controlthebleeding
I'm a fan of both. if i'm on my bike or traveling, it's a backpack. if i'm walking and riding the bus, its a carrier bag.
fourfourtwo
I went through a lot of different bags for work and finally stumbled across Chrome bags. They are pretty damn expensive, but they have a lifetime guarantee and lots of great features including a built in bottle opener(woohoo). Good for carrying records too. I will most likely have this for life.http://www.chromebagsstore.com/bags.html I have this too. Great bag.

edgedestroys
Both. I use my backpack for heavier stuff/traveling and my messenger bags for less stuff and art supplies. Basically depends on where I'm going, what I'm taking and how long I'll be there.

mcm1610
I rock an LL Bean backpack that I got in 6th grade. I don't bring it to teaching much, I use a more messenger-bag style thing for that, but backpacks are all around better. They're better for you, too, because you're not yanking your spine to one side or the other.
benchwarmer
It's a little odd to wear a backpack to work when you're almost 30, but I still do. I think backpacks are way easier for traveling, too. I imagine I'll switch to a messenger bag if this backpack ever shits the bed, though. haha. I do as well, being over 30. http://topodesigns.com/ have them best packs. monk0nuggets
picked up a sweet Timbuk2 messenger bag recently and love that thing. Before even seeing this thread, I picked up the new Timbuk2 Command yesterday. So stoked for it to arrive.
igotchills
i got a medium sized chrome bag about a year ago and am probably going to get a large one in san fran next week.
tylerrr
Backpacks make more sense if you're gonna be just walking around. I prefer to wear a messenger while I'm riding my bike though... they both have their advantages. Also not everyone that wears a messenger bag is a hipster... Some of them are emo kids too. edgedestroys
When I wear mine I prefer "stylish but indifferent to trendiness artsy dude". Which is definitely 100% different than hipster. Just so we're clear.

jerseydave77
"Backpack or Messenger Bag" is the worst name for a band I've ever heard. I'm a busy man so no time to read the rest of the thread. Just don't do it. Here's a freebie: Handsome Jersey Dave + Four. You're welcome.
