I find this is one of the only threads I have interest to contribute to. Picked this up from a pal who is a dealer needing to unload some stuff. Killer funk from a NO singer, Willie West. Both sides are great:

Cool. When I first got into soul jazz I would look for any record with Idris on drums and it was USUALLY funky as hell. Haven't heard of the other band. Will check them out.

Oh, yeah, forgot to mention this: Found a guy on FB selling his collection of records. It was about 300 records for $200. But the pics he showed, made it seem worth it. I left work around noon on Friday. I drove about 11 hours to Eureka Springs, Arkansas (which is just 20 minutes south of the Missouri state line). I showed up at this guy's house around 11 PM. Chatted for a minute, inspected a lot of the records, and packed them up. Drove another hour to Harrison, AR to find a motel to sleep in. Got up the next day around 8 AM and started the drive shortly after. Around 6 PM I was back in New Orleans. 30 hours and 1,300 miles later and I had this:

We will be through at some point.  I don't think it will be early.  LL has some local DJs coming through, so we might come through after the initial rush.  My guy is coming down Friday night, we'll decide then.  I wouldn't mind digging, cause there isn't anything on the US list for me

With that being said, to anyone across the pond - If you feel like picking up that Idris Muhammad release for me, you will be rewarded for your time.   Thanks!

i mean discogs started out as a database to catalog electronic music releases. obviously the site has grown beyond that, but for someone who is maybe unfamiliar with the site doing research on it, i don't think its a crazy conclusion (albeit outdated) based on their history

I made a Lego model of my local place - they're going to put it in the window for RSD!

This topic is giving me such a woody.

I collected fiercely in the 1990s, in retrospect the best time possible since everybody was dumping LPs. I'd spend $100 or $200 at Jerry's in Pittsburgh or the various stores in Chicago, DC, the East Village, Vancouver, London, San Francisco ... and I'd come away with more LPs than I could carry. Sometimes I had to find a UPS drop-off before I got back on a plane. (There were no UPS Stores back then.)

The first of two kids arrived in 1999 and they took most of my time, so I've barely bought any vinyl in the last 15 years. But for her 17th birthday last year the older one got an RP-1 she can take to college ("university" for those outside the US), along with 50 or 60 duplicates from my stash. Seriously, nobody should leave home without Blood on the Tracks and Astral Weeks (green label, natch) at the very least. I've bought a few things here and there when I find nice stuff for less than $25 or even less than $20 per disk. (Seriously? $25 for a single LP? WTH?!)

I'm lucky enough to work from home, and we have a semi-finished attic, so the first shot is the view from my desk, and once or twice a day I climb into the chair to listen to one side as a break.

Rock and pop is on the left; jazz, blues, and a small batch of classical live on the right. We old guys have a lot of the gems, like the original Art Pepper on the rack to the left above the 'table. Warms my heart that so many youngsters are keeping vinyl alive.

By the way, the plural of vinyl is "vinyl." You no more pick up "vinyl" (with an s) than you pick up "fishes" at the market for dinner. Stop me gnashing my teeth. Please.

Be good, kids. Enjoy what you've got. These are good times for music, if for little else.

If anybody cares: VPI Aries I with Lyra Helikon cartridge, Rowland Capri preamp, Rowland 102 amp (for summer), Mac Mini file server with Schiit Modi Multibit DAC and two hard drives (one a mirror of the other, backed up every day at 4AM), Quicksilver Audio Silver Sixty mono amps with stock EL-34s (for the cool months), Scansonic 2.5 speakers, Sunfire sub, DIY DH Labs cabling throughout. CDs in the background are all ripped to the server now, along with about 2000 live shows by various groups, especially the Grateful Dead. Anybody want the little silver disks?

I finished the cabinet I was working on. Cost under $200 and should hold about 700 albums or so. I'm just really proud of the top. Too bad you can't see too much of it. Next step is getting a separate amp for the record set up. Feels good to design and build it myself instead of going to IKEA or paying an arm and a leg for a piece of furniture. It's a nice median between the two.

This is a nicely mellow record by Pete La Roca with a little bit of a Euro jazz/spiritual jazz vibe. Originals aren't that expensive. It's got John Gilmore, Chick Corea, Walter Booker, and Pete La Roca.

If anyone ordered from Resident in the UK, they've told me their "eagle-eyed packer" spotted the colour debacle earlier in the week when dispatching them so there shouldn't be any mixed up records received.

soundofsilver reacted to tape in Can anyone explain the concept behind double LP releases?
No one's really brought up average song/album length yet. The CD era brought along single albums that were over 60 minutes in length (since the maximum length of a CD is either 74 or 80 minutes). Before CDs, albums were created specifically to the time limitations of vinyl where once you start getting past about 22 minutes/side you start having to make tradeoffs w/r/t fidelity and volume. Therefore, a single 75-minute CD best fits on two LPs. A 60-65 minute album probably best fits on three LP sides.

Then there's song length as well. Songs in excess of four minutes are far more common than they used to be. Three six-minute songs and you're at 18 minutes.
