bjorn reacted to timsimmons in PO: My Bloody Valentine - Loveless and Isn't Anything
So I totally forgot about wanting to compare the Loveless pressings. My digital LP finally came, so I compared the Plain, the 2018 MBV AAA pressing and the 2021 Domino digital.
I did this blind because I thought it would be the most fair.
To no ones surprise, clearly the Shields cuts are superior to the Plain. Plain sounds very good for being CD sourced, but you can tell the soundstage wasn’t as robust as it is on the 2018 AAA and the 2021 Digital. The lows also sounded better on the Shields cuts. The Shields cuts were also cut a bit quieter than the Plain, which I don’t mind.
surprisingly, I could tell very little difference between the 21 digital and the 18 AAA. I have some pretty good gear (VPI HW19 with Grado Gold, Marantz 2270 and some vintage Polk bookshelfs), so maybe with something better or some great cans I could tell them apart.
I think if you had to settle for the digital pressing, I wouldn’t sweat it unless the knowledge of it not being all analog as well has having a kick ass tip on sleeve is gonna eat at you. If you have a Plain pressing, I think it’s worth the upgrade, even the cheaper digital pressing.

bjorn reacted to highfives in PO NOW: Deafheaven - Infinite Granite (08/20)
Totally agree with you on this. There are so many great elements going on but for me, everything was held back by the vocals. That Pianos comparison is pretty spot on as well, as I love their newer records and don't really dig the earlier ones.
I'm down for the rest of this album to sound similar to or better than the single.

I bought a copy of Loveless the day it came out back in the day, and that copy was carried around to parties, left at friends houses and just played a lot. So I am saying it's seen better days.
My deluxe has just arrived, and as you say, it's such a nice copy, and album worthy of treating properly, looks and feels gorgeous. This is how to reissue records.

I'm not even sure what this sounds like (you never really do with Ulver), but the description was interesting enough to convince me to pull the trigger. I thought their Drone Activities project was good, so I'm very intrigued by this.

That's true, collaborations and splits are definitely separate categories, but sometimes it's hard to differentiate at first glance.
I don't mind 2xLP's as long as it makes sense for the material to be divided into fourths (or thirds in rare cases). I get more annoyed with releases where there's clearly no consideration for those restrictions. If an album is just a few minutes too long for a single disc, then gets spread over four sides, in those cases I wish more artists would just adjust the content to fit the format. I think it's totally cool if a CD version of an album differs from the vinyl version, and Nadja seem to embrace that idea.

I collaborations are different than splits though, and if memory serves, both Vampillia as well as Pyramids were collaborations - which worked well for sure. the one with Uochi Toki, on the other hand, didn't work with me.
The Bungled & the Botched is definitely one of my favs., as is Under the Jaguar Sun. The experimentation of the separate tracks designed to be combined was neat, but the band's mix is where it is at: https://brokenspineprods.bandcamp.com/album/under-the-jaguar-sun-chalchiuhtlicue-rain-pwyc. My first exposure to Nadja was Skin Turns to Glass, which is going wayyyy back.
Agreed - 2xlp is totally a bummer for the longer tracks, takes me out of the song.
I will spend some more time with sonnborner, it is overdue.

Sonnborner is what got me down the rabbit hole. It's such an unusual structure for an album, and on paper it probably shouldn't work, but when I first heard it it felt like such a breath of fresh air. Up until then my only exposure was through a couple of their older splits (Kodiak and ASOL), which really weren't a great representation of what I was missing. I've listened to almost every Nadja release in the last three months and a good chuck of AB solo and side projects and added a bunch of it to my collection by placing a sizable order with Aidan. I ended up getting CD's for a lot of it and in some instances that's the better format (Thaumogenesis in particular), but the extra 20 minute hidden track on Tangled is really cool as well. At this point I think Autopergamene is the quintessential album from their early years, and that one works brilliantly on vinyl. I also don't click with splits very easily, but their collab with Pyramids is pretty amazing.

This band has been on a really fascinating creative tragectory. Sonnborner was inspiring and refreshing and really should have received more attention. Not to mention that they nonchalantly put out two of the best straightforward(ish) shoegaze albums I've heard in the last decade (Queller and Dagdrom). I love the apparent pivot to more of an industrial groove on this new one, pretty exciting.

Crystal Coffin's "Transformation Room" is available for the first time on vinyl, and it's limited to 200. This is one of my favorite records of 2020. It's vicious and catchy, but thoughtfully layered and really holds up to repeated listens.

Came across this on Bandcamp. Wasn’t familiar with this band at all but ordered a copy. Good stuff!
