debyrne82
I was wondering if anyone knows what's up with poor quality records from epitaph. The bad religion boxset had issues on a couple of Tr LPs. Skipping/skating. So did the reissue o the first 7". I recently got a nofx white trash LP repress and it's horrible also. I can increase the counterweight or I guess decrease... And that gets rid of most of the problems. Then recently a friend told me that would damage my stylus. True? Has anyone else had any issues with epitaph? From what I read it's mainly represses, any one have issues? I read on another board about a nofx LP boxset in the near future but I'm a little Leary. jipc
My john k samson record sounds pretty bad with loads of crackles/noise. And the blue version of weakerthans left & leaving reissue has the very opening second missing and again loads of cracklin and noise. A shame because l&l is one of my fave records. geezfools
this topic is pretty well hashed out in this forum form when those repressings originally came out:
monsterrod
Yeah, my Punk In Drublic is unplayable. Also, there was that mess with the Tom Waits represses.
gogokain
I have White Trash on purple, yellow, and white, and they all skip in the exact same spots. I had issues with the BR box set, mainly No Substance. Kingsroad sent me a replacement that was slightly better, but still unacceptable. jipc
Shit man i had no idea that there were so many issues with these records. Damn thats pretty poor.
debyrne82
My no substance is also the worst by far... It's a damn shame because these albums I grew up listening to. On cd of course. And it was so exciting g to get them on vinyl... In a positive not the op-ivy reissues don't skip at all. I guess if the nofx boxset comes out I'll wait and see wha others experience. Thanks for all the replies jipc
burntwolf
My first copy of the latest Menzingers was so bad I sent it back. The 2nd copy is better, (both blue) but it still sounds like ass, esp. when I'm playing a bunch of records comparing it the one before and after it. I didn't have any issues w/ any of the reissues tho that a lot of people were complaining about. OpIvy, BR Against the Grain, No Control, Hell, Nofx SLATFATS, Offspring Ignition/Smash reissues all sound fine for me. They seem to be under the impression that color vinyl is supp to sound like crap (cuz they told me a black would sound better), which I have not found to necessarily be the case 99% of the time. mclz
I guess I'm one of the lucky ones who never got a record that skipped from Epitaph. Although about 10 years ago I bought a copy of Osker's Treatment 5 at my local record store and it skipped really bad and they let me trade it in for another copy when I came in the day after, but that skipped bad too and this time they wouldn't let me trade it for something else so I just kept it. debyrne82
I wonder what pressing plant they use? They really should switch. I hope failed stated comes out okay. The euro pressing is perfect 180 gram in orange no issues what so ever. If the blue skips I may have to give up on epitpah. If they really beloved color didn't sound as good why sell it at all? That makes them seem cheap.... From my experience someone surface noise is present on splatter vinyl but unless your an audiophile with a 15k stereo you wouldn't notice the difference between opaque red and black. brentoage
i'm worried about failed states. supporting caste sounded like shit (i know it's not an epitaph release, but still). hoping.
debyrne82
Someone told me the german pressing of supporting caste was great I keep my eye out for that. Here is to Hoping though. I listened to my refuses rsd shape of ... And it's solid all the way through. Hit or miss I guess
almightyseancore
i've spun every disc on my bad religion box set at least twice, and i don't recall having any problems. those are the only colored epitaph releases i have on colored vinyl. my copy of heavy petting zoo skips a few times, but i've had it for around 15 years and it's not in the best shape. come to think of it, i don't have much epitaph on vinyl. moonbeams
I had terrible skipping problems until I upgraded to a nice turntable, then no more skipping.

I think they press their records at RTI, which is supposed to be one of the best plants in the US. And I'm pretty sure I read somewhere they used very old stampers from the 90s to repress their catalog on vinyl. That might be the problem. I guess making new stampers wouldn't put them out of business at all. They're not that expensive considering the volume of records they sell. geezfools
karl said new stampers were made for the second round of represses, though lots of people still complained...
rudeboydh
All my Slackers and Rancid records sound great. I have no complaints so far.
debyrne82
I don't think it's a turn table issue. I mean my tt isn't audiophile but it's descent. Ans set up properly... Also it doesn't skip on any other releases. Even a noticeable warp on something fr byo doesn't affect play.

I think it's a little of both. Lots of my epitaph represses had real bad skipping issues on my old cheapo turntable. On my nice turntable the same records do not skip. However, lots of records played just fine on that same old cheapo turntable, so it's definitely not an excuse for Epitaph, but worth noting. GradedOnACurve
its not always skipping but sound quality too. Some are hit or miss. I thought my Weakerthans "Left And Leaving" sounded great and was glad they upped it to a 2XLP but I also had two copies of Refused "Songs To Fan The Flames.." My white RSD Euro pressing of that sounded way better than my Red US pressing. Sold the Red one.
debyrne82
Yeah I think what every plant they use in Europe is tops. My orange failed states is great sounding. Can't wait to compare it to the blue us version... If that ever gets released
