timbrh2001
Luckily I don't care about their lyrics or their lyrical content at all, although "Yours is no disgrace" is probably the best Vietnam War song written. They're all virtuosos, and if this topic were serious, Steve Howe would be in the running. He's a zombie and can still kick the ass of almost any living guitarist. Best Vietnam song ever written is CCR's Fortunate Son, IMO. Lyrics still ring true today.
almightyseancore
Here you go kids. I'm sure you don't have the attention span for the entire thing so just watch from about 10:45-12:15 and watch the greatest living guitarist do his thing. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=OCE4oqesLnA this is a pretty solid example on this topic as well. trey is an outstaning musician, as is the rest of the band. their songs might be a little meh from time to time, but the musicianship is always phenomenal. i have much respect for these guys. timbrh2001
Here you go kids. Trey Anastasio explaining and sampling his guitar rig in detail. You start to see what you're up against when you're trying to make a million different sounds during the course of a concert. If you're a guitarist, I think you'll find this pretty interesting. Youinreverse
J Mascis is my choice. Probably one of the most underrated guitarists along with Doug Martsch I'm with you on both of these.

Team Avatar
okay but actually how can you ever compare guitar players like this. people play different styles and it can be very hard to compare. sungha jung is probably the best guitar player of our time and his videos are proof. You don't get it and that's your loss. All 4 are brilliant musicians. To be able to combine all of that ability into 1 entity is about as good as it gets in regards to American rock music. Did you watch those Trey guitar rig videos? Every other band member has a rig setup video too and they're all equally as impressive.

drds89
If this thread were called "Greatest guitarist of some other generation", then Robert Fripp. [YES]...They're all virtuosos, and if this topic were serious, Steve Howe would be in the running. timbrh2001
phish people are legit the worst, sorry tim. It's music, the "people around the band" hold no bearing on their music. Hell, if you want to talk that way then Id most certainly rather hang out with hippies than a bunch of teenie bopper pop punkers that this board is massively polluted with.
