The main issue is it sounds different in each chorus.

Very plausible. I have no idea what it actually is, but I usually hear "I fell asleep on an incline", which is mighty close – your interpretation sounds far more "Brand New", though.
Ha, I deleted that because I just went to listen to confirm and now I'm not sure again, I always sung that in my head though, before now - I'd never even questioned it.
