the mp3s anyways.
forgeagain
I thought he said you could buy them individually too. It's not like 500 people are going to subscribe...or are they?
celebdeath
I got the flexi that Fan Death were giving away with initial copies of Locrian's new album 'The Clearing'. Recorded it on first play and I gotta say the sound quality is top-notch. Can't fault it. Sure its not 180gram virgin vinyl or whatever, but for what it is, it sounds great. Gives some hope that this series may sound ok.
