Free record giveaway... That's right FREE!

Recommended Posts

So in honor of my 1,000th post (this very one) I am giving away a record (thanks to captainaldous who did this recently and gave me the idea).

I recently won a free LP from a contest on here and thought I'd pay back the favor.

The album will be of the Punk Rock variety, so if that genre doesn't interest you then please dodn't post as I'd like to give this to someone who will listen to it.

Also I will pay for the shipping.

Here are the rules to enter:

You must have over 250 posts (sorry newcomers, stick around and you'll get there).

Tell me about the best concert you've ever been to and why it was the best.

Tell me your favorite album that you own.

And lastly tell me what your first vinyl purchase was and when you first started collecting.

I will pick a winner at random at 5PM CST on Friday 6/5/14 (tomorrow).

Good luck everyone

Best (recent) show would have had been the Menzingers in Pittsburgh at The Mr. Roboto (although the Banner Pilot mystery band set or Iron Chic's set at Fest 12 last year win hands down - but that's FEST. It's a party, not a concert!)

Mr. Roboto Project is a DIY venue, and is just fucking awesome in itself. The Menzingers just played one hell of a show and the setlist was just on point. They interacted with everyone, and everybody couldn't stop dancing. Truly a stand out show. Here's a clip!

But REALLY the best show of all time was Leftover Crack/Defiance, OH/Teenage Bottlerocket/Clit 45 back in 2006. Seriously, that line up is fucking insane. Plus underage drunk at the time. Notable mention : Against Me! in a living room.

Favorite album I own?

Jane Fonda's Workout LP! :P

First album purchase?

Anti-Flag - Die for the Government OR The Ataris - End is forever (I can't remember which came first)

First started "casually" collecting?

I think I was about 19/20 so 2005-2006.

I am sooooooo In!

Best concert: tie! MeWithoutYou/Coheed because both of those bands were at their peaks, and it was great, and Minus the Bear during the Planet of Ice tour. It was Halloween night and thriller played the whole time while we waited. It was 19 days until Bush was no longer president, and the atmosphere was just intense. Not to mention it was one helluva show.

Favorite Record: Nostalgic: Meatloaf - Bat out of Hell, Legit: Built to Spill - Ultimate Alternative Wavers

First record purchase and why I started collecting: 8 years ago I bought records just to put on my wall, the record was Tom Petty - Damn the Torpedos. Not much longer after that, I decided to hear what they sounded like haha, I was hooked.

This is great :)

1) The best concert / show I've been too was pretty recently. I saw Andrew Jackson Jihad play in small venue room in the back of a restaurant in Ventura, CA back at the end of last year. It was my third time seeing them, but it was great because the show was super intimate and they played as an acoustic two piece again (they have been playing as a full band for awhile now).

2) This is a tough one because it is always changing. Right now, I'll probably go with Desaparecidos - Read Music / Speak Spanish. I love the album, but I go through long stretches where I forget about it. But the past week I have been listening to it a lot again.

3) I can't remember my first vinyl purchase, because it was definitely a classic rock record and all of those in my memory blend into the records I got passed down from my parents. I distinctly remember going to Hot Topic around 06-07 and getting my first non-used, non-classic rock LPs. Iron Maiden - Number of the Beast picture disc, Bane - The Note picture disc, Sparta - Porcelain double LP. I do know that the first record I ever mail ordered was in 2009 from Interpunk, and that was Streetlight Manifesto - Somewhere in the Between.

The best concert I've been to was Weezer performing Pinkerton in full in 2012. My favorite band playing my favorite album? Amazing.

My favorite album I own? See above. Pinkerton Deluxe Edition.

I started collecting in late 2011. I made a whole bunch of purchases at once so I can't really remember what the first was. I believe it was NFG's S/T.

The best show I ever went to was Hoax and Graf Orlock at Unit B in Santa Ana on 12/07/12. That show was absolutely killer and what got me into liking fucked up hardcore. Graf Orlock came out and did a cover of More Human than Human by White Zombie, and I the vocalist looked just like Bronson from the movie, and ended with their classic movie soundclips and they played the Jurassic Park theme song why he crowdsurfed the entire venue from back to front. Video here actually:

Then Hoax went on and that was one of the more violent shows I went to. A girl lost her beanie and ended up stopping the set midway to ask Jesse (vocals) to complain about her beanie and she was crying and started fighting a dude who she thought took her beanie and got decked in the face. This whole beanie tragedy is legendary, and everyone who went to that show knows what you're talking about if you ever mention it. But the thing about Unit B is that it's a skatepark and has a staircase that goes to a second floor to drop in, and people were diving off the second floor into the crowd. It was really energetic and just plain memorable.

And here's a pic of that: 8257103864_b182be6556_z.jpg

Edit: Oops I forgot the other 2 parts. The first record I ever bought (2 years before I would get a turntable) was To the Beat of a Dead Horse by Touche Amore, I got it at their show in Pomona, and I was amazed to see it was white when I got home.

The favorite album I own is probably Three Love Songs - Ricky Eat Acid. It's just overall a beautiful sounding piece of art and I love to spin it while I'm working.

I started collecting about a year ago heavily.

the best show I've ever been to was into it. over it. in chicago last year for the record release of 'intersections'. me and my friends are from philly and did a 12 hour drive to see the show and hang out in chicago for the weekend. best iioi show I've ever seen and me and my friends did a shot with Evan from into it. over it. after the show ended which was cool.

favorite record I own is the record release edition of 'intersections' I picked up from that show. hand screened cover limited to 75, personalized with my name on it and an awesome souvenir from the trip. also the album itself is flawless.

the first record I bought was mobilize by anti-flag when I was around 12 years old. at that point I did buy it to hang on my wall but it was still the start of my collection. I bought a few records from then on but really got into building my collection about 3 years ago when I bought 'I'm wide awake, it's morning' by bright eyes.

thanks for doing this giveaway!

Tell me about the best concert you've ever been to and why it was the best.

Life of Agony in Grand Rapids with Far. Whitfield Crane was the lead singer at the time and he has an awesome vocal range and was the most energenic person I've ever seen on stage. He literally was hanging from the fire sprinklers over the crowd. I was also impressed by Far who at the time I'd never heard of but loved.

Runner up:

Pantera/Type O Negative/Neurosis/Deftones

Marilyn Manson before he wore makeup in 1994

Tell me your favorite album that you own.

Descendants - Everything Sucks. Not so rare now but was hard to get when I first got it and is one of my alltime favorite albums. When lyrics meet you at the right age, an album will stay with you.

And lastly tell me what your first vinyl purchase was and when you first started collecting.

I started collecting in 1996 and my first album I bought was Misfits- Die, Die, My Darling along with Cramps- Big Beat From Badville.

Best Concert & Why

Me First and the Gimme Gimmes at El Corazon in Seattle, WA - best show simply because Me First rarely tour and seeing them live was a blast, especially in such a small venue.  They were amazing as well.

Favorite Album

MxPx - Slowly Going the Way of the Buffalo

First vinyl purchase and year

Five Iron Frenzy "Miniature Golf Courses of America" 7" and that was back in 1998, I believe.

One of these days I'm going to find my own copy of MxPx - Slowly Going the Way of the Buffalo on vinyl.  I've been wanting that one for years.

Keep the responses coming people!!

I'm not a huge concert goer, but I recently saw Tobacco open for Flaming Lips. It was a little hilarious because I live in a cute little white America-type village, so I was the only person in the audience stoked to see him, and it showed. Nobody knew who he was or cared, you could see it on their faces. He eventually got his set cut short because he was showing that E.T. porn film while he was playing. Oops. Flaming Lips always put on a hell of a show, shit flying everywhere, I think he covered a Devo song too. Then he played Do You Realize?? as a second encore. Now, my girlfriend's a good bit younger than me - she had just graduated high school. She didn't go to prom with me because she had promised her gay friend they would go as a couple before she even knew me, so I said if Flaming Lips played Do You Realize?? then I'd still get my slow dance, and I did. I didn't expect to hear it, I assumed Wayne was probably sick of that song by now, but fortunately I was wrong.

My favorite album is still Them, Roaring Twenties - Future Sandwich. It's a juvenile math rock mess from a one-album band but it's absolutely incredible. A ton of love and work was put into that album. EDIT: Forgot to mention, no vinyl release of this, just cd boxes with a board game inside! If we're talking records, then at this very moment it's my Death Grips - Exmilitary that I just got, just because of the buildup and anticipation and always wanting it and assuming I'd never be stupid enough to shell out X amount of dollars. Well I was.

The first vinyl purchase I made was Stnnng - Dignified Sissy for $40, in October 2012. Looking back, that may not have been the smartest deal, but I was in love with that album at the time and my first trek to Discogs showed only one there so I snatched it up. I'm glad I did. Pretty raw yet melodic noise rock album where the singer just yells clever lyrics tunelessly. SO GOOD.

Cool of you to do this man. Wonder what I'll do for my 1k.

This is awesome that you're doing this!

Tell me about the best concert you've ever been to and why it was the best.

The best show I've ever been to was probably Saves the Day in Boston with Into It. Over It. and Hostage Calm. I've been into Saves the Day since I was in middle school and seeing them play old songs live was great. Also up there was seeing Envy play in Providence with Touche Amore. I hadn't heard much of Envy, but their sound was just so big and incredible. I don't think I have ever been so blown away by a band. It was at a small venue too with not too many people so we were really up close and getting the full experience. They were crazy.

Tell me your favorite album that you own.

My favorite record I own is actually the EP The Disco Before the Breakdown by Against Me! They were my favorite band at the time, and probably still one of my top favorites ever. But more importantly, it was one of the first records I owned after I got my first record player, given to me by my then girlfriend, now fiancee. I still have it and it's probably the only record I have right now that I've had throughout all my collecting.

And lastly tell me what your first vinyl purchase was and when you first started collecting.

The first records I received were The Disco Before the Breakdown by Against Me! and Welcome To Reality by the Adolescents. The first purchased, to the best of my memory, was the Minor Threat LP that compiles their EPs. Green cover and green vinyl.

This is awesome, and I know I don't qualify, but I just want to tell stories cause it sounds pretty sweet.

Tell me about the best concert you've ever been to and why it was the best.

Best concert I've ever been to was Mumford and Sons at Hollywood Bowl in LA in November 2012.  I was actually planning on flying to LA anyway for the Dear Jack Benefit that was Jack's Mannequin final show, and Mumford added this concert after I had already book and I had that day free, so it was essentially a bonus concert.  But it was their first show in the U.S. after they had released their Babel album, and the venue was absolutely incredible.  I had considered this a bonus concert, and it turned out to be the coolest concert experience I've ever been to.

Tell me your favorite album that you own.

Favorite album I own would have to be Jack's Mannequin Everything In Transit.  My favorite artist, his best work, and I paid out the ass for it.

And lastly tell me what your first vinyl purchase was and when you first started collecting.

First vinyl I received were Something Corporate "Leaving Through The Window" and "North" for Christmas this past year, and I've since dumped most of my free funds into vinyl.

This is one of the cooler giveaway ideas I've read on here, and I commend you for it.  Hopefully someday I'll have enough presence on here to do something similar.  Good luck to everyone else!

Best Show I've Ever Been To: This is a REALLY tough one! I'm going to say that seeing the Menzingers in Lansing, MI back in February was probably the best show I've ever been to. Not only did all the bands sound great, but I got to hang out with my rad Michigan friends! I love all those dudes so much!

My favourite album that I own: This is a totally loaded question, but, my favourite album that I own is Lillingtons - Death  By Television. A good buddy of mine from TX knew how much I loved the band, so he gave it to me for free. Ryan is honestly one of the kindest people that I know! I love that dude and am forever in his debt!

First album I ever purchased:Misfits - Static Age. I purchased this album when I was 14 years old, first year of high school. I started going to high school in a new town and I didn't know anybody there, but I immediately formed a friendship with a dude who liked the same music as me. So, the second week of high school his dad took us to Hamilton (his dad worked ALL day in Hamilton, drove 45 minutes to Brantford to pick us up, drove us BACK out to Hamilton and then drove us back to Bantford! ((his dad is nuts and such a rad dude!!!))). Anyway, while we were in Hamilton I wanted to check out a store called Cheapies and that's where I bought my first record, Misfits - Static Age, $11.99. The next morning I took it to the librarian at my school (he was really into punk & actually followed GG on tour back in 93), skipped all my classes that day and we just talked about music & records!

Word. That EP is absolutely fantastic. Against Me! was doing a bunch of signings on this past tour, and it was one of the two things from my AM! collection that I brought for James and Laura to sign.

Best Concert: The Wonder Years @ The Shot Shot in Zanesville Ohio...It was about two months after The Upsides came out and TWY were doing a few shows before they went onto a larger tour with Set Your Goals. Adam (VC name: KeepDoubting) and I got there early and had to use the bathroom which was on the other side of the stage. I stumbled upon Soupy sitting behind an amp and talked to him for a little bit. He told me not to buy Get Stoked On It! One of the opening bands was We Are The Union who put on a fucking great show and then The Wonder Years just destroyed the place. They had to stop after every song to get people to move off of the shitty plywood stage they were playing on. Also this was the time when Mike Kennedy went back to college so Nick was drumming for them instead of playing guitar. The highlight for me was holding Soupys leg when he crowd surfed to All My Friends Are In Bar Bands. Interesting side note...I got kicked in the face and had the lens knocked out of my glasses...the last time I ever wore my glasses to a show.

Favorite Album: Besides all of my The Wonder Years records (because I feel like that would be a cop out) I would have to say is probably my original pressing of Blink 182's Cheshire Cat. I was a huge Blink 182 fan back in the day and I pined over an original press of this album for years, even before I really got into collecting just because I thought it was such cool album art. It was also one of my first purchases on Dead Format and the guy that sold it to me (ozfactor) was really an awesome dude. That album really connects me to my childhood and I think it is pretty cool to own such an integral pop-punk record in its original form...

First Record: Kind of a two parter. The first record I ever bought in 7th grade was Blink-182's They Came To Conquer Uranus which turned out to be a misprint and had the are of that record but contained the music of the Lemmings split...I was pretty pissed about it at the time because I loved the song Zulu and couldn't listen to it...The next record I bought wasn't till years later when I got Manchester Orchestra's Mean Everything To Nothing from FYE for 9 bucks. That kind of started my addiction and I haven't stopped collecting ever since.

Thanks for doing this! Sounds awesome. I'm pretty sure I have the minimum required posts but I'm not sure to be honest. Anyway.

My favorite show I've ever been to was night one on the east coast of Brand New's full discog tour. Got to hear the devil and god in full, live. 'Nuff said.

I don't think I could pick a single favorite album. I really do cherish every one I own, but I am especially proud of some of the items in my beatles collection.

I've been collecting my whole life. A lot of the records I have are records I inherited and grew up playing since I was born. Almost all of my memories of the first few years of my life involve being in front of a turntable, which I guess isn't too common having been born in the digital age. The first record I remember actually purchasing is the 12" single for "Barbie Girl" by aqua... And damn did I play the hell out of that one.

Best Concert:

Rx Bandits at Colgate University on the Days Away Tour. Days Away van broke down and RxB played to possibly 20 people in one of the most intimate settings imaginable. I drove RxB to grab some beer at the local gas station prior to the show where they absolutely killed! Despite seeing them a dozen times at this point, that remains possibly my favorite performance, especially before losing the horns as most the set was Progress and Resignation tunes.

Tell me your favorite album that you own:

No possible way to choose just one, but I know I constantly spin Limbeck, Hi, Everything's Great and Copeland In Motion, as those are important records that have influenced my wife and I's relationships, road trips, etc.

And lastly tell me what your first vinyl purchase was and when you first started collecting:

I had to be 12, I purchased an Elvis boxset that I would listen to all the time at my grandparent's house growing up. I own that till this day. Such great memories.

Thanks for doing this!!!

I'll bite!

Best concert: I'd have to say Slapshot at Churchill's last year. I'd waited over 20 years to see them and they did not disappoint. Played everything I wanted to hear.

Favorite album that I own: That's a tough one, but I'll pick the NYHC Look at All the Children Now comp with silkscreened cover and a note of apology for being super delayed.

First record purchase: Devo - Q: Are we Not Men A: We are Devo back in maybe 1983. I've been collecting more or less since the late '80s although there have been gaps in there.

Awesome idea and thanks for doing this! I may have to do the same here shortly.

Favorite Concert:

I've got a lot of good concert memories but I think my favorite would be seeing Brand New for the very first time this last year when they did their full discography tour. I got to go to all three night an Night 3 where I got to hear one of my all-time favorite records The Devil & God in full was something I'll never forget. I also ended up with TDAG setlist and a drumstick from that night and got to hang out with a bunch of awesome people here from the VC boards.

Favorite Record:

Really hard to pick a favorite, but a few notable standouts.

- Relient K: Forget and not slow down. I could listen to this record over and over, I think they did a standout job on this one.

- Thrice: Alchemy Index. 'Nuf said.

- As Cities Burn: Son, I Loved You At Your Darkest

First Record I Owned/Puchased:

Had a Little Tykes or something turntable back in the day. Would listen to Disney records I got from my parents.

My first purchase years later when I was in high school was a copy of Relient K's The Vinyl Countdown. I slowly picked up steam after that and really just expanded my collection in the last 5 years.

This is awesome! Cool stories here!

Favorite Concert:
Saw Appleseed Cast on tour when Peregrine came out with Criteria and Russian Circles opening for them, pre Brian Cook right after Enter came out. I was already familiar with Criteria, who are amazing as it is, but that was my introduction to Russian Circles. I had never seen or heard anything like it and was in love right from the get-go! It was a small crowd in a small venue so I got to see everything up close and it was just such an array of emotion coming from the bands, love the variety when seeing shows. The drummer from RC had a unicorn painted on his bass drum, and a light behind it so it glowed, which he still does regularly at shows. Appleseed Cast ruled and I almost cried at the end of the show from how good it all was. 3 of my favorite bands to this day. Runner ups are seeing Coheed and Hopesfall play together when Second Stage Turbine Blade and Satellite Years came out, and behind that I saw Brand New, TBS, and Rufio all on tour for their first albums. DOPE. ALSO, The Format would play a looot of acoustic shows when just their EP was out. There was only ever about 20ish people at their shows and I remember one time when my friends and I were standing up front, Sam put down his guitar pick on the floor monitor, turned around for a minute, and my buddy put his pick in his mouth and set it down. Sam had the most confused look on his face after picking it up again haha. I asked my friend why he did it and he just said 'how often can you do something like that?' made no sense, but is a good memory nonetheless.

Favorite Record:
Jimmy Eat World- Futures. I traded that Horse the Band pizza box for this about 4 years ago and have considered it the best move I ever made. I grew out of Horse the Band, but the JEW album is still one of my favorites!

First Record I Owned/Puchased/When I Got Into Collecting:
Got hand me down records from my dad, Journey, CSNY, etc, but the first purchase I remember was from a now defunct local store and it was the Bled's first EP before they enlisted James on vocals. Its the single sided one with a spray painted cover /666. After that I would follow Graveface putting out the Appleseed Cast releases and buy them as they came out, have never had to pay aftermarket prices on any of those! Got seriously into collecting at the end of 2010. In June 2011 I quit my office job of 6 years to work at a record store. Best decision I've ever made :)

I'm going to go for the triple crown:

My favorite show I've ever been to was seeing Slow Gherkin and Edna's Goldfish at the Firefox Lounge in Minneapolis in '98 I believe.  A little hole in the wall venue in the back of a deli, and having all of Slow Gherkin crammed up on a little box was amazing.  They were my favorite group back then, and they still are.

Favorite album I own would have to be Slow Gherkin - Shed Some Skin.  Not a single sub par track.  I love this album so much that I hardly ever listen to it if that makes any sense at all.  I've heard it a million times, but nowadays I'll throw it on maybe two or three times a year.  A classic album.

First album I bought, I'm not really sure, but I'm going to say Slow Gherkin's 'Death Of A Salesman' 7" at said show.  In fact I know this isn't the first album I've bought, but for all intents and purposes. . .
