Stoner/ Doom Metal Discussion Thread

Recommended Posts

Haha, I seriously hope this was a joke

Not sure if you were referring to anyone in particular from this thread, but i've been listening to heavy music since the mid-80's and stoner rock since the early 90's and I am far from what your post described.. I've been to hundreds of shows and I don't recall seeing to much of what you described especially people lying on the floor at a show. I've seen shows where there was 6 people in the crowd and when I left the show I felt like my ears were bleeding.I much rather see a show at a small venue or bar than one of those huge arenas, festivals or even a venue that holds over 500 people.

I was not referring to anyone in particular & yes, it was mostly meant as a joke. The overly complicated part was a reference to the post right before it in this thread. The selfie-sticks at EHG shows was made up.

As far as the lying on the floor thing goes & TheFrog's response, did you go to these shows in the 90s or just listen to the music? I'm 39 & played in doom/sludge bands in the late 90s to mid-2000s. I saw this happen at Sunn shows in the late 90s, Boris & even at a couple shows in the band I was playing in around that time. Could have happened more than this but I was usually pretty out of my mind to notice/remember.

Attila/Void talks about Sunn shows in the early 2000s where people brought sleeping bags to lie in in this interview: http://www.thewire.co.uk/in-writing/interviews/sunno_exclusive-interview-transcripts_attila-csihar

Although I'm sure it was a joke, I have to say it was really weird going to see sleep, and being like "who wants to smoke this joint?" And...nobody really wanted to. I smoked with some stranger.

What a shame. The most pot I've seen smoked at a show in the last 10 years was at a funk fest while Dennis Coffey played a few years ago. 50% of the crowd was over 50 years old but I'd guess 90% of the crowd was smoking & passing joints around. The break is fire!

It's pretty obvious that we never attended the same shows. I don't listen to Sunn, but I never saw people lie down at Boris shows that I went to.

Did anyone see or check out the 5 LP saver package by Cardinal Fuzz & Captcha records?

5 new records by Shooting Guns(stoner), Foul Tip(D&B??) & 2 by Dreamtime(psych?).

I've never heard any of the bands but the song they posted by Shooting Guns is pretty good IMO. An instrumental with a sound that lands somewhere between Karma To Burn & Earthless.

Shooting Guns are pretty good, we were talking about them a couple days ago because they have a split with Zaum (who are awesooooome).

I was debating whether or not to grab the split.

Any of you dudes still waiting on your Goya from STB? The snow seems to have fucked up my mail for a good week, so maybe it's still getting sorted. I just worry that the longer it's out there in the world the more opportunity for that sweet sweet triple gatefold to get fucked up.

Graves At Sea's "The Curse That Is" is up on Relapse.  The Deluxe sold quickly but the blue/gold merge looks kinda purty.

Since I'm usually only a reader & not a poster to this thread, I'll get my posting's worth with this one.

On a separate subject, Consequence of Sound did a list of metal albums to watch for 2016.  CoS isn't exactly the epicenter of all things metal & I'm not sure how I feel about their referring to 2016 as a year of metal renaissance but whatever.  It's a decent list.
