highfives got a reaction from ethanpricington in PO: Smashing Pumpkins - ATUM
I’ve heard it’s a character piece, which is why it’s so wacky.
But, this goes back to just how difficult it is to write a concept album, that tells a story, but is still good enough to stand on its own as pop music. If the songs aren’t strong enough, then the story better be captivating. And so far it’s not.
It reminds me of stuff like The Dear Hunter where some of those Act songs, while they serve the story well, are immediate skips because they just aren’t good songs.

Ugh… bummed because I felt these last EPs were some of the stronger material they’ve done.
Depending on if there are extras, I might have to double dip.

highfives got a reaction from Look_mexico in PO Now: The New Amsterdams - Killed or Cured

15th anniversary limited-edition double LP, pressed on brown & white vinyl in a gatefold jacket!
A little pricey, but given the current state of things it's not unexpected.

For those curious about the sound quality of this pressing, especially in light of the debate raging on Discogs, here's my take. I had the MOV pressing, which is good considering how much is crammed on one disc, but I think I would give this new one the edge. Yes, the colored vinyl has a touch more surface noise (yellow in my case), but it doesn't interfere with the music at all... I've listened to the whole thing now a couple of times with headphones, and you never hear any pops or other noise during the music itself, which is a major plus and an achievement of sorts these days. Some people don't seem to like how this is mastered, and it is pretty loud, though I wouldn't describe it as overly compressed. A little more bass would have been nice, but it's certainly present. The only part that bugs me a bit is the opening part of Them Bones... that weird "Ah!" part at the very beginning sounds just a bit off... not sure how to describe it, but in this case, my CD copy sounds a little more cohesive. Otherwise, this vinyl version is clearly more enjoyable than the CD. Instruments have just a bit more room and the treble is a tiny bit softer, and definitely holds up much better when you turn it up. Also, I've always found this album to be a bit of a slog towards the end, until you get to what I consider to be the absolute pinnacle of grunge, which is Would?. Splitting this hour-long album into fourths actually helped me stay in it more and appreciate some of the songs I didn't care for as much. The jacket is a let-down, they definitely could have done more with that.

I just hope they press these properly. I really like the cover art.
The songs they're teased so far sound OK, but out of context it's hard to really say. What I'm mostly curious about is whether they will use a mix of production styles like on Mellon Collie. For example, the same range you hear between tracks like Stumbeline (sounds like a 4-track demo), Tonight Tonight (lush production with full orchestra), Tales of a Scorched Earth (full-blown noise/distortion with dozens of guitar tracks), Love (lots of electronic elements), etc. Thirty-three songs without this kind of experimentation and stylistic range are going to be a real slog, so I'm hoping that's how they approached the project. I think some more raw or extreme stuff would be cool to hear alongside their more recent style.

Hopefully it’s not too long between them fixing the test presses and the preorder. I cannot wait to have a legit copy of YPAA.

If it’s anything like all the other reissues, we’ll see this for a very affordable price in a couple of months.

highfives reacted to mcpherson123 in [PO Soon] TOOL - Fear Inoculum 5x12" w/etching ULTRA-DELUXE BOX SET AT THE LOW LOW PRICE of $810...cuz TOOL hates their fans and someone needs to maintain Maynard's Vineyards
Seriously considering waiting for the price drop though I have been waiting for a reasonably formatted and (I suppose comparatively) reasonably priced vinyl edition for this goddamn thing.
What I would really like to see now is some modestly packaged reissues of all the past albums remastered with Lateralus having the original CD track order and just a basic playable copy of Aenima plentifully available finally for all the poor fucks who are pining for that album.

They sold out long before you ever even heard their name.
Just shut up and buy it.

highfives got a reaction from Mars in Soon? The Mars Volta
I listened to the single like 10 times on repeat on my way to work and I noticed a couple of things. First, it loops back into itself pretty well, so that's fun. But more importantly, the way it starts and ends make me think it not only comes directly out of a track that proceeds it, but builds into the following track, most likely seamlessly.
If you listen to the bongos/congas right at the end, they start to do a double time thing and pick up in speed and intensity, like a short build into the next track. What I'm hoping is they carved out a little 3 minute breather that was a nice, solid tune they could carve off as a lead-in single.
I know they've done abrupt cuts, intros, and outros on other albums, so I could be way off, but that's what I'm hoping; banger>3 minute tune>banger
