Vinyl Fury got a reaction from mrrom92 in Meticulously mastered from high-resolution audio files. What?
'high resolution audio files sourced from the original analog tapes' : that means digital, pretty clearly. it doesn't say 'digital' because that's a naughty word.

the Rage Against the Machine reissue was done the same way. They transfer the tape to high resolution digital space and do the remastering digitally.

    Why? It's easier.

But I don't care because I wouldn't buy any of these.

180 gram records do not have deeper grooves. They are made from the same stampers as lower weight records. The only sonic advantage of a 180 gram record would be if it is virgin vinyl, which it is supposed to be.

And techincally, black vinyl is colored vinyl. Vinyl is clear, graphite is added which makes it black.

If a colored record 'sounds like ass' it most likely not because it is on colored vinyl, it's because it is mastered or cut like ass.

by the way, not trying to call you out personally, King Steveston. just addressing the misconceptions about 180 gram vinyl, and records in general, that many of us have.

There's a 24bit 96khz master that was supplied to HDtracks, which sounds much much better than the CD. I imagine at least this master was used, possibly some extra care.

Records should be mastered and pressed so, that they would sound ok on every setup.

It's not like third eye blind has to tell the label it's ok. they aren't on the label anymore. bands hardly ever actually have the rights to their own masters from a major label release. most of the band is made up of different people now anyway. if ETR contacted the people that own the rights, they did all they needed to do. when a band signs a major label deal, they can't expect to have a say in whatever way that music is licensed forever. it just doesn't work that way. major labels are not in the business of nourishing artists and doing what the artists wants. they are in the business of selling their music with as much ownership as possible. and while I like them, third eye blind is not in the business of doing right by an indie label trying to repackage their music. in short, ETR is not the bad guy, if there is one.

Also, not too keen on this bundle. Would jump on it if they swapped the CD for an LP. I really have no interest in buying a CD ever again.

Vinyl Fury got a reaction from vacumecleanerman in 180 Gram vinyl question
There are some good points and definitely some misinformation going on here. But, because vinyl varies so much in weight, color, shape, etc, it really comes down to your experience and what you prefer.
One of the major selling points of 'audiophile' 180 gram vinyl is that it is virgin vinyl, meaning not recycled. This allows for quietest noise floor.
I certainly prefer a 180 gram record for warp resistance and so forth, but a poorly mastered or pressed record will sound poor no matter what kind of vinyl it's on.

Back to Black seems to be more of a 'let's get this on vinyl and sell some more copies' where as mofi is about getting ahold of the best source, mastering at half speed, pressing at a quality plant and providing a quality product. Their remastering of Beck - Sea Change is absolutely phenomenal. I really look forward to their blue album pressing (the press release says they put a lot of effort into making it sound better than ever) and their upcoming Miles Davis pressings.

Yeah, it's an intentional locked groove that creates an audio loop. I thought it was a nice touch.
