dickcritter reacted to jameshays in My vinyl "investment"
It's been one year since I got the vinyl bug and it doesn't appear to be going away any time soon. Right away I could see my spending getting out of hand and we had just started the Dave Ramsey budget plan. This of course made things tricky but it made me very careful what I buy, and more importantly how I buy.
I discovered Discogs pretty quickly and found out it was very easy to set up and sell from. Each week I'd come home with a few garage sale scores to list for sale. As an Amazon Prime member, I not only learned how to search for bargain LP's, I made sure I ordered one at a time so I could keep the packing material (never once have I purchase a shipping box).
Another help was buying two copies of any limited/variant editions and selling one to basically pay for my copy or at least make it very cheap.
All in all it's gone pretty well and I've tracked all my purchases/sales in the "You Need A Budget" (YNAB) app on my iPhone. Since last June, my out of pocket expense is about $800 and I've got about 400 records. The other good news is I just finished logging them all in Discogs and according to recent sale info, my collection at the low end is at $3400 on the low end and $9500 on the high. Anything used I own is VG+ or better and of course the new stuff is all NM. While I'm a bit over budget on a monthly basis overall since last June, I've still managed to get a heck of a collection for a relatively low outlay.

How many Rosetta?
If that numbskull comes in here and says he was right I'll kick him in the nuts.
One of my main points was that even if it existed it wouldn't be widespread like a normal library, there would be one most likely in a high density area but still only available to a small percentage of the population.

I'm OK with you guys posting his contact info, in this case this guy doesn't deserve any protection.
Holy crap this dude's life is like a bad comedy on Fox. "How can I pay back all these people I ripped off?! I KNOW! I'll have a basement show when my parents go outta town!"

I like reading their Facebook responses:
Chris Concord The two songs released have no identity... other than obnoxious noise that is just thrown together. If i were in the band i would vote on not promoting or touring this album and start fresh... dont wanna market a bad product and commit band suicide.. dont "he is legend" yourself. Wonder how many Think Indie had shipped to Sound Stage Direct. They sold one yesterday for $149.99. Today 3 @ $169.99. Maybe more tomorrow?
It's great to know the record store you shop at is flipping vinyl on the side for 3x's the retail cost. :/ And they tell us to suport your local record store while they are doing this. Sometimes it is best to let the band / artist / company sell the product (1 per customer) directly through their official website first! Then whatever is left in stock, sell those copies to record stores.

dickcritter reacted to ChristianLJ in Vinyl app with image recognition - feedback and thoughts
Hi there everyone!
My name is Christian and i am one of the developers on a new app called OnVinyl and we would like to hear some of your opinions on our project.
Moderator: If this post violates any board rules please edit or delete it.
OnVinyl is an app which makes it possible for vinyl enthusiasts to catalogue their vinyl record collection using image recognition. You can snap the front of your record cover and add it to your collection with a single click.
At the moment the app contains the following features:
Search records using image recognition. Manage your vinyl record collection. Find stores worldwide. Follow your friends activity. Share your vinyl collecting activity with friends. All records have cover art. It's free and ad-free more to come.
The app is new on the market so it might fall short of functionality in some places and bugs might occur. Please let me know if you experience any problems.
So far the app is only available for Android but the iOS version is in its early stages of development. Furthermore if you have feedback of any kind please let us know by answering this thread or send me an email - [email protected]
You can download the app from Google Play here.
And if you want you can read more or follow us here.
Thank you!

While sharing opinions on this stuff can be valuable, people are often too quick to be persuaded or dissuaded. I think it sounds fine. Not quite the revelation I hoped for, given that there was access to the master tape at some point. But, it has 5 extra tracks on it, and The Sweet is as good as anything on the album proper.
