Thanks for the info. Definitely need to check some of these places out.
Not into punk so much but there's bound to be plenty for me to see anyway. Hoping to pick up some rare western releases for cheaper prices and maybe some Japanese bands (shonen knife, boredoms etc) and anime soundtracks etc.

This sounds like heaven to me. I've been wanting to go to Japan for a while now (I'm learning Japanese currently, and also want to teach English there after college), and adding a bunch of cool record shops to the itinerary sounds so radass. Since you're planning on going next October, there might be the slim chance that I would already be in Japan if I get accepted into the teaching program that I want to go through, but if I don't, that'd still be plenty of time to save up the cash, and I would totally be down for something like this.

By the way, how did you get the records back to the states? Did you ship them via air mail, or did you fly them back with you?

Been lurking this thread. Thanks for all the replies. As tomfiend had mentioned, I'll probably just order most of these albums on Amazon. Thanks for the heads up about the Misfits' "Walk Among Us." I'll avoid the Rhino versions.

New records in Japan are very expensive (they factor in the importation costs and have to compete with Japanese releases which have high prices forced on them for a certain number of years due to a certain pricing rule).

But Disk Union is the place to go for very cheap, used vinyl in excellent condition. Disk Union tries to keep a flowing stock policy where new items come in and old items move out, so they price their stuff very cheap. I collect a band called Balzac (also translated their new single   ) which Disk Union puts out their stuff on their label, DIWPhalanx Records. Punk LPs are usually priced at around ¥1000, but DIWPhalanx stuff is usually ¥200 for an LP. The most expensive records I ever saw at Disk Union's Punk Market were HOFX (¥5000), Screeching Weasel s/t (¥7000), Ramones w/obi (¥30,000) and Misfits Famous Monsters (¥4000).

You can find great stuff in their ¥100 ($1) bins. Japanese Misfits Bullet boots, NOFX 7", etc. I'm only familiar with the punk market stores.

One thing that is a super must is the 2nd Floor of the main Disk Union in Shinjuku. It is an accessory shop and you can get the best anti-static inner sleeves, outer sleeves with flaps, cleaning stuff, you name it, it's there and not expensive.

I love Disk Union so much that before I left in Dec of 2012 I went around Tokyo taking pictures of them.

I wanted to place an order of this a couple of days ago, but after i found out that the record company is Victory Records i realized that those are the same dudes from the Akira Soundtrack, so this is 100% a bootleg release. I have been selling used and vintage records like these for about eight months and can say that you could sell a majority of these for a dollar and have zero buyers. A lot of people are buying their favorite albums again, but only people looking for that exact album in good shape are going to pay more than a few bucks a piece.

Condition is huge. Sealed vintage records can sell for $15-$20 easy as long as the name is well-known. Mint records go for a little less. No one wants to buy records that are covered in scratches. You'll have to go through and check both sides of every album because one scratch could make your already inexpensive record completely worthless. Bundling albums by the same artist helps a lot, especially if one of the records is in not so good condition.

Good luck with how you decide to sell these. Ebay works reasonably well as long as you're selling things are that are popular enough. Check completed and sold listings to get an idea of prices. A lot of people think their old records are worth a lot, but in reality they're not worth jack.

To put it simply: Wood, PVC, a metal rod, and some sand.
There are a ton of guides that basically explain what I did, but in case anyone is interested in exactly how I did, I guess it never hurts to have too many how-to's:

Measured the LxW dimensions of my speakers (9"x9"). Then I went to Lowe's and bought like 6'x12"x1" (6 foot plank. 1" thick, 12" wide. Some people who made other how-to guides had 2" thickness). When I got home I cut two pieces of wood that were just slightly (1/4" maybe?) bigger for the tops. Then I cut two 11"x11" pieces for the bases.
I sanded the wood and then stained it with ebony wood stain. I did two coats and then sealed it with two coats of polyurethane to protect the wood and give it a nicer finish. (Sand in between your polyurethane coats!)
I bought a 5' tube of 3" PVC and cut it in half. I primed the PVC tube and then spray painted it with truck bed liner paint. It wasn't my first choice of paint, but I am actually stunned at how well it turned out. It has a very nice texture.
I decided to use a 3/8" all-thread rod to connect the top and bottom pieces of wood. I drilled a 3/8" hole in the center of the top piece and the center of the bottom piece. You would also need to drill a hole about halfway through the wood with a paddle bit so that you can fit your washers/nuts properly. A quick Google search shows an example of what I'm talking about here:

After my PVC and wood was dry and ready to be assembled, I grabbed some heavy duty construction caulk (the kind that bonds any material to any material; in this case, wood to PVC) and put it on the bottoms of my PVC pipes that were going to go against the wood base. This was hands down the hardest part. Trying to get the PVC on your base dead-center without getting caulk all over the place was a pain in the ass. Just be patient, and at least if you used ebony, it's easy to cover your mistakes It was important for me to have a good seal between the PVC and the wood, because I chose to pour a bunch of playground sand ($3 for 50 pounds at a hardware store) down the PVC tube for added weight/stability.
When I had my PVC base centered and it was finally sealed to the wood, I ran the rod from the bottom of the base (the one thats on the floor!) up through the PVC. I noticed that I needed to cut the rod so that it would lay flush against the very top of my top piece of wood. I wouldn't want to have 1/2" of a steel rod poking out the top of my speaker stand. I used a band saw to cut it. (My old man owns an equipment rental store, so I had pretty easy access to some of these otherwise hard-to-acquire things like saws and what not).
When the rod was cut to where I needed it to be, I added the sand. It's very important that the rod was in place where it needed to be because once you start pouring sand, it would just be a fucking *mess* to try to run it through. I used a cup to pour the sand in about 90% of the way to the top. I held the rod center as I did that.
Last stop was putting the top piece of wood on, centering it with the bottom, and then putting the top washer/nut on and tightening. After everything was secure, I just used some of that kitchen drawer rubber-lining and cut it to size to put under my speaker for added grip.

And I realize that maybe this wasn't the right place for this post, and I really did not mean for it to be so long. Aye, aye, aye. Hopefully it helps someone if they need it.
