I've been a CPA for 20+ years for what it's worth and it's the only reason I am even chiming in as I don't post much. I don't really think there is even any real dispute amongst members here, just a lot of confusion, understandably.  It boils down to two options. Slap the gross amount of your 1099 figure on page 1 and forget about related expenses...or roll the dice and call yourself a business and prepare a Schedule C even though there is about a zero chance it would hold up under audit.

Again, this is letter of the law stuff. The odds anyone gets audited over it is even more unlikely than your hobby being approved as a business. I know of many people that file rather egregious Schedule C  figures for their legit businesses year over year without consequence. I once had to do one for myself that was correct but looked absolutely insane and had no issue. It's just not their focus. But also not worth the risk for a variety of reasons.

    From Matador:
    Release date: 11th February 2022
Spoon’s tenth album, Lucifer on the Sofa, is the band’s purest rock ’n roll record to date. Texas-made, it is the first set of songs that the quintet has put to tape in its hometown of Austin in more than a decade. Written and recorded over the last two years – both in and out of lockdown – these songs mark a shift toward something louder, wilder, and more full-color.

From the detuned guitars anchoring “The Hardest Cut,” to the urgency of “Wild," to the band’s blown-out cover of the Smog classic “Held,” Lucifer on the Sofa bottles the physical thrill of a band tearing up a packed room. It’s an album of intensity and intimacy, where the music’s harshest edges feel as vivid as the directions quietly murmured into the mic on the first-take. According to frontman Britt Daniel, “It’s the sound of classic rock as written by a guy who never did get Eric Clapton.”

This Bull Moose shit has me so sad, and also angry as fuck. I've spent thousands of dollars there, including hundreds of visits to the Salem locations (new and old).

Regarding the mask piece of the equation: it sounds like a large number of the Salem store staff are not yet vaccinated. I've heard tell of at least one of them that isn't and (IIRC) has to help care for their very old grandmother who cannot get vaccinated.

[aside: Salem, NH is a particularly interesting place with, shall I say, special retail challenges. I know this from having worked at the Apple Store up the road from Bull Moose for a couple of years. it's right on the NH/MA border, and because NH doesn't have sales tax, people will drive to NH to save that sweet 6.25%, especially on big purchases like computers in the case of Apple, but also a lot of I'll be kind and say "frugal" peeps will go buy a ton of records at once on a Bull Moose/Newbury trip. Also a heck of a lot of people in southern NH are MA expats who wanted to move to NH for "muh freedoms" and whatnot, particularly in Salem because it's right on the highway to Boston for those people who still work in Boston but think they're being oppressed in MA (I always think this is hilarious because these people pay MA income tax but also the way higher property tax/other local taxes that make up for the fact that NH doesn't have income tax so they're actually kinda getting screwed on both ends, but again, "muh freedoms!" lol). What I'm saying that approximately 2/3 of the people shopping in Salem, which has a mall and miles of strip mall, are either raving assholes or willing to make a scene and start screaming and utterly humiliate a retail worker at the drop of a dime. it sucks ass working in that town.]

So anyway, there's a more-than-acceptable number of people who go to the Salem Bull Moose and in the past year have been shitty about wearing a mask, have complained when asked to put one on, have complained about having to wait outside due to the capacity limit, etc. I've seen it firsthand every time I've gone there in the past year. There are absolutely a lot of people who will go there and say "the CDC says I don't have to wear a mask if I'm fully vaccinated and I'm fully vaccinated so I'm not wearing a mask" and will be lying about being vaccinated. It is absolutely a workplace safety issue for the many as-yet-unvaccinated workers.

On top of that, the workers there have repeatedly been subject to sexual harassment, homophobic and racial harassment, and have repeatedly tried to report these things to management and have been met with pretty poor responses or ignoring the problem entirely.

The Salem store was planning to stop requiring customers to wear masks as of tomorrow, Monday, May 24 (I believe NH dropped its statewide mandate a month ago, but the store had maintained their own mask policy until now). It sounds like some of the workers were talking about staging a walkout out of concern for their safety.

Bull Moose released a pretty weak statement that said closing the store wasn't because of masks, but it sort of was inasmuch as it seems everyone was fired because they may have been organizing because of the mask issue (as well as the abuse issues/etc.). Oh also minimum wage in Maine (where all but 2 of the BM stores are) is $12.15 and in NH it's $7.25 and the Salem store workers absolutely get paid less than the Maine store workers do.

Anyway I'm done with them forever unless some major, major, major changes happen in upper management. It sucks because they've always been so great as far as customer service goes but this shit absolutely cannot stand.

I listened to some new songs and dang... he always sounded sad and woe is me, but now it  just comes across as pathetic instead of endearing.
Anyone in Toronto interested in a stack of this dipshit's vinyl? Nothing rare or special - just some LPs and some EPs that I haven't had an ounce of desire to spin in a while. I don't have the patience to list for sale or even ship. Maybe we could work out a trade or just buy me some fancy guitar strings.

I actually don’t listen to any of those bands anymore. Same goes with Brand New, Michael Jackson, and even idiots like Smash Mouth for playing a show during pandemic.

I just find other bands or artists that scratch the itch for me. When I hear songs like “Nobody Girl,” it really gets hard for me to relate to it like I did in the past. Instead, I’ve gotten into bands like centro-matic, or war on drugs, that resonate with me in the same way that his music did.

Same goes for, let’s say... “Pretty Young Thing,” by Michael Jackson.  I just can’t. But, instead of separating the music from the artist, I turn to the millions of artists out there NOT guilty of molesting children or soliciting nudes from underage people.

Hell, I even bail on bands and artists that behave abusively toward people. Sure, it may not be illegal, but I’m not gonna support and relate to an artist that objectifies his “friends,” dangles fame in exchange for sex (even if they do take the bait, it’s cringey), and belittles them when they don’t reciprocate? It’s just gross, and I can’t help but think about it when he’s crying in his lyrics about “look what I did to youuuu, look what you did to meeee.”

Absolutely to each their own, but I think it’s fascinating to see that fans don’t realize he’s also very abusive toward them. Like someone said earlier, it’s kinda crazy how similar his behavior resembles that giant orange that just lost an election. Maybe there’s something to that?

    Hello group
I am getting to the end of my 'working for someone else' life and I am looking at starting a retail record business.
My kids are grown up and it now feels the right time to do something that I think I will love, as music is my passion.
Here is the problem though - I have no idea where to start! I have a small shop in mind that I can get relatively cheep but I have no contacts, I wouldn't have a clue where to buy new stock from?
I am hoping that some kind members of this group, maybe even other independent shop owners can give me some advice/tips that will help me on my journey.
    Any advice welcome Ian
