Best Kurt Vonnegut book?

THE PARAMEDIC thread led me to this thought - I've never read a Vonnegut book. And that's really really sad.

So I'm about to go to the library. What's his best or a good place to start?

I was never as in to his short stories but plenty of people are.

pretty sure slaughterhouse was mandatory in school, or at least on a list of books we had to do a report on.

i know i read it in like 7th or 8th grade for school.

i'd start there.

i should actually re-read it myself, i probably didn't fully absorb it and don't remember much.

Mother Night is my absolute favorite.

God Bless You, Mr. Rosewater is a close second.

In my opinion, you can't go wrong with anything Vonnegut has written. I wouldn't start with Slaughterhouse Five, Sirens of Titan, Galapagos, or any of the collections of short stories.

Breakfast of Champions is probably my favorite and a great place to start. Deadeye Dick is great as well. Mother Night is also right up there for me.

I've read Slaughterhouse 5 and Cat's Cradle. Both are great!

However, it's the only book of his I've read, always meant to read more, but then I discovered Philip K Dick... and it will take me years to finish his works...

But anyway, I'm not sure if it's the best, but it's a damn good book, everyone should read it (as an adult, with no looming book report, fuck that shit)

my favorite is cat's cradle in reality i'd have to narrow it down to a top 5

Whatever Vonnegut book I'm reading at that moment is my favorite Vonnegut book.

With that, I love Bluebeard, Deadeye Dick, and Slapstick.

I liked Bluebeard the best but there's this thing you should do where you read all of them except Timequake and then read Timequake because that might be his best, but you have to read his other books to get it, I think, anyway. Yeah.

OK, I'm gonna try to be coherent now. Bluebeard is his best book, on its own merit, in my opinion. But once you've read all his books and you read Timequake, I think maybe Timequake proves to be his best. It feels like everything he's ever wanted to say is there, but it kinda relies on your knowing about stuff he's said. You dig?

I might be of the minority here, but I really enjoyed the collection of short stories Welcome To The Monkey House.

There's something magic to be found in each story. Like most Vonnegut that I read, I pick up on something new each time I reread the book.

Definitely can't discount Slaughterhouse-Five though..."And so it goes..."

I've only read Cat's Cradle and Welcome to the Monkey House. All great!
