Fuck. Hate to keep going in the same direction but could use some positive thoughts. My uncle had a heart attack last night and was basically dead but they brought him back but he only has about a 25% to make it. It's my dad's brother, which my dad just lost his mom in October and his dad in December and now this shit. The Fuck is going on.

Sending good thoughts your way Ryan - hoping he makes a speedy recovery <3

  2. @jhulud I'm sorry that it hasn't been the easiest of times for you lately Juan :( While it sounds like there were a lot of negatives that have gone on, there were a couple positives - your dad BEAT CANCER! fuck yeah! AND your mum was able to get the help she needed! - even if they may be hard to appreciate right now, understandably. I know telling you to keep your chin up is essentially useless - you're smart and seem to be too hard on yourself to not tell yourself that anyway - but do know that things have to get better, if you keep an optimistic attitude. Find something small, even if it's trivial, that brings you joy, and give yourself a break every now and then. And if that doesn't work, feel free to reach out for a much-needed vent session. <3

I know it's cheesy as fuck to quote a book or whatever, but fuck you, I'm doing it, because it's a beautiful anecdote and you need to hear/read it.

    Spoiler

"They say that people who live next to waterfalls don't hear the water. It was terrible at first. We couldn't stand to be in the house for more than a few hours at a time. The first two weeks were filled with nights of intermittent sleep and quarreling for the sake of being heard over the water. We fought so much just to remind ourselves that we were in love, and not in hate. But the next weeks were a little better. It was possible to sleep a few good hours each night and eat in only mild discomfort. [We] still cursed the water, but less frequently, and with less fury. Her attacks on me also quieted. It's your fault, she would say. You wanted to live here. Life continued, as life continues, and time passed, as time passes, and after a little more than two months: Do you hear that? I asked her one of the rare mornings we sat at the table together. Hear it? I put down my coffee and rose from my chair. You hear that thing? What thing? she asked. Exactly! I said, running outside to pump my fist at the waterfall. Exactly! We danced, throwing handfuls of water in the air, hearing nothing at all. We alternated hugs of forgiveness and shouts of human triumph at the water. Who wins the day? Who wins the day, waterfall? We do! We do! And this is what living next to a waterfall is like. Every widow wakes one morning, perhaps after years of pure and unwavering grieving, to realize she slept a good night's sleep and will be able to eat breakfast, and doesn't hear her husband's ghost all the time, but only some of the time. Her grief is replaced with a useful sadness. Every parent who loses a child finds a way to laugh again. The timbre begins to fade. The edge dulls. The hurt lessens. Every love is carved from loss. Mine was. Yours is. Your great-great-great-grandchildren's will be. But we learn to live in that love."

I'll leave you with this to hopefully put a smile on your face.

Shit, you're going to see Murder By Death? I'm not a fan, but they're from here. It'd be hilarious to see a band from the same town as me play a show across the country haha.

Haha, I'm from the Midwest as well! I've caught them in  Seattle, Portland, Palatine, Chicago, Madison, and soon Estes Park. No one is from where I'm at, so traveling is always necessary :(

I live in Estes Park. Are you coming for the MBD shows? I'll be at Friday and Saturday. Also we have a couple of good breweries and one distillery. Let me know if you want to grab a drink or take a hike in the national park.

Yeah! We're heading there for the Sunday show, and just exploring around CO that weekend (if Frontier airlines doesn't mess everything up!) Will do :D

Restaurants that might be your jam in Boulder:

    Leaf (vegetarian)

    Thrive (vegan)

The Kitchen (omnivorous; 3 different restaurant iterations all next to each other)

You'll be coming in the middle of winter which means there could either be 2 feet of snow on the ground or sunny and pleasant. It's pretty challenging to actually make outdoors plan. That said, there's isn't much you can find in Boulder that Denver doesn't already have, minus proximity to outdoors (some good hiking right out of the downtown area). The "center" of town is Pearl Street, and this is where most of the bars and restaurants are (along with a pedestrian mall). Pretty easy to kill a couple of hours just walking down it if you're visiting. There's also some good tea houses and coffee shops.

Let me know if you have any more specific questions...

Thanks for those ideas! Excited to check them out :D I'm used to far more snow than that, so I should be prepared for any outdoorsy things

It may help if you narrow stuff down.

A decent portion of my time spent when in Colorado involves alcohol / recreational drug use. If you aren't interested in that stuff then we won't suggest it.

Any diet limitation. Vegetarian / vegan.

You are going in winter are you interested in any winter sports. Skiing / snowmobile.

i usually go for 4 days and spend two doing outdoors shit and two going to concerts.

Gotcha - updated it to be a bit more helpful hopefully :)

  7. Hey cuties!

I'm heading out to Denver next week and will also be traveling through to Boulder and Estes Park, and was hoping y'all could shoot me some suggestions of your favorite things to check out in any of those areas? From what I've gathered, Wax Trax and Twist and Shout will probably be on the agenda, but if there's anything fun/kooky/interesting to see, I'd love to hear about it! Any advice/suggestions are greatly appreciated! :D

    Some notes:

Vegetarian suggestions would be cool, but any restaurant is fine, too :)

Not intending to smoke, and what drinking we do is pretty limited, but again, suggestions welcome! Dark beers + whiskey are favorites

Won't have too much time for snowboarding, but 3-4 hour hikes/excursions are doable!

  8. AHH!!! Before diving into these amazing gifts, the first thing I need to say is thank you so, so, so much Santa! You did an absolutely fantastic job, and I was grinning ear to ear (and still am)! Okay, on to the unwrapping!

    image1_6.jpg

Earlier this week I was greeted with these two big packages! To deter myself from opening them immediately, I took the liberty of wrapping them up with some shiny paper so that I could tear it off like a mad woman on Christmas morning (not sure if that makes me crazy in itself?)

    image2_2.jpg

Opening the first package, I'm surprised with puffy pink S's and a hint of purple paper! Surprisingly, they were not some space-age delicious candy, but instead used for packing (unfortunate, but ultimately, my belly is relieved, and my presents are happier)!

    image5.jpg

I dug around in both boxes to find some notes to hint at whoever was the sweetest person ever, and came up with the TINIEST CARD IN THE WORLD. It was heartwarming and made me squeal. Tiny things make me happy, and this card was no exception.  I also received a package from Amazon - which you'll see in a few artfully crafted photos - but just gotta say, you, Santa, nailed it.

    image6.jpg

A COOKBOOK? No, wait. A VEGAN COOKBOOK WITH A BUNCH OF WORDS THAT WOULD MAKE MY MOTHER BLUSH?! Appropriately, fuck yes! Thug Kitchen has been a favorite of mine for years, and while I did already own this book, now I can have a copy for my place and also for my dude's, in an ill-fated attempt to make him eat somewhat healthier. Mwahahahaha.

Also, as you can see, I got MORE TINY THINGS. The cutest sugar skull bead! An assumably-native Arizona magnet! And something that sounds delicious and makes me want to tear into it right now but I don't think making my entire Christmas diet candy would make me the happiest of campers. All of this is the coolest and I love it!

    image4.jpg

And finally...I got not one, but TWO RECORDS.

    They are:

Portugal. The Man | Censored Colors (possibly my favorite from them!)

Lil BUB | Science & Magic : A Soundtrack to the Universe (I received Lil BUB gifts from literally everyone this year, and this was my favorite. I got to see her band last year and it was the weirdest and most unexpectedly wonderful experience ever. This record has been a desire of mine since! And it came with a poster!!!)

I know my Secret Santa couldn't have known this, but I received new speakers last night that blow my last set-up out of the water, and being able to break them in with these two spectacular relics of musical joy is one of the coolest gifts I'll probably ever get.

Now, on to the guessing. With my great sleuthing abilities, the touch of Southwest flair, and being an absolute sweetheart, I'm taking a crack that it was @backpackoat in Arizona with the Spirit of Christmas! I can't say this enough, but thank you for everything - you're the best :)

p.s. My nephew was Santa's little helper (not the dog), and he's still deciding if he enjoys Lil BUB's tunes as much as I do ;)

Think I'm finally gonna get the chance to try out the ice cream maker my sister got me for Christmas. Got a mixture sitting in the refrigerator for later tonight...I used coffee milk rather than chocolate milk, so it should have a bit of a mocha flavor once I churn it up & freeze it. Now, just gotta wait for the girlfriend to make it home.

Coffee anything is a win in my book. Much yum.

Mine looks nice all sides but one. I end up with too much extra paper or something. Yeah, I'd lose my mind if I had to wrap a ton of present like my parents used to. Not sure how I'll wrap the once, since the box is 4 feet tall. I guess do it in sections?

Just roll out enough paper to fit the longer side, as it won't work from the other. If the dimensions are too big, I just tape a big section of paper on the ends and then wrap normally, so it at least is covered completely.

I need to wrap my nephew's presents tonight too. My wrapping skills are terrible though :/.

I'm pretty good at wrapping presents (would even go so far as to say I love wrapping them), but last night I had to tackle a large box for my nephew and I was losing my mind. How any parent does that every year boggles my mind

I hate all of you that have long weekends :(. It's so annoying that non-contract employees get from tomorrow off, until January 3rd. We'll be the only ones here for the next week.

Feel for you T - I work until at least 10:30pm New Year's Eve and Jan 1st too! And no holiday pay! Woo.

This year was awesome for concerts for me. I finally got to see a lot of "bucket list" bands, like Neil Young and Sigur Ros, and got to see three awesome shows at Red Rocks, which I think is the best venue on earth.

I'm insanely jealous of your year. Wow
