Glad you joined in Don! This thread was missing you! This thread is the reason I've joined in on all the Damascus fun in the PO thread. Love that band! Thanks to Derek.

Currently listening to Sisters Of...

Midway through the first song & I can tell this band is in my wheelhouse.

I think I want this Khaldera on vinyl before Sisters Of... (it's great, but I'm going to give it some more listens - seems to sound a lot better when reading the 'disentization and condoms' thread) :P

http://khaldera.bandcamp.com/

Aaron Harris posted on his twitter feed a couple of months back. Chris Common mastered it. 4 tracks. 29 minutes.

Give it a go all the way through.  It doesn't hit you right up front like Damascus or Sisters Of..

Pure butter.

You® thoughts!

Same deal, more or less. Not a bad listen by any means, but I found myself wondering when the track would end, about halfway through each one. The last four minutes of the final song are pretty awesome, though. All in all they strike as me as a slower, less interesting version of Toundra. I'll have to revisit it to see if that opinion changes.

Thanks for listening guys and the honest opinions, didn't think they would be up AtE's alley but maybe Derek.

The production was what grabbed my ears first - incredible - and it took a good 5 or 6 listens for the simmer/drone they have going (kind of like Chelsea Wolfe's hypnotic two chord repetitions) to start to take root.

I am starting to dig the Sisters Of..  after a couple of more times through. "The Tenth Listen" was a username someone had in a forum, and there is a lot of truth in that for me.

I'll post a more EXHAUSTIVE list this weekend, when I go through this thread once more and write down all the stuff I need to check out as well. Oh joy.

Just got one from Will Hough on twitter, Latvian Post Rock, only once through so far which was decent, and he reminded me of a group of youngsters from a couple of years ago I bought mp3s and forgot about, "Barrows" Imprecari Island, which is now free. Don't know if they're shaving yet, but can crank out some jamz.

And I don't remember seeing Jakob on here. If they are an 'understood' like Mogwai, EiTS OK, I'll forgive  ;)

I'm about a song and a half through & I'm for sure digging this. "Quasar" sounds like this band's remix of "They Speak With Knives" by ITTCT, but in a good way!

Really liking what I've heard so far!

Pretty much Balmorhea.  So much Balmorhea.

king may not go there, but my daughter loves everything Balmorhea and more classical and sadly defunct Rachel's. (The Sea And The Bells, Music for Egon Schiele and Selenography) http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Rachel's

You already checked out Evpatoria - I have to listen to them all the way through, and Taijin Kyofusho never fails to destroy me with those samples (friend of a friend of Rick Husband's). 11 year anniversary of the Columbia disaster coming up soon

If you like the mellow and jazzish tones of The Mercury Program, Signal Hill http://sunseasky.bandcamp.com/album/chase-the-ghost would be a great opener for them, and BoS Leaves and Scars would be a 2nd set of my choosing.

i cant believe i forgot Daturah

Why do all my favorites disband? Vertex off Reverie - such addictive riffs -- goosebumps when the overdrive/gain guitars kick in.

This thread is perfect.

I second the The Evaptoria Report suggestion.

...Maserati (AWESOME).

...The Seven Mile Journey

Amen, all things Maserati, especially Jerry Fuch's era and his one-handed drum fills. I only have a few concert video's downloaded, but if you like Maserati at all, this set from Knoxville is a favorite:  http://youtu.be/AB074pjQJpY and click through to the link in the description portion.

The Seven Mile Journey beatingheart.gif I can't believe someone actually posted them, they are in my top 10 all-time favorites, and again, like The Evpatoria report - start to finish, uninterrupted, headphones, dark room, good wine, kids in bed, no interruptions. Can be eerie in places, Godspeed-esque. A 3 hr. total body experience. I'm not sure if the OP would get into them, though - this is a selfish, mutual admiration society post 1Applause.gif I actually save them for maybe 3 to 4 times per year, so not to burn them out, though Nicolai says they are working on new material. They are on about an album per 3 year cycle, so they would be due this year (fingers crossed)

No love for my favorite instrumental/math/prog/space band The Cancer Conspiracy?

http://en.m.wikipedia.org/wiki/The_Cancer_Conspiracy

Much love here, brah! Audio Medium seems to fit in the 'prog' bucket to me.  I just keep neglecting to pick up the vinyl for this and Omega.

Glad you found something redeeming the first pass through. I would not have thought of They Speak With Knives, but listening now, I can pick up what you're getting with it. And the price is right. Put ISIS and TAAS drummers behind the machines - I think they have ears that seem to reverberate with mine.

Going through the thread, I bookmarked 18 (XVIII) bands to check out :o

Second Rachel's. Jason Noble (RIP) is a musician who is definitely worth listening to. Rodan and Shipping News are two of the best bands ever. Not instrumental and not post rock though.

Rusty by Rodan is a must if you have any interest in amazing instrumentation or just awesome shit in general. Sorry to taint the instrumental thread but god damn I love this band.

Ah, I see Jakob page by the the OP!

Will try to chip in some 'new' that I haven't seen on this thread, but likely not new to the regulars or even kingofthegutters. Heaviest to lightest imo.

Year Of No Light:  I think OP posted on the Tocsin preorder thread. I would recommend Ausserwelt Track 1, and listen to that at least 10 times, and if that gains some traction without being too heavy and feeling good posty vibes, then finish the album tracks 2, 3, 4.  Tocsin to my ears is heavier but still great, especially the finisher. But it still has not prepared my tender ears for the downtuned, downtempo Omega Massif quite yet

Did Hourvari get omitted by accident Derek, or did I miss them? http://hourvari.bandcamp.com/  I cannot believe I forgot to order  it from DW with the Death Of Lovers preorder recently, ugh.

Kerretta from NZ, start with Vilayer  http://kerretta.bandcamp.com/album/vilayer tracks The Square Outside and Maven Fade if you're in a hurry

Meniscus Absence of I  http://meniscusmusic.bandcamp.com/album/absence-of-i-european-tour-edition   you'll know right fast; I love them, especially the bassist

The Shaking Sensations from Denmark http://theshakingsensations.bandcamp.com/  actually I have vinyl coming thanks to a great guy over there who I've been trading with and helping get US only stuff; new to me, nothing ground-breaking, but just so tight and well-executed

Have you checked CUTE's labelmate, Colaris? (you got my vinyl Fragments... before I could even listen to it!) Maybe not as 'refined' postrock as CUTE, but I like their edge and Jessie is very eager to reach out/answer questions  http://colaris.bandcamp.com/  I got Renewal the same time as Fragments, GIAA and some other distro stuff when Christoph was basically giving a free shipping deal. Robotic Empire now has their split with Ampersphere for $12.

While we're still in Germany, check out Milhaven, at least track one of Automata and their S/T http://milhaven.bandcamp.com/  The other 2 were growers for me, starting off as background music while doing paperwork. I'm surprised to here at least something of Kokomo didn't hit with you, even the split with Kasan.

No one mentioned Laura - (Radio Swan Is Down is hands down my favorite), may not be your cuppa, hard to say http://lauraisnotaband.bandcamp.com/album/radio-swan-is-down

hazards of swimming naked (another Oceania band) is very accessible/listenable, and sound like GIAA in some tracks; Kip Keino is cool history with great samples from '68 Olympics. Our Line Are Down http://hazardsofswimmingnaked.bandcamp.com/album/our-lines-are-down

If you like toe (and yes, Takashi is a kit beast), the more mathy yet melodic, LITE may also catch your ear as well. I like Filmlets a ton: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=vLGz-Bo-cO4  I think you will enjoy this.

This post is getting too long, sorry, a couple more:

East Of the Wall Farmer's Almanac (purely instrumental) you will be surprised, nothing like their split with Rosetta/YONL or their latest, and is available on vinyl at Nefarious Records. Listen here:  http://eastofthewall.bandcamp.com/

chill:

Silent Whale Becomes A Dream http://youtu.be/B7j4tXYJRmQ As Walking on Canopy, 15 minutes, you probably already know them, but no one mentioned yet so I felt obliged

Your Ten Mofo http://youtu.be/BYPjLUI0sh4 I Think We May Be Alone Now, 14 min, almost a Sigur Ros vibe, maybe just me?

OK, that's way too much, but I will likely be listening for a solid week or two  :)

Don is an encyclopedia of instrumental music haha.

I can't believe no one else was digging Khaldera. First two songs were tame but "...Unbearable" & "Quasar" are beasts. That riffage in the 2nd half of "Unbearable" is monsterous. I love the darker spectrum of instrumental stuff like this. I feel like these guys are good complimentary pieces to bands like Glaciers & Lavinia, even Russian Circles' latest.

I hope someone checked out one of my earlier suggestions, jakeL. Production-wise it sounds pretty low budget, but I think this is another one of those "one guy does it all" deals, ala Cloudkicker. I could be wrong but I thought I read that somewhere. I feel like you can pick up on jakeL's unique sound pretty quickly. My favorite song is "You are not alone, said the universe". The only band I can make a small comparison to is Jakob, which I know Don should like :)

I think our ears on the same wavelength on Khaldera and I look it at as one track broken up into 4 sections, the earlier repetitions leading up to the payoff at the end -- but you know how subjective this all is. As an example, after my first couple of listens to Valtari I thought there was zero grower potential at all, and almost the same for pg.lost's Key (after the first 3 or 4 tracks). Gave them a while to cool for a bit and revisited them, and both are great listens now.

I'm really curious to find out more about Khaldera and if Harris and Common think they are the real deal- did they record this 'live' - or is this way overproduced to perfection.

Aaron Harris mixed Jakob's record that looks like it will see the light of day in 2014 :)  He definitely has a gift imho, and I can't wait to hear the Sargent House (not instrumental) that Chris Common played a big part in this year (Helms Alee, Emma Ruth Rundle's solo, etc)

Agreed, those AudioTree sessions are great!  Interesting to hear Caspian members influences and favorite concerts.

Now I'm up to 19 - will add jakeL to my list and start with him later this evening.
