"Hide" threads?

Recommended Posts

We've been on this new board for nearly a year now (I think), but I still have a hard time figuring shit out on here. Is there an option to "hide" selected threads on this board? So many threads get bumped up to the top every day that I couldn't care less about, which makes it rather difficult to catch new threads that actually interest me. I had to sift through 5 pages of threads this morning just since last night, most of which were the exact same threads I skipped over yesterday and "marked as read". It would save me a good bit of time if I could just erase them from my view altogether once and for all.

If this isn't an option, is there any chance we could see it added? I can't be the only one in this position.

This would be great, especially so i don't have to worry about accidentally clicking on the porn threads at work. Honestly, those threads shouldn't even be allowed to exist, but i guess that's another issue.

I think you could follow the threads you want, then go to that section which will put it together. I think thats easier then to hide about 1,000 threads you aren't going to read.

EDIT: Just click follow, choose your notification and if you want to follow anonymously, then you click on you name on top of the site and click "Content I Follow", all the threads you care about will be there.

Great idea.

I think he wants to follow new content as well, just not certain threads. If I only read followed content, I couldn't pick up anything new.

Is there workplaces that don't mind you browsing VC during the day but would be upset if you accidentally clicked the Boob thread? Or are you just worried someone will see over your shoulder?

I'm legitimately curious.

Pretty sure EVERYONE given a computer at their workplace signs an agreement not to view porn. Easily a fireable offence. You don't sign a "no VC" agreement. If your boss was over your shoulder watching you type in the Man Advice thread would he be happy? Probably not. But I can see it being overlooked if someone is getting their shit done everyday. It's only when someone isn't getting their work done that the boss usually pulls the internet records and prepares to have the talk with you...

My boss' office is right next to mine, seperated by a door she rarely closes. If I've been on VC, DF, ebay, all day, I tend to switch screens when she gets up because I'm overly cautious  (though not cautious enough to just do my work, amirite?).

Probably biggest factor is just how big your employer is. A really big company or a government agency might just outright block all message boards and say "if you think that this site is necessary to perform a work function, email this person" or something similar.

But I would kinda do the same thing all last summer. I jailbroke my iphone, brought in my personal laptop, tethered, and would keep track of baseball scores all day. Told myself when I go back (last summer was internship, in 2 weeks I am a full tiime employee) I am just going to leave the laptop at home and not even put myself around the temptation. If I really need to see something on the internet, I will sit in the stall for 5 minutes and use my phone.

I appreciate the the boobs and butts threads, but I agree 100% that they don't belong here. Again, great stuff, but on top of the workplace shenanigans its definitely tacky and often times leads to demeaning and objectifying statements. Shit like that probably makes some ladies not want to post here (or maybe even get into collecting?) and that's a lame reason. They should not want to post here because this place sucks and is a total shithole.

Nah, this place is cool, but yeah, just food for thought?

I attribute the lack of ladies here to the same reason that there is a 10 to 1 guy to girl ratio at every show I go to -- They just tend to be into top 40 music and country more than indie / punk rock, which is the type of music that is most likely lead to being a vinyl collector vs. an Ipod person.

Obviously exceptions to the rule. But on a population level, it's true. Not sure why they tend to like different music. Genetic? Social? But that's my analysis.

Boob thread is gone. Started it as a joke a long time ago and it was never intended to go NSFW, be degrading, or offend anyone.

I removed it as the OP, not as a moderator. If you guys want the Ass thread gone I suggest you contact the OP, other mods (because I'm down for whatever you guys want) and ask them for their opinions, or go old school and file a complaint if you're offended by it.

I don't think the female member ratio will increase because we've consistently had 5-10 active females users at the most for years (even on the old boards), however, just because they are the minority doesn't mean they need to feel like they're the minority.

I think the board is better without those threads (I've never had trouble finding an adequate supply of boobs on the internet, we don't have to have them here if they are bothering some people).

However, seems kinda lame to just delete a thread that others put hundreds of posts into because you made the OP so you have the right in the system's mind. I would think that when you create a "community" thread (versus a private thread, like a FS post or a post about a personal story) that it's kinda owned collectively and not by the OP.

I don't know. Not trying to be a contrarion. Just think that when a thread hits the category of being a "staple" that it shouldn't be deleted based on a single user's opinion, which is how that post comes off.

The posts still register in you count regardless if a thread was deleted. Never understood why those "body parts" appreciation threads were controversial. The Ultimate Manly Man Thread (http://boards.vinylcollective.com/topic/4812-ultimate-manly-man-thread/page-141) had boobs and all sorts of way more degrading comments on there for years. I also see way more degrading comments in other threads that get derailed by (insert hot actress/model/Kate Upton here). Not sure if people shit on that thread as much as the appreciation ones. You didn't have to click on them. It was in the everything else section after all.

As for female post ratio I agree with Lebowski. I feel a lot more girls like top 40 stuff, especially outside big cities. Also I'm sure there are a bunch of girl We The Kings fans and 30 Seconds To Mars that don't post here. Collecting is more male dominated right? I have no problem with anyone who identifies with any gender or no gender at all collecting. I think theres just a natural demographic with what on VC and collecting in general. I'm also among the "blackest" person at shows too...unless theres someone 100% black there as I am only half. How many people on this board look like TeenageEric?

^ TL:DR - Boobs and Ass don't scare the girls away. CREEPY PM'S DO!

No big deal otherwise. RIP Boobies thread. Fun to look at/post in. VC is still VC. My 2 cents.

I disagree. Any OP (moderator or not) has the right/ability to delete any thread they start. Check a topic you've started, it's at the bottom under Topic Moderation. It's there for a reason and people should use it as they choose.

PS: I have the ability to restore the thread, but in all honesty it got a bit out of hand. I just wanted cleavage not full on bubs, and like I said, it was originally a joke. I don't really want to be associated with what it became and haven't for quite sometime. Sorry if anyone feels like they wasted their time posting in that thread.

I get how the system is set up. I just think that (using an example that isn't a controversial thread) even though Travis started the MLB Discussion thread, it's not "his" thread to delete or do what he wishes with. It belongs to the group because they have built it up with 500 pages of posts. Would clearly be a dick move if he deleted it (which he wouldn't).

The baseball thread example is a clearer case than the boobs thread, which falls into a grey area. I get it. I'm not upset that it is gone. The system can't recognize that at some point, the OP shouldn't be able to delete for certain "key" threads. And it's not a big deal because people aren't going around deleting "terrible sellers" or "post your collection".

I guess I'll just say that the OP in this thread had a better idea (in my opinion) than deleting threads, which is the ability to remove them from your front page. That is the solution that would make everyone happy.

And just for completeness, I know it was a different time in VC as far as level of moderation but the "manly man thread" and "boobs appreciation thread" are still not as obscene as the number of threads that had that anatomical picture of a vagina in someone's signature. Yeah, you can block sigs. But that was FAR more likely to cause an uncomfortable moment when your boss walks by than the boobs thread being accidentally clicked.
