i find that most seem splits happen because the record has room to move around in the package.  usually with a double lp you are better off leaving them in the lp and packing the front and back with cardboard in the mailer. 
 
when i pack a record my last test is to shake the mailer back and forth.  if it seems the record is loose i will add bubble wrap or another piece of cardboard.

As always, bearchuck has a solid post. Except one thing, I wouldn't call companies like Pro-Ject/Music Hall botique. They make a lot of money, and make a lot of prodcuts in all price ranges. They've made DD and belt driven... but all of their over $1,000 tables are belt driven.
