THE FUTURE OF THE GOP

Recommended Posts

I wish this two party bullshit would end, that way the majority of voters who just vote on party lines would actually have to do research on their candidates.

I agree. No one gives a fuck about issues anymore.. it's no different than Red Sox vs. Yankees at this point. You're either one or the other, and no one is going to sway you.

^ No sir. That would put us at 1763. We wuz colonies then.

Also parties Presidents have represented are: Republican, Democrat, Democratic-Republican, Whig, National Republican, Independent, National Union, and Federalist.

George Washington had no political party. He also warned about the dangers of them.

List is here: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/List_of_Presidents_of_the_United_States_by_political_affiliation

I wasn't being precise with the 250 years thing. Is it a big deal if I said 220 years instead?

The names of the parties have changed and the key ideas they ran on, but anytime a new one was created it pushed an old one out. Always a 2 party system. Speaking crudely, it was farmers vs. industrialists, north vs. south, labor vs. management, rich vs. poor, depending on the political climate and the state of the country. But always 2 parties, with occasional transition periods.

I knew you were joking bout the 250. That why I said we wuz colonies. Actually I think that was lil Wayne.

As for the two parties generally speaking yeah there generally has been two dominating parties, but not to the point of the present day. Alternative parties generally have a least some representation in Congress, but that is almost non-existent today. Its sad.

Two prevailing parties sort of makes sense in an era where information travels slowly. Those two labels take on different regional contexts, based on key themes and how people are choosing to interpret core concepts. Obviously, that still happens today. It's hard for fringe elements to gain traction when getting your message out takes money and needs a pretty intense infrastructure. But that just isn't the case today. Feels like the real problem today is apathy.

We are seeing a growth in third-parties at the local level, at least in VT, with lots of progressive, socialist and independent candidates getting elected. I'd imagine the same might be true in heavy red states, though obviously those third parties are going to be a BIT different.

Glad he didn't.  He may have actually won.  I feel like in 2016 we're going to get a Republican president regardless, so I'd rather it be him than anybody else.

I feel this way too, I thought it was pretty admirable, relatively speaking that he didn't play politics during the Sandy thing when the President was supporting him as a President should.

If he wakes up and smells the reality socially he'd actually be a decent reflection of how a conservative politician can be a decent human being.

and he is very very too fat.

Just don't think we will ever see more than two parties on a national level. People don't vote for who is best for them, they look at the one or two who has a chance to win and take the least objectionable option. So an independent might get enough support on a local or regional level to have a chance to win, but they won't be able to do it nationally. And when the next shift in our country happens and a new party does rise up, it will eat up one of the Democratic or Republican party by stealing their constituents.

ugh... I think Chris Christie should run in 2016.  Not that I like him or any of them, it just seems like he's the only one with any kind of soul, common sense and a little compassion to fellow human beings...

If you held a public servant job in New Jersey you wouldn't be so quick to say that.

The GOP sure do need something to light a fire under them between now and 2016 though.
