Monastic_mike
So Killing Joke is re-releasing a bunch of their classic stuff on Picture Disc. While I'd love to have these to hang, I ultimately buy them to play. They are about the same price as a VG+ used copy on Discogs so I'm wondering if its worth it or just buy regular discs used. Thanks
Thomas³
Pictures discs are usually terrible. Super thin vinyl, so it wears out fast and usually has plenty of surface noise.
Monastic_mike
I have a recent disc which is 2 thin records pressed together with a paper insert. I would think these would be better than the traditional silk screened variety but what do I know.
throughbeingcruel
Rhymesayers puts out literal fuckloads of picture discs and I've yet to buy one that sounds bad. As for other labels, that's a whole different ballgame. I always steer clear unless it's the only way to have it on vinyl. stl_ben
Some Picture discs sound bad some dont Some regular records sound bad, some don't. Some lathes sound bad, some don't. Sure lathes or splatter or picture discs may have a higher probability of sounding bad, but if an artist wants to put a good one it is very possible to do that. ethereal
I've noticed that Pirates Press makes a good picture disc. All of mine from them sound great
Monastic_mike
I'm unsure. I want his album and could care less about it being a picture disc, but this disc will be played. A lot. Often. and if it sounds shitty I'll be pissed. Decisions, desicisons....

True, but there are many people who buy discs based on how pretty they are. There's obviously a market for cool looking discs regardless of pressing quality and I want to avoid that. chiefwahoo
I'd buy the used, regular discs every time. In the 80s, some picture discs had this printed right on them, and rightfully so: "Sound quality of this picture disc may not be comparable to that of a conventional record"
freedumb
They've definitely gotten better and can sound great or not, just like any other record. ethereal and stl_ben
TheGhostOfRandySavage
No one has mentioned that they're also harder on your needle than a conventional record because of the material they're made from.
