  1. So what you're saying, basically, is that on Soundhoo, I can upload Brand New's Deja Entendu with fart sounds added, and I won't get sued for copyright infringement and I can make friends on your social plataform? If so, count me in!
  2. My work internet filters are flagging this site as inappropriate due to potential of EDM.
  3. I know that stands and speaker placement makes a huge difference, but I have really limited space. My speakers sit on top of a 4 x 4 Ikea Expedit, upside down so that the tweeters are lower, with a bit of blue sticky tack to limit vibration/resonance. I know for a fact it's not ideal - a friend who has the same speakers with a crappier set up has the speakers on stands at appropriate distances and they sound way better. So I'm not the guy to talk about stands, but I do know they will make a difference.
  4. I have the Diamond 10.1s and a Debut Carbon Esprit. I'm very happy with the sound. As far as bang for your buck, and you can read reviews about them, they are very good for the money. The newer version of them is the Diamond 220 - you might find good deals on old stock of 10.1s, but possibly even some deals on new 220s. As well, they are a well-known brand, so if you do plan to upgrade in a few years, I feel like with good care you can resell for a decent amount. Check out US Audio Mart too - you can probably get some sweet sales on demo speakers, or used ones from audiophiles who have upgraded. I bet some sweet vintage speakers would sound great with the Marantz amp.
  5. This was definitely helpful. The messenger bag at United by Blue is really sweet looking - and pretty reasonably priced. I realized that maybe black leather is just not my thing, and that's all I was seeing at a lot of department stores. There's a Timbuk2 store in Toronto that I think I'll check out. They look really practical and durable. My wife suggested that I should make sure it looks professional - I'm a teacher but I'm working as a special education consultant, so I go school to school and I know that first impressions are important.
  6. I have #2 coming Feb 15....definitely baby time around here...
  7. Thanks for all of the recommendations everyone! A lot of nice looking bags...now to pick...
  8. Must be the magic of such a good band that most of my favourite Okkervil River songs are pretty different (though they definitely include some of what you picked) Some of my faves not included in your list: Dead Dog Song The Latest Toughs Mermaid The President's Dead Plus Ones (I love the lyrics to this) Okkervil River Song For Real It Was My Season Another Radio Song
  9. I mostly bring a messenger bag with my laptop and a bit of paperwork around for work, but mine is just totally done, so I'm looking for something new. Anyone have one they really like? Some preferences: -under $100 -possibly orderable/available in canada -doesn't need to be leather -don't care about colour -fits a 13 inch laptop -shoulder strap rather than just a handle
  10. Stupid atrocious shipping rates to Canada keeping me away for now. Hopefully it will make its way into stores around here... I was actually sort of hoping some of the stuff on the extra LP was from the Golden Opportunities mixtape, which I absolutely love.
  11. This is a weird and intriguing one - I do love this album (my favourite OR album), but they've already released it in a single disc plus double disc (the Appendix), so it's kind of weird to re-release it again, as I imagine many dedicated fans don't want to buy it a third time. I'd need to see what the blues/folk covers look like.
  12. I kind of like the Strawbs. In small doses they're fun - a bit overly serious, but no more so than the Decemberists, whose early work owes a lot to the Strawbs. Plus I do love Sandy Denny and her album with the Strawbs is pretty good. And yes for me, Strawbs > Oasis.
  13. I'll trade you a Strawbs LP for one of your test pressings. The Strawbs were pretty much the Oasis of late 70s overwrought prog rock. P.S. Then I'm gonna flip the Oasis test pressing for $$$$
  14. Two pieces of advice: 1. Read through page one of the beginner's guide as it will answer everything you're asking. 2. Once you have read it, you should realize that you should not buy the LP60.
  15. You would need the receiver to actually listen to the music. If you only had a turntable and preamp you wouldn't have any means to listen - the receiver hooks up to the speakers or headphones. If you want to go extremely cheap, you could start with both, pick up a cheap/used preamp, some cheap speakers or headphones (provided the receiver has a headphone jack) and you'd be good to go. Unfortunately turntable setups are going to be a bunch more complicated than an iPod. Like Allen said though, better to spend money on older stuff like this than thinking you're 'saving' by getting a cheap Crosley/Pyle/Fisher Price that plugs USB into your computer.
  16. I have a NAD C326BEE amp. Bought it used about 9 months ago for $300 CAD. Lots of inputs (no phono preamp) and a very warm sound. Powers my Wharfedale Diamond 10.1s perfectly and sounds great with records and digital audio (with and without a DAC). It may not outperform some heavier duty amps, but I found it to be very capable and read a lot of favourable reviews before buying (I also replaced a kenwood receiver). In part because it's a relatively popular modern amp, I've seen a few used go by over the last few months.
  17. This one time I had to fight fifty ninjas, twelve foot soldiers, and the Shredder just to get a test press. You have no idea how many extra lives I needed to use.
  18. Congrats! It's a fun adventure. Different world, but such a wonderful experience!
  19. This is a pretty good deal for any fan of NC. That being said, I have 4 of these, and so not sure if I'm ready to drop this money on second copies....hopefully more information about individual releases soon enough. But seriously, hard to find an artist with a better discography - each album is different and strong enough on its own, and Tigers is one of my all-time favourite live albums. While we're here - top 3 Neko albums? Mine would go: 1. Fox Confessor 2. Furnace Room Lullaby 3. Tigers Have Spoken (I just love the choices of covers)
  20. I doubt they still have it from years ago, but The Attack In Black - Curve of The Earth LP (I have a copy on the German label, but would love to have one on Dine Alone).
  21. I have no idea what kind of music you're into, but one of my all-time favourite local bands, Bruce Peninsula (folk/indie/prog meets gospel with 5 or 6 vocalists, including Tamara Lindemann of the Weather Station, Katie Stelmanis of Austra, and a few other notable musicians) is performing at the Toronto Film Fest in connection to a film they contributed to, on September 11. More information here: https://www.facebook.com/events/675107552588809/ PS - if you mean the CN Tower, it's totally fun (obviously touristy, but still a fun experience), but if you want a better (but not overhead) view, go to Toronto Island to walk around and take a look at the city from there. One of my favourite spots in the city.
  22. One of the things I noticed about South of the Border was that the translator of the book was different than most of the rest of his books, and I felt like the text was a bit less poetic, and a bit more straightforward. I know that it's hard to figure out the exact intentions of the words when reading a translation, but I do think it makes a difference. Norwegian Wood is great, but a bit less weird/cerebral than much of his other work.
