  1. I don't know, they have one of the weakest defence corps, especially trading away Daley. Unless Lehtonen and Niemi get to play net at the same time, I think they'll have some trouble.
  2. Perhaps - and just perhaps - a rare instance where a Crosley is appropriate?
  3. Yes, I'm definitely glad that the cart was installed properly (even though the reason I had to was because I broke the 2M Red's 4 prongs in the back while trying to disconnect it - bummer, since I was planning to sell it to offset some of the TT cost). I installed it on my last TT and it took a lot of finicking to get it to sound right, especially as it got closer to the middle. Right now it sounds like it was done right. I'll have to take a look at the 8MZ. I have a bunch of life left in this cart, but it's always fun to look at what's next.
  4. So I bought a Grado Gold about 5 months ago for my JVC direct drive turntable, and it was a huge jump from the previous cart. Last month at Insound's sale, I picked up a Debut Carbon Esprit. Right off the go with the 2M Red, I found it was a huge improvement for my system - way more umph, and a lot brighter. I decided to switch the 2M Red to the Gold (though I've changed over cartridges before, I did not do a good job at this and had to take the table to a shop to switch the cartridges for me...). The Gold on the Carbon is an interesting pairing. Definitely less bright and immediate than the 2M Red. The bass is a whole lot clearer, and the music sounds more crisp when played loud, but a bit more muddled when quiet (the brightness of the 2M Red made it sound a bit clearer when quieter, but it might have been a bit deceptive). The Gold sounds especially nice on folkier records like Josh Ritter and Joni Mitchell. Not bad at all on some punkier stuff, but I've mostly been listening to softer music since I made the switch. Overall I think it's an interesting pairing - based on a lot of feedback online, at this price point, I'd imagine the 2M Blue is probably a better pairing for the Carbon (given that it comes with a 2M Red factory). This isn't a question or anything - just thought I'd share as I know that the Debut Carbon is a popular turntable.
  5. This board also functions like a more traditional message board compared to things like Reddit or Facebook. I remember being on various message boards circa 1999-2000, and honestly, they were not all that different in basic appearance and function compared to this. Other forums/boards seem to be closer to free-for-alls as far as ideas and comments. In many ways, I'm sure there are many people who have never used any sort of message board of this sort before.
  6. I don't think any of my top ten records are from artists with female members or female singers, but quite a few of my favourite bands/artists have female singers or band members - Neko Case, New Pornographers, Aimee Mann/Til Tuesday, Gillian Welch, Arcade Fire, Robyn, Fleetwood Mac, Talking Heads, Whiskeytown, Kathleen Edwards, Sarah Harmer/Weeping Tile, etc. (as you can see, my musical interests are quite varied). My wife's favourite artist is Joni Mitchell, but she rarely finds female singers as interesting as I do - perhaps in part because Joni Mitchell's music is so unique (maybe less so in her earlier stuff, but few have ever pulled off anything quite as interesting and intricate as mid-70s Mitchell).
  7. My advice is go Grado. I have some SR125 cans and I just absolutely love them. Have listened to a whole bunch of others but I just find their sound is so warm and detailed. But just be warned - they bleed a ton of sound, and you can hear a lot of external noise. Not worth it if you plan on sitting right beside the fridge or you live atop a dance studio.
  8. Boston made some seriously weird moves. I mean I know they had to move some players around, but I don't know that they got close to the value of either player they traded, and then they made some odd picks... I don't know a ton about the draft class, but none of those three players were ranked nearly as high as they were picked....I guess we will see in a couple of years...
  9. Yeah, it seemed a little steep, considering they're also taking on Legwand (I'm sure on a young team like the Sabres, he could be a good leader, but he also might just be a bit of dead weight). It'll be interesting to see what Lehner can do as a starter, or if the Sabres will pick up another goalie.
  10. Based on 90 seconds of Googling, seems to be pretty reasonable - by no means a high end table, but if it's in good working condition, it's already much better than a Crosley. How is the cartridge/stylus? If that's in good shape you're definitely able to get yourself going without damaging your records.
  11. I'm surprised nobody has posted this yet: Jason Isbell has a new one out in a few weeks (July 17). I've been obsessed with a lot of his music over the last year, and I'm really excited to hear this one. Tremendous songwriter and singer. http://jasonisbell.portmerch.com/stores/product.php?productid=19569&cat=359&page=1
  12. Holy shit - I didn't know Jason Isbell has a new one coming out!!! I'm so excited. I've become more and more obsessed with his entire catalog for the past year or so (Southeastern and Live From Alabama are on constant rotation).
  13. I don't know the speakers, but for $150, you can get a Schiit Magni 2 Uber, which is a great headphone amp, and allows you to bypass it to go to speakers as necessary (it would be plugged in direct from the source, and then bypassed to go to speakers, or just used as headphone amp). Even if the A5s have a headphone amp, I'm guessing its quality won't be exceptionally high.
  14. Picked up a Debut Carbon DC Esprit before they were gone. $8.49 shipping to Canada so I was worried that they would do the usual UPS fuckery where I have to pay most of the cost of shipment, but no, I only had to pay duty (though taxes on the cost at full price rather than discount) and $10 brokerage fees. Considering the Debut Carbon (not even DC) costs over $600 CAD new here with taxes, I think paying equivalent of about $550 CAD for the Esprit was a pretty sweet deal. I just set it up and it sounds great. I have a Grado Gold1 cartridge I am going to put on it shortly - excited to see how it sounds!
  15. If you absolutely want to pay under $100, you're more likely better off with vintage. Crosley is a waste of time and money. Go on Craigslist, look for old turntables, Google reviews of them, and pick one that looks like it's in good shape.
  16. To answer the legit question a few posts back about cold temperatures, there was definitely a link to a thread in the Discogs forum about testing out vinyl in inhumanly cold temperatures (in a science lab) and the extreme cold didn't seem to affect the record's playability or warping. Someone else find that thread...
  17. Viet Cong - S/T The Weather Station - Loyalty Jamie xx - In Colour Kendrick Lamar - To Pimp a Butterfly Hayden - Hey Love Father John Misty - I Love You Honeybear Need more time with: Sleater Kinney, Active Child, Tallest Man on Earth, Joel Plaskett Disappointments: Modest Mouse, Sufjan Stevens*, Sun Kil Moon * I actually think this album is beautiful, but so sad and singularly toned that I cannot listen to it at all
  18. It's a total myth. Records sound good on anything! Don't let anyone on this board tell you otherwise - no matter if you're running your Crosley USB through your computer speakers, or you get a record player that costs more than $200 (!!!!), it all sounds exactly the same! You can pretty much plug any speaker into any turntable and it sounds good! That's the beauty of vinyl. It sounds great no matter what you do to it!
  19. I'm glad you said that about the Flame Alphabet, because I felt the exact same way. Read 3 chapters, and then just had to stop. And I read a lot, and really do try to get through books if I can. Here are a few of my recent favourites (I'm not overly a genre person, so nothing horror/Lovecrafty on my list): A Visit from the Goon Squad - Jennifer Egan (great read - related short stories that all come together perfectly) Wolf in White Van - John Darnielle (of the Mountain Goats) Remainder - Tom McCarthy (delightfully bizarre and brilliant) Inverted World - Christopher Priest (cool sci-fi, very much like that recent film Snowpiercer) Domestic Violets - Matthew Norman (fun 'guy' fiction a la Nick Hornby - my favourite subgenere of male narcissist fiction) Ian McEwan - Amsterdam (brilliant book, though I haven't liked any of his other ones) Unchangeable Spots of Leopards - Kristofer Jansma (really well done 'first book') Currently reading Adam Levin's the Instructions, which is a 1000 page clusterfuck about a brilliant and violet ten-year-old who has been kicked out of every Jewish day school in the Chicago area, and is trying to cope with the special behaviour class in his public school. it's pretty amazing and ridiculous.
  20. I would suggest to shop around for a better price on the 10.1s. Now that they're being discontinued, I've seen a couple of shops (in Toronto) reduce prices considerably ($279 CAD from $449 list). But then again, having not heard the 220s, I can't tell you whether the price of the new ones is worth it or not.
  21. Congrats! You're also going about this all wrong. Getting married means more money for records - just throw multiple engagement parties and invite distant relatives who won't be able to travel and who will feel bad and send large cheques you can spend on records. And then just register at your local record store!
  22. Check out the Beginner's Guide in the Turntable forum. There is a lot of information about all of these things, listed at different price ranges.
  23. Now matter how much I like this album, I still think this is one of the worst album covers I've ever seen. The variants look very cool - great collection!
