whoa reacted to chunkrock in Best Ever Math Rock Album
I've got a few recommendations for current Canadian Math Rock bands that sound mostly influenced by late 90's early 2000's math rock and not "Math Core" stuff.
Baby Labour - from Guelph, Ontario. This album came out last year and is all instrumental. It's my favorite album of last year. I think fans of Piglet and bands like that would like this. It's two guitars and drums, the two guitarists use a lot of effects and when one of them is playing lead the other usually complements it with an octave pedal to play bass type parts.

Luge - This is another excellent album from last year. Mathy with a killer rhythm section. This one has some pretty weird moments, very dancy at times and mathy a as well. Great vocals on this as well.

Blessed - This is one of my favorite albums of this year. They are from Abbotsford (Vancouver) BC. I'm not sure how to compare this band but this album has some pretty interesting and sneakily technical passages. Sometimes the vocals remind me of Devo. They tour their asses off and are currently touring all over Canada and the US.

Don't think they posted that info, but it is an open preorder so probably not something you need to order immediately

Chiming in to report that Lynx is the shit. Felt like a slightly more melodic and accessible Don Caballero. But anyone who's into math rock knows that repeated listens are where the real magic happens, so I'm keen to spend some more time with it.

So much good stuff I need to check out in this thread.
Also, sadly defunct, but in a similar kind of happy vibe math rock https://youslut.bandcamp.com/album/critical-meat (there's an LP of this floating about that has this and another slamming album on it - cost effective!)
Edit: also this one particular Enemies album https://enemiesmusic.bandcamp.com/album/embark-embrace-2

Had to search the archives but saw You Slut! with Maybeshewill a few years ago and now I’m thinking of another band from that era - dananananaykroyd not that they’re math rock but you just jogged my memory.
Anyone mentioned 65dos yet (are they math rock?)? I’m away to listen to Retreat! Retreat!

Check out Clever Girl too. They only dropped one EP before dissolving but it’s pretty slick, and incorporates a lot more brass than you’d typically hear with your math rock.
Vasudeva and Giraffes? Giraffes! are both pretty nice, too. The latter of which really sparked my interest in the genre with their first 2 releases.

Probably the wrong board, and more fit for Everything Else. But I seldom get to chat about it so here goes.
New Lost in the Riots dropped today. Really enjoying it on the first few listens. Followup to 2014’s Move On, Make Trails which is just about as summer appropriate, feel-good, riff happy as it gets. The new record is a little less cheery but equally energetic, I dig it.
In a very similar vein, And So I Watch You From Afar. A little more on the bombastic side with huge guitar sounds as opposed to some of the most subdued ones posted so far. Their S/T is a gem and entirely worth checking out. It’s also getting a repress in the coming months after being OOP for a decade and costing triple digits on Discogs. Try them out so you don’t sleep on the repress when it happens. Pretty pivotal in my appreciation for the genre and many other “post-“ genres.
Everyone is sleeping on Totorro, out of France. A little less metal influenced than either of the above bands, if that’s your cup of tea.
The Mercury Program due away with a lot of the distorted, crunchy guitars and incorporate some jazzy drumming. Worth trying out if you’re looking to math & chill. Tommy beat me to it as I was typing this paragraph.
Don Caballero and Hella are forces be reckoned with but admittedly pretty dense if you’re just trying to explore the genre out of the gate. Hopefully something in this post strikes your fancy, to begin with.

SERIOUSLY! I love these guys. And I really love how they approach the genre. Just playing together. Nothing too crazy. But still great. And honestly pretty upbeat and happy. Which doesnt always happen

whoa reacted to mrewest in PO NOW: OWEL PARIS
To me it sounds like they’ve perfected everything they went for on S/T, Every Good Boy & Dear Me. Almost like the finale in a trilogy with a side film mixed in. The heavy emphasis on the strings & piano puts it over the top. I feel like their next album should be the time they start experimenting a bit with some new stuff. Because they won’t top Paris if they continue with this overall sound.
