post local bands to check out

Recommended Posts

I've posted about these guys awhile back, a bunch of buddies of mine from here in Wichita, the guitar player Zack also plays in Senses Fail.  They play epic post-rock.

Also, if you dig songs that make you want to party and pour alcohol on people, the Powerlifter dudes are also from Wichita.  The vocalist Matt used to be in Ricky Fitts.

This is my best friend Aaron, he is absolutely inspiring and one of the most talented gentlemen that I know.  He also tours with and writes for Bradley Hathaway.  If you dig amazing singer/songwriters, definitely check him out.

If you have spotify, check out Second To Last (pop punk). They opened for The Wonder Years in Bako when Fireworks and Such Gold had family emergencies. Good guys. You can also buy their 7 inch ep right here: http://quoteyourpulse.storenvy.com/products/469297-second-to-last-vessel-7inch-vinyl They aren't exactly local to me, but a few hours away is as local as it gets for me.

NJ

===

Folly - they are no longer active but they ruled. Mix of hardcore, metal, punk and ska.

One Short Fall - A brother of mine is the drummer. They are a pretty sweet punk band with some Celtic influence http://oneshortfall.bandcamp.com/

River City Extension - I lived a good chunk of my life just outside of Toms River so it was not shocking to find out that I actually know a couple of the dudes in the band. Great upbeat folky indie stuff. http://www.rivercityextension.com/

PHILLY

===

Somewhat household names at this point, but if you haven't heard any of the following and enjoy punk you should check out:

Plow United - terribly underrated punk band. Some of the nicest people you will ever meet too! http://www.plowunited.net/media.shtml

The Holy Mess - local drunk punx. http://fucktheholymess.bandcamp.com/

Luther - a couple dudes I went to school with back in the day in Hamilton. http://luther.bandcamp.com/

OTHER

===

Amish Electric Chair - I saw these dudes open for Dead to Me and The Flatliners at the Lanes. Great stuff and a lot of energy live. http://amishelectricchair.bandcamp.com/album/straight-no-chaser

Darkbuster / Lenny Lashley - every punk in Boston should already know these two but the lack of popularity these two have received is a crime. http://www.myspace.com/darkbuster /

Auditory Aphasia - Key-core? from California. idk what to call these guys but back when purevolume was a regular thing I dug their stuff and it is worth checking out. I only really liked their original demos. http://www.last.fm/music/Auditory+Aphasia

There are a ton more I could mention but I will leave it at that...

These also rule. These are probably already know but whenever I go to any of their shows it seems like I'm the only one into it so I want to spread some awareness.

All Eyes West - Chicago punk. Saw these guys are the Fire with like 3 other people. Despite most fans being PUNKtual for the headliners (Glocca Morra, Cobra Skulls and Nothington) they killed it and played with so much energy http://jumpstartrecords.bandcamp.com/album/all-eyes-west

Vision - Old NJ SXE Hardcore.

The Fire Still Burns - NJ punk that is rumored to be reuniting. http://www.myspace.com/thefirestillburns

You guys go to town with this. Not being a negative nancy. But I feel like I already have my ear low enough to the ground when it comes to new bands. Survival of the fittest will cause the better ones to rise in the scene, then they will get my attention. I don't need to find them when they are still playing in people's garages. The majority of local bands are local bands because they don't have the talent to be national bands (and the others will be national bands soon enough).

Couldn't disagree with this more...

PESSOA (indianapolis)

These are awesome dudes.  I'm terrible at making comparisons...RIYL Moneen, Algernon.

Fuck, I don't know.  Listen for yourself.

I totally read this as "post-local" and I was going to go on a rant, but then realized I totally read it wrong.

ANYWAY:

VonBones, now defunct local band which was full of a bunch of my friends:

Kincaide, absolutely amazing defunct band, the recorded half an album with Devin Townsend then split up before it was finished :P

http://www.reverbnation.com/play_now/song_321787

Unicron, ala iwrestledabearonce... so much so that when the lead singer of IWABO dropped off Warped Tour because she found out she was pregnant the lead singer of Unicron flew over and immediately took over.  Personally I like Unicron better:

Jesse Manason, does live drum performances/remixes, pretty impressive stuff:

Transit, moved to Calgary, but I hung out with this kid here in Victoria when we were teenagers, great hip-hop:

Villains, party-deathcore band with an amazing live presence, I rarely miss a show:

Measureless, post-hardcore back full circle to straight up hardcore, again I rarely miss a show:

Northern, instrumental post-metal:

(not sure why youtube isn't linking right)

Listen to Spirit of the Stairs and stand by your argument.  This band is more talented than half of the buzz bands on this site.  The only reason they haven't hit the caliber that This Will Destroy you or Caspian has is the fact that they are either married and/or parents with full time jobs that have zero ability to tour (with Zack being the exception of course).

Well I don't know who those other bands are. I listened to Spirit of the Stairs. I have no interest in instrumental music. Doesn't matter how talented the members are at their instruments. I'd rather listen to a song with 4 chords in it but decent lyrics.

That's not to say that I don't listen to bands with small followings, probably smaller than the bands you named. I just find them different ways (opening for bands I like, signed to labels who have put out other music I liked). It might be theoretically possible that one of the above youtube videos is by a band that will become my all time favorite. I just believe that if that was the case, whether I listened today or not I would eventually hear about them later when people give their records good ratings or comment on how much they like them.

So I stand by my argument.

Agreed on all accounts that local musicians can be as talented/more talented than those with much larger followings.

Here's another one called Empire Of Whales. Not sure if anyone on the board still remembers my old band, To Russia, but this band features the other main songwriting force and guitarist from that band. RIYL Thrice, Copeland, or Armor For Sleep.

Yeah I don't dispute that there are tons of good musicians making good music that I would love who are just "local bands" right now. I just believe that I will eventually hear about them later so I don't need to put forth the effort to discover them.

But if you guys like to, awesome. My system doesn't work without others doing the listening and sharing at a local level. I was just sharing how I feel about local bands.

Not quite local, but from nearby Long Island :

I first saw This Good Robot when they opened up for MCR back in 2011, and they left the best impression of all the other acts that day. The singer is Michael Ragosta who used to sing in Patent Pending a few years back. But anyways I've had the pleasure of seeing these guys several times at local shows here in North Jersey and also at Bamboozle last summer when they performed on the main stage

Website: http://thisgoodrobot.com/

Facebook: https://www.facebook.com/ThisGoodRobot

music is streaming on their website, definitely give all the tracks a good listen!

They were really great at Bamboozle

I really enjoyed SotS dude, thanks for the suggestion. I only watched it because they had two drummers but I'm glad I did. Digging the cover of the Lambo Doors album they just put out  :D

This is my friend's band, an upbeat indie-pop band. I have plenty of friends in bands and I'll listen to their stuff to be supportive but I have to say OGTL is the only one that regularly comes up in my regular rotation just because I enjoy listening to it. If you only listen to one track, I really like Pericles.

He also does solo stuff: http://alexclements.bandcamp.com
