How did they botch the call? Tejada never touched the base and never tagged Utley. Tejada was also pulled off the bag by the throw, so the neighborhood play is thrown out since he had to go after the ball. Tejada isnt getting his throw to first in time to get Kendrick with his stupid mid air 360 even without Utley sliding into him. Utley only went off the field because he was called out, so why would he touch the base? The umps handled it right, and now MLB is backpeddaling because someone got injured on a takeout slide that has happened 100 times this season already without any suspensions. Was it a dirty slide? yes. Was it completely legal in the rule book? Yes.

"If, in the judgment of the umpire, a base runner willfully and deliberately interferes with a batted ball or a fielder in the act of fielding a batted ball with the obvious intent to break up a double play, the ball is dead. The umpire shall call the runner out for interference and also call out the batter-runner because of the action of his teammate. In no event may bases be run or runs scored because of such action by a runner"

Obviously this is a judgement call and can't be reviewed. But it very easily could have (and should have) been called. Utley ran away from the base and targeted Tejada with the sole intention of breaking up a double play. That is against the rules and a double play should have been called.

The issue here is it wasnt a batted ball, Tejada was fielding a thrown ball from a team mate, which isnt addressed here or in the rule book. Had Utley slid into Tejada while he was fielding a ground ball, then yeah, he is out, but that isnt what happened.

i still don't see any hard evidence that says the his foot didn't hit the bag. if the initial call was safe, and they stuck with it after review, sure. but there's no indisputable view that says he missed the base. which is what an overturn requires.

This is the angle they used to show he didnt tag. If you go to MLB.com and go to video, search for "definitive" and it will give you the angle for every challenge that the NY crew used to determine. It is actually a pretty cool feature of the site.

the image freezes to show him not hitting the base... and then there's further forward progress on his foot after. i'm still not convinced.
