Insound Closing Its Doors After 16 Years
Sidney Crosley replied to jhulud's topic in Vinyl Collective Message Board
Yes, I remember this from a previous purchase. But I wrote to Insound arguing that their checkout said 'International Air' when they in fact sent it surface, and they refunded me more than half the cost of the tariffs (aka what the taxes would have actually been on UPS air). Not sure if I'll take the plunge, though it's very tempting! -
Insound Closing Its Doors After 16 Years

Seems to have $8.50 shipping for a turntable internationally....seems a little suspicious. I'm a tad worried that it wouldn't go through. But if it does, even with the exchange rate, a pretty amazing price for a lot of these turntables... -
I've heard good things about the Bellari. Don't have one so can't really say. For headphone amps, your best bet as far as affordability would be to go Schiit. The Magni 2 Uber would be about as good of an entry level headphone amp as you'll get, and for $150, it has great resale value and sound quality. It's not tube though - if you want to go tube, the Schiit Vali ($120) has subminiature tubes or the Valhalla 2 ($350) I imagine would be good next steps. There are also a bunch of ~$100 tube headphone amps around. I picked up a Bravo Audio v1 Headphone Amp (they're sold on Amazon) for super cheap - there are 3 currently that run under $100. At first I was kind of lukewarm about it, but I think it hadn't been burnt in yet. Now I really do like it (though I have been thinking about upgrading). Their highest end one is called Bravo Ocean - looks pretty cool. I've also heard good things about the Little Dot 1+ which is on Amazon for $160 right now. Here's a great spot to do some research: http://www.head-fi.org/products/category/desktop-amps

Does anyone have a Pebble/Pebble Time? Thoughts? I'm considering getting one, but would love to know whether it's worth it beyond just a fun novelty. Not really into anything as complex as the Apple Watch, but maybe want something that looks and feels like a watch, but can potentially do a bit more.

Sennheiser momentum headphones
Sidney Crosley replied to aviolentworld's topic in Turntables & Other Audio Equipment
The other thing to note about the Momentum on-ear is that they have a relatively small oval shape (about the size of an ear) with a pretty tight clamping force. I used to have Sony on-ears much like I imagine yours are, and I found the Momentums way less comfortable. But that being said, they are pretty small overall for portability. I've used other on ears that are more comfortable, but are more like studio monitors. I have a feeling that because the Momentum series is a popular everyday brand (rather than pure hifi/audiophile) you will find them for sale almost everywhere. You should see if you can go into a store and try them on. My advice is to try to test for 15 minutes and see how they feel afterwards. My guess is that if you're used to the 598s, which are quite comfortable, you won't like the Momentum on ears very much. -
Sennheiser momentum headphones
Sidney Crosley replied to aviolentworld's topic in Turntables & Other Audio Equipment
I had these for a month before I sold them. As far as sound quality on a portable headphone, they were excellent. They also had a cool look and came with a nice case. However, I hated the fit. Might have just been me but I just found that I couldn't listen for more than an hour because of the way they pinched my ears. But then again, I'm pretty tall and have somewhat big ears. My suggestion would be to go try them on for a little while and see. At that price, I think they're a pretty good deal for portable headphones. I even considered going to the Momentum over-ear for a while because I liked everything but the fit. -

Are There Any Good Band Names Left?
Sidney Crosley replied to passionbrand's topic in Everything Else Message Board
Every time I record some music just for fun, I always look for a good bad band name. And I think I've come up with the worst band name ever, in part because it's not so bad that it's good, it's just plain terrible, uncatchy, too long, and pretty terrible. I have not even made music for said band, but when I do, it will reflect the terribleness of the name, which is: You Miss 100% Of The Shots You Don't Take, Billy Corgan (I've even registered on Bandcamp with that name, you know, just in case). I'm thinking the album will be called Get Behind Me, Stan. -

Controversial: I don't like cats. But I do like Shaq and tacos. 2/3?

PO soon: Rancid - All The Moonstompers

Is anyone else bothered by the grammatical error in the title of this album on the cover itself? -

I would totally agree. I had Old Ramon on CD way back when, and I just found it was such a relistenable album - I have mixed feelings about much MK stuff post 2005, but Old Ramon has always been a favourite. -
I'm not sure if any of you have seen this, but NPR had a side-by-side test of several songs to see if you can discern which of the samples is an uncompressed wav, a 320 kbps mp3 and a 128 kbps mp3. http://www.npr.org/sections/therecord/2015/06/02/411473508/how-well-can-you-hear-audio-quality As someone who is neither a full on audiophile, but not a complete amateur either, I set up my DacMagic to my Macbook via USB, and listened through my NAD amp on Grado SR125s and Superlux HD668. I got 2 out of 6 correct, while picking 320 kbps twice and 128kbps twice. And honestly, I was never overly confident in my choices. Has anyone else tried this? Thoughts on the process? I'm guessing that the nature of streaming audio like this is flawed in the actual test.

Singer/songwriter records, acoustic
Sidney Crosley replied to donlombardo's topic in Vinyl Collective Message Board
I don't love Clouds. Blue is unbeatable, but go for Court and Spark as your second choice. My wife absolutely loves Hissing of Summer Lawns, which is a much more difficult album, but amazing in its own way. Mid 70s Joni begins to get weird, and a but more divisive than her earlier stuff.- 50 replies

What's your latest purchase?
Sidney Crosley replied to ajxd's topic in Turntables & Other Audio Equipment
But in the opposite way, like 'this shirt is real Ralph Lauren and it cost $300' when really you stole it from some guy at the gym, and it's made of asbestos?
