  1. Everything PG.Lost has put out is fucking amazing. I can't get enough of that band. On Planet Post-Rock, they are their own continent. I'm having serious trouble finding anything of theirs on vinyl, though. On other band notes, I've been doing a lot of listening in preparation for this coming Tuesday, when I will see GODSPEED YOU! BLACK EMPEROR in Hudson, NY!!!!! I can't fucking wait. I hope they play shit from Providence, Lift Yr. Skinny Fists, the bookend tracks from the new album, and all of "Storm".
  2. Haha what? I've never used computer speakers for my record set up. They're from an old stereo of mine.
  3. I'd rather just have the conversational aspect of it, really. I'm here to talk about this shit, so I ask questions. I want to be told. Is that weird?
  4. The video they posted on the listening parties was truly touching... what a beautiful thing. Band and fans. Coming together for a truly intimate, personal thing with music. Connecting around the world. All the feels.
  5. I think that actually matches the album cover really fucking well. Wish the splatter came out a little further though. Can't wait for this music!!!!!
  6. Been listening to a lot of Sunbather lately. This record is so stupefyingly unreal. The material translates so well to the live setting, I hope they keep most of it in their set. Although I was a little bummed they didn't have the piano part on sample for "The Pecan Tree" in the live versions I checked out. But holy shit, "Sunbather" live is so punishing and amazing. There's a version where they add this chugging riff in the outro... Kerry takes a different picking technique attack and you can hear where they were going with this new material.
  7. Waking Aida is such an interesting group. Going to check the new song out right now. As far as instrumental shit goes, I have been knee-deep in Pg.Lost for the last.... weeks. I can't stop listening. Key is tremendous and such a step ahead in writing, but all of their albums are fucking sick. I also just finally checked out the split with Wang Wen and was pleasantly surprised at how kick-ass that was. This new Waking Aida song is pretty fucking sick.... damn.
  8. I like his lyrics. They're weird. And paint stories that feel strange. Dream House will forever be the best lyrics though. And best song.
  9. I might take you up on that, dude. I love the original artwork. So pissed I decided to pass on that at the Rhode Island gig. Stupid stupid stupid. So, what can we kind of expect with the new plate pressing? What kind of sonic qualities does this process produce? Can we expect it to actually sound radically different than the original?
  10. Snagged a yellow! That looks great with the new album artwork. Admittedly, I think I like the old cover way better, just like the original cover of The Four Trees is way better than the weird vinyl one, but whatever. Curious to hear how this sounds compared to the original tracks. Was pretty underwhelmed by the green and red translucents, honestly. Was hoping for a sick splatter, but clear yellow works really well. Can't wait! Also picked up Junius' Martyrdom CD too. Yes!
  11. Listening to the song again. Really the only true blemish is the fade out that happens before the piano coda. Why? Why do that? It makes no sense. The rest of the song is pretty fucking sick. Guitar solo still needs some delay, that shit is too dry. But this song is really good.
  12. So, the album isn't really blue. At least the 2 versions they had out at the vinyl listening station. You know how the ocean is like, SUPER SUPER dark blue it almost looks black? That's what the record looks like. Its a suuuuuper dark blue swirl that looks almost black, depending on the light. Its nowhere near as blue as the album cover blue is. That said, it did sound fucking fantastic. But $70? Go fuck yourself, Phish. People are already selling it for $250 on Discogs. Some dude has like 7 up for sale. LOL. What a retard. Nobody is ever fucking buying those.
  13. lol I know I have extreme views. It's all in good fun, the music is still sick. I love the middle clean break in Back To The Water. Incidentally enough, I literally just got a text message from my best friend Matt who fucking HAAAAATES Sunbather. His take on that album: "It's just a bunch of noise, there is nothing happening." Yeah, whatever guy. So he sends me this tonight: "I hate to say it but the new Deafheaven song is pretty good, has some great transitions." I don't get him sometimes, lol.
  14. Got any cool examples of this? It sounds way interesting. I'd love to see a video of this being made, too.
  15. While I agree with the sentiment that making Sunbather clones would cheapen the impact, I feel like this is a style that they could explore a ton and not just clone it. I know the album will destroy, but Sunbather... that sound... they could make a career out of that and I would be SO happy haha. I listened to the full thing yesterday on the way home from Phish's Magnaball festival in Watkins Glen, and crusing through the mountains of I-88 and listening to The Pecan Tree on full blast... Yeah, I want more of that. And don't get me wrong, I'm not knocking the new stuff, I'm sure it will be super awesome. But the impact of Sunbather is something I think that will haunt them forever. Although I hope they turn out like Pink Floyd, where Wish You Were Here and Animals are JUST as good (Animals is the best, though) as Dark Side, even though Dark Side is the more famous high-water mark. Because honestly, I was hoping we'd get more stuff like From The Kettle To The Coil. That shit is so good. I was really hoping that was the direction they were going to go from Sunbather, where you can trace the roots of that album's impact but it's still a different kind of thing.
  16. I'm extremely bummed they aren't incorporating more shoegaze/post-rock stuff into the sound. I cannot get enough of that. blah blah artistic progression blah blah... Sunbather will be the album that they will be doing tours of in 10 years, not New Bermuda. This will be a great album, but it will not be a game changer like Sunbather. Sunbather is just one of those albums, like Dark Side of the Moon, that comes along once or twice a generation and just completely rips a new paradigm into existence and changes EVERYTHING.
  17. sweet thanks man, i need to get registered on that site
  18. I might be in for that group buy too... clear always is my favorite sounding record. Although my white 180g Sleepmakeswaves "...and so we destroyed everything" is one of my all-time favorite sounding records. That thing is fucking perfect.
  19. This hits on a lot of the things that bug me about this track. That guitar solo tone is fucking terrible. At least throw a little delay on there to soften it up. That little flourish would go a LONG way. 2nd, that fadeout -> Piano solo is SUPER fucking lazy songwriting. The track fades out... implying an ending, oh and then we're going to play a piano part at the end. Just combine them together! Fading out on the piano would have been so sick. This. So much this. Although Kettle is a direct descendent of Sunbather's style, I could get 20 more albums in that style and still never be satisfied. Thinking about cancelling my pre-order and just buying the CD somewhere. The mix and production on this album is just awful. You forgot Slayer. The "Raining Blood" triplet section in the beginning of the song is, well... straight out of Slayer.
  20. I get what you're saying but that's not the issue. I just don't like the sound of the instruments. The guitars are missing that dripping, soggy, swollen atmospheric aspect that I love(d) so much about Deafheaven's sound. This production is just far too clean and dry for me. It sounds like it was recorded in a lab. Everything is too perfect. The instruments don't sit together in the mix the way they do on Roads and Sunbather. Rather than a group hug, they're all standing apart from each other. This is just not at all the "sound" I want from Deafheaven. They've gone commercial, making everything slick and fancy and clean in the production department. The riffing style on this track is way different too, lots of thrash style picking patterns. They even do the Raining Blood groove at the beginning with those triplets. This sounds like Deafheaven with the lights on. There's no atmosphere or vibe here.
  21. Talking about the track, frontman George Clarke said, "We wanted to share 'Brought to the Water' first because it gives a good idea of the overall sonic tone of the record and really evokes feelings that come with uprooting and throwing oneself into the complacent, monotonous routine of adulthood." Yeah, because playing in Deafheaven must be so hard to deal with. Not in love with the production on this album. It sounds like every other sterile modern metal album. Sunbather's production was PERFECT, the perfect mixture of clarity and atmosphere and analog liveliness. It was living and breathing... organic. This record is tight and closed and flat. I like that they experiment with regular guitar leads here, but.... where's the delay? Put some fucking delay on that. Its so dry. Clean break section is pretty sick, but I can't fucking stand the sound of those drums. Yeah, I hate this production. This is everything I dislike about modern extreme metal production. It's like everything is stacked together. It doesn't sound like a group; it sounds like a bunch of tracks on top of each other, with no coherence in the mix. The music itself, the writing, is fucking sick. Anybody else hearing "Kiss Me" by Sixpence Nonethericher melody in there too? Lol. Right before the fade-out part that leads to the piano.
  22. Leave a Trace is growing on me. I'm not a big fan of the break-beat style thing they've got going on but a lot of the background synthy stuff in that track fucking rules. Like that "eee ooo ahh-ahhh" noise thing during the verses. I really wish they would strip their sound down and do more stuff like the Tiny Desk set. That thing is BRILLIANT. I can't really listen to the debut album because its too overwrought for me. Just give me Lauren's voice, a drum sequence, and a couple analog synths.... and we're good.
  23. I wonder if we can pester some of the remaining members to put it out on vinyl. I bought the last CD they had for sale. It's in my car now, and it rules. Listening to some Beware of Safety now, "It Is Curtains" on vinyl. Great group. Who wants to sell me their Pg.lost vinyl? I will pay you money for it.
  24. I've got it playing again right now. Just inspected it visually and couldn't find anything, which was weird. We'll see if it happens again. I contacted Mylene and they offered to replace side A/B for me which is fucking amazing. Those guys are literally the best. Oh, also, I have some updates on Cale:drew and Subsets: "Apologies on the belated response. We are just waiting on the vinyl re-master and the artwork, once those are done, we'll be getting everything into production for these Jakob vinyl reissues. I can't really give a concrete timeline since we're at the mercy of having everything handed off to us to get it going, but as soon as we have everything we're going to get them into production immediately The best answer I can give is ASAP. I can't imagine it taking much longer though, we'll update everyone in the next newsletter!! Thank you so much for your interest, we'll talk more soon!!" EDIT: Bah. There's a few scratches. Hard to spot at first, with them being over top a white section, but they're there. I stopped the record right before the place where I thought they were, and gently ran the record forward manually and voila, a couple of them super close together.
