someone else probably owns the rights to the records now. much like how SST is sitting on tons of old stuff they can't sell.

This confuses me. I know this happens, but I have no idea why. I can see a band moving to a new label with their back catalog, but how can the previous label not be allowed to sell units that they already had pressed?

Or is it just bad/breached contracts?

Yeah I'm not pretending like I understand the situation and I'm sure they did everything they could, but this still seems weird to me. If someone sent my record label (which doesn't exist) a cease and desist order to stop selling records I had legally acquired, I would try setting up a second company to distro the stuff. That way it wouldn't interfere with my main business if someone wanted to get all lawyery on me.

Maybe that is just the thoughts of someone who has never been in the music industry though...
