jetsfan4ever80 Posted July 10, 2012 Share Posted July 10, 2012 I'd also recomend a pair of Grados. I have the SR-60i's and they are fantastic. Grados aren't necessarily for everyone though. They have a very natural and neutral sound which I love, but I know many others enjoy a heavy emphasis on bass in which case maybe a pair of Beats or something along those lines would be better. If you're looking for an accurate reproduction though, I don't think you can get better than Grados from my experience. Also if you enjoy a little DIY, there is a pretty big community around modding them. Apparently you can enhance their already great sound with some minor tweaks. If you do any research, you'll get a lot of "best headphones for under $100" and I would mostly agree with that ... with a couple of criticisms thrown in as well. First of all, I wouldn't say that Grados sound neutral. Natural ... eh, maybe. The company's signature sound has always been the sweet midrange and I've always found that Grado gear leans more toward the warm side of the spectrum. I'm not talking about overpowering bass, but rather a slight emphasis on the lushness of the low end. That's not to say that the SR-80is aren't clear and detailed - they are (although transparency isn't one of their strong points) - but I would contend that they're much better suited for rock music than for classical, jazz or a genre where lots of detail is important. Soundstage on these Grados is okay. Nothing to write home about. One thing to note is that the SR-80i headphones are an open back design, which means that if you have them cranked up, everyone around you will hear your music. That's not a problem for home use, but if you're in the library, coffee shop or at work, it could be a problem. Still, if you have them on moderate listening levels, it's really not that bad. Some people complain about the comfort factor. In terms of fit, I think they're just fine. However, the foam ear pads tend to make my ears hot. I've gotten used to it, but when I first got the headphones I couldn't wear them for more than 30 minutes without having to take them off to let my friggin' giant head cool down. The build quality isn't the best. Those foam pads will be toast in a year and a half or two. There's a pretty cheap $20 upgrade for that though: donut-shaped pads that Grado uses on its higher end models and that should actually help with clarity on the SR-80i's. I've actually had the metal headband come detached from both of the driver casings and for the life of me I can't figure out how it was held in there in the first place. I can jam the band back in for a temporary fix, but it's going to take some super glue or something to make it permanent. I also find that the chord is really easy to twist up. I'm constantly wrapping it around the headphones and throwing them in my backpack, and when I unravel them, it's just a mess. Honestly, these are just minor quibbles. For the most part I've been happy with the Grados and If I could travel back in time, I'd buy them again. For most of you kids that listen to punk rock and the like, I think the SR-80i's are well suited to your needs. And again, at $100 they're a good value. They surprisingly have TONS of stuff online... even movies and video game consoles. Anyway, I am looking to purchase some headphones with my rewards - I've got about $240 saved up. I combed through and found a bunch of possibilities, which would you go with? I might plug these into my amp to listen to my turntable every once in a while but mostly I will probably use them to listen to music from my iPhone or my computer. I'm sure the Grado's are great, but I decided that for my listening habits the AT's would be a better fit. Mainly the sound isolation. At work I can have them pretty loud without annoying my co-people. Also at home I can be in the same room as my wife and she can watch TV and I can listen to records without us hearing each other. If isolation isn't an issue there then may be really good reasons to go for those grado's, but if not I REALLY like my M50's. Only reason I mentioned it now is because there are some Presidents Day Sales going on right now and she can save $10 on a pair if she gets them now instead of in a month. Like the Pro-ject Carbon, I love the fact that there are some mods that can be done to upgrade the sound even further. My main focus would be hours of comfort and both brands fill that role adequately. I actually have some Alessandro MS1i's (AKA premium Grados) and modified them with cocobolo cups and distancers along with Grado bowl cups.
