    INT. HANK'S GARAGE - DAY

Walt looks over Hank's shoulder as Hank clicks the trackpad on the Macbook Pro.  We see that he is browsing a vinyl forum.

    WALT
So...this is what you do all day?

    HANK
Yeah, Walter.  It beats giving handies under the ABQ bridge.

    WALT
    What are we looking for...exactly?

    HANK
Well, right now there's a real scumbag flipping an ETID 7" for a $15 profit.  We have his VC username but we need to find his Discogs account in order to nail him.

Walt's curiosity spikes as he takes in this information.

    WALT
    They...make money doing that?

    HANK
Yeah, the bastards stand in line for 7 hours, buy a limited edition record, and then they flip it for $20-150 Washingtons.

Walt points to a JPEG of Deja Entendu.

    WALT
How much would I...theoretically...if I were to flip that record there, how much would I make?

Hank swivels in his leather computer chair to face Walt.  Hank gives him a cold stare.

    HANK
    If you flipped this record...

    Walt gives a hard gulp.

    HANK
    ...you'd make over $200.

    Walt's eyes open wide.

    HANK
But I'd have to take you down.

Walt snaps back to reality.  He realizes he's sweating.  A little too much.

    HANK
My own brother in law.  (Pause)

    The ensuing silence is deafening.

    HANK
I'm just kidding!  You'd never be able to pull off something like that.  You're an adult.  These dickholes are all under 30.  (to himself) Hah! Imagine that.  Walter White flipping White Stripes LPs.

Walt laughs along with Hank.  We see, however, that he is up to something in his mind.

He's just a symptom of the sickness of his generation unfortunately. They're terminally ill.

Also, I think I'm finally going to say it: I think most people on this board are a bunch of ridiculous fucking turds for their own specific reasons. I still like some of you in spite of it, though.

People flipping stuff sucks; no shit, right? But someone selling something months or years down the line doesn't come off as flipping to me, especially if they only have the one copy and they're sick of it taking up space.

People selling something within a week after it comes out, specifically asking for an inflated price is shitty...but equally as shitty are the people who just bitch. and bitch. and biiiiiitch about it. We all get it. People who flip records are assholes.

Kess, you're a turd. Just my opinion, but it's not because you're a flipper. I couldn't give two shits about that anymore. I just think you come off as an over-privileged, possibly misogynistic dude that tries waaaaay too hard to let people know he loves music. **News flash** Most people like music.

Edit: Do I care what you think about this? No. Should you care what I think about you? Don't care.

You came up in conversation outside of the boards yesterday, Juan:

The bride and I were driving home in her car and she has Musical Tourettes, so she flips stations like crazy. She ends up stopping on a song and begins singing it at the top of her lungs. I was unfamiliar with the song, but after it was over she looked at me and said, "I can't help it...I love me some Taylor Swift." I looked back and said, "You're not the only Juan."

Buys one record with the advertised discount:

Confirms buying multiple records at a discount because of company's mistake:

Coupon code get pulled when company realizes mistake and goes off the handle complaining that they won't let him further exploit the mistake by claiming that they are not standing by their statements:

Get's asked what he would do if they reversed the mistake and honored the coupon the way it was intended and ignores the question:

For real. I think since I can't actually see it.

So how does it work? A lot of it has to do with the shadows cast by the big green cylinder. As Adelson [creator of the illusion] explains, the brain has to assess how much light is coming off the surface of each square on the board. This is known as the luminance of each square, and the brain also has to figure out how much of the luminance (or lack thereof) is caused by the color of the square and how much is created by the shadows. So the brain has to figure out where the shadows are and then compensate for them, and that's where we start running into trouble.

Adelson  explains some of these processes :
"The first trick is based on local contrast. In shadow or not, a check that is lighter than its neighboring checks is probably lighter than average, and vice versa. In the figure, the light check in shadow is surrounded by darker checks. Thus, even though the check is physically dark, it is light when compared to its neighbors. The dark checks outside the shadow, conversely, are surrounded by lighter checks, so they look dark by comparison.

A second trick is based on the fact that shadows often have soft edges, while paint boundaries (like the checks) often have sharp edges. The visual system tends to ignore gradual changes in light level, so that it can determine the color of the surfaces without being misled by shadows. In this figure, the shadow looks like a shadow, both because it is fuzzy and because the shadow casting object is visible."

Part of the problem is where the squares are located. Most people know enough about checker or chessboards to know that a square will be the opposite color of all the adjacent squares. That means two squares that are next to each other, or separated by an even number of squares, should be different colors. Since squares A and B are two squares away, they logically should be different colors, and our brains  really  seem to want to think that as well.

But don't worry, says Professor Adelson. All this really means is that your brain is functioning the way it's supposed to:

"As with many so-called illusions, this effect really demonstrates the success rather than the failure of the visual system. The visual system is not very good at being a physical light meter, but that is not its purpose. The important task is to break the image information down into meaningful components, and thereby perceive the nature of the objects in view. "
