  1. Agreed. His books are super addictive. I haven't read any of his in a few years, but definitely loved Kafka. I've loved pretty much everything I've read by him (I'd guess 6-7 books), with South Of The Border West Of The Sun and Dance Dance Dance being the ones I liked the least (not that they were bad - they just weren't as good as his other stuff). Wind-Up Bird and Norwegian Wood are probably my favourites. But I also loved his book What I Talk About When I Talk About Running, which is about running marathons, and gives a bit of insight into Murakami himself, without being an autobiography.
  2. Given that 2-3 times per week, we get a new poster asking for specific information about the value of a record, I wonder if it would make sense to have a pinned thread in the vinyl forum that begins with tips (mostly: look at Discogs) and then allows for anyone to ask about the value of their record, and then for the rest of us to either decide it's worth discussing, or just refer to the first post with recommendations on how to look on the internet. Worth our time? I'd be willing to write the first post if it feels like a worthwhile endeavour.
  3. Just did a bit of end-of-summer purchasing on Canuck Audio Mart: Shure SE215 IEMs + Shure SRH840 over-ear cans for $160 CAD together ($120 US). Really loving the SE215s. The 840s are sweet sounding, but not sure where I'm going to use them right now. Hagerman Bugle 2 phono preamp - $150 CAD ($115 US). Just hooked it up replacing a NAD preamp, and I'm already quite impressed - immediate clarity and punchier bass. I'm super excited because I think this gets my turntable setup to a point where I am very happy right now, and will probably not upgrade for a while (Debut Carbon Esprit with Grado Gold1 cart+ Hagerman Bugle 2 phono pre + NAD C326BEE amp + Wharfedale 10.1).
  4. Anyone up for a VC NHL fantasy league? Not sure if this has been done before but I'd be happy to help arrange.
  5. Just noticed this. You still looking for it? I have one NM with the poster and glasses. PM if you're interested.
  6. Correct. You can go through almost any other input, but you'll do a lot of damage if you plug your phono preamp into your phono input in your amp.
  7. I bought a stylus gauge on ebay from China for cheap - took about six weeks to show up, but it does the job. Some folks might recommend a better one for higher accuracy, but I can't speak to that... Do you have the anti-skate working? What kind of surface is the turntable on? Is there anything else on the same surface? I have a Debut Carbon and found it did skip a bit when I didn't have the weight right - I'm guessing you've played around with it before with no avail? Perhaps someone else has more suggestions?
  8. Before anyone can suggest anything, we'll need some details: 1. What kind of turntable? 2. Do you have a stylus gauge to indicate the appropriate weight relative to the cart? 3. Do you live in an airplane or blimp?
  9. I'm updating an older thread. The first thing I'm selling is a 2M Red stylus. Backstory below. Price lowered from $50 shipped to $40 shipped. I'm selling a very lightly used Ortofon 2M Red stylus only, though it is housed in a non-functioning cartridge. The context: I bought a Debut Carbon Esprit SB from Insound's closing sale. It comes with the 2M Red. But I already had a relatively new Grado Gold1 cartridge. So I played the Esprit with the Red for about 2 weeks max before deciding I would be able to swap out the cartridges (I had done so before on a vintage table), but I pulled too hard and out came one of the prongs at the back of the cartridge. I quickly rushed to my nearest audio store for them to swap the cartridges. I was then told I destroyed the cartridge's wiring, but the stylus was in great shape and could be placed into any 2M shell. So I will ship the 2M Red stylus still attached to the non-functioning cartridge, packed nicely to anywhere in the world for $40US including shipping and Paypal fees. I think that's a pretty good deal considering replacement cartridges sell for $87US at the moment. And I will offer a guarantee that if it doesn't work, you can send it back to me for a refund. Will also trade towards an entry level desktop headphone amp a la Schiit Magni. Also available: NAD PP3i phono preamp. Very good working condition - used regularly for three years and worked perfectly the entire time. Has a USB out to connect to a computer, though I never used this and have heard it's not the best, but still workable. $85US shipped anywhere in the world. Shure SRH840 - got these in a deal with another set of headphones, though not exactly sure I want to keep them - don't know if I have a place for them. Pretty immaculate condition. Not totally sure I'll sell, but will consider offers (trades included). Ringmat - got this as a thrown in with a new phono preamp, and I don't think I'll need it since I have an acrylic platter, but it's a turntable mat that apparently is pretty good. Looks to be in good shape. Seems to sell for 40 pounds or more in the UK (or at least it did - I can't tell if these are still being sold). Here's what it looks like. $25 shipped? Way less if you buy from me on Discogs (http://www.discogs.com/seller/raindogtrombone/profile)
  10. Not necessarily. I used to work at the Hockey Hall of Fame and got to meet a number of hockey players from the last 60 years. While some are huge assholes, there were more than enough players (new and old) who were friendly, warm-hearted, and great guys. There were definitely some who were less friendly, but I will never forget the conversation I had with hall of famer Bobby Baun about his bowel movements now compared to the 70s...
  11. For reals. Although I do love their other albums just as much, but Marriage is such a perfect punky pop album, and any fan of PUP should love it.
  12. I love Lowest of the Low. That album is so great but I have always hated the production on it - so clean-cut and lacking any kind of dimension. The songs are so good but I find I can't listen to the album for very long because I find the production so bland.
  13. There are a whole fuckload of great Canadian artists. Right now I'm vacationing in Nova Scotia, so my list is east-coast based: Sloan Inbreds Thrush Hermit Joel Plaskett Emergency Alvvays Flashing Lights Super Friendz Eric's Trip Two Hours Traffic Jale Hey Rosetta I'm not sure all of these bands are actual east-coasters, but in my head they are. I will return to this thread with more great music soon...
  14. Semi-related: my copy of this from Dine Alone bundle #1 was black. Were all the bundle copies black?
  15. Usually the major releases will be well stocked. Here are some of my favourite stores in the city - you can probably call them to see about reserving a copy of need be: June Records Sonic Boom Rotate This Kops Records
  16. Okay, so Br/dges sounds like a one-person project that was influenced heavily by the Bon Iver guy-in-a-cabin kind of sound, bits of falsetto, sparseness, lots of buildup, but definitely a lot of remnants of Moneen's melodic punk. In fact, for me, I prefer the quieter bits of the songs rather than when the heavier guitars come in. Definitely sounds home-recorded, but not necessarily lo-fi or anything. My guess is Moneen fans will be happy with the tracks.
  17. It's called Love and Hate. Appears to be signed. Haven't listened to it yet. Will do so shortly and let you know what it sounds like. Keep in mind I'm only somewhat familiar with Moneen.
  18. No, it's not a slipmat. It's an ultra-rare Alexisonfire picture disc of them playing French Celine Dion covers. And I just had to put my fingers all over it and lay it on my couch. Then I let my 2-year-old hold it.
  19. Picked up my bundle from their office (which is actually a beautiful old house in Cabbagetown, Toronto). 7 inch is a band called Bridges (or maybe Br/dges). CD is Monster Truck. Lots of swag in here! Let me know if you are curious about any of this stuff. I didn't really have time to open each of these. Also considering selling my Helicon Blue. PM to discuss.
