Again, not trying to shit on you. I've thought about this too - as have most Canadian record buyers - the landscape for online record buying in Canada is pretty barren outside of Amazon. There are plenty of folks here who would be thrilled to see you succeed, but are just skeptical because it is really fucking hard to make this work.

If you ever run any discounts, I run a Facebook page called Cheap Vinyl in Canada, which is exactly what it sounds. Send me a message and I'll share a post.

I checked out your prices. They are still significantly higher than Amazon. I can't figure out why I wouldn't just buy from Amazon.ca. I see too that you plan to price-match. But then, when you're selling Bon Iver's For Emma for $30, and Amazon has it for $18, you're out 1/3 of the cost once tax is added in. Are you going to make any money like that?

I'm glad you found a way to do cheap shipping. That makes a huge difference. But if you want to actually find a market in Canada, don't just go for the major label releases. Contact US and European independent labels and try to become a distributor for some of the stuff that would otherwise be prohibitively expensive to order directly from the label. Especially if you can get access to a few of the rarer variants from certain labels, this would help.  Or even get stock from some of the bigger Canadian Indie labels (Arts & Crafts, Paper Bag, Dine Alone, etc.) so that someone could order all of their stuff at once rather than from different labels.

I hope you can succeed. But I think you need a bit more refining as to what you want this to be. If you want it to be the place where Canadians buy records, you'll need to up your inventory into the tens of thousands. If you'd rather keep it small, pick a niche and stick to it. My advice would be to sell stuff that Amazon doesn't - small indie labels with no organic Canadian distribution (or limited distribution). If you can get labels to send stuff near the border and then pick up, you might be able to make a few bucks (Chisel Records was doing a great job of this for a while with mostly punk stuff, but have slowed down in the past little while). Otherwise, I can't see this doing well enough to survive.

That's actually easy to do. Go to the Vinyl Records Page, and then to Records under $19.99. Then look in the address bar for where it says 1999, and change that number to 1499 or whatever, and that can be your new price criteria.

The Hayden love knows no boundaries. I picked one up for myself as well. Super excited for this album - I have such a special affinity for this era. My family was travelling by car to Vancouver in 1998, and I looked in the classifieds to find out that Hayden was playing a night we were there, and awkward 14-year-old me went on my own to see him. I picked up a copy of Carry On Mentality (later badly damaged and since sold), and it just felt like a really special night. It was 17 years before I saw him live again (though have seen him three times in the last few years).  Can't wait to get this.

I have no knowledge on any of this, but one suggestion I have is look into what you could do to make your store a little more unique. Live music space, coffee shop, or whatever else vinyl collectors are into. Create a destination, not just another store.

I haven't subbed for a few months, but I'm listening to the Ayalew Mesfin right now, and it's really good. I am not nearly versed enough in much of the music of this part of the world or era (other than William Onyeabor, who I absolutely love), but this is great. And I love the story/background too.

Can a brown guy chime in?

Unpopular opinion: I don't think being racist is the worst thing a person could ever be (I.E. a rapist or murderer is significantly worse). I also don't think people exercising their freedom of association makes them inheritly evil. People tend to gather with other people who look like them, and making a law that insists they need to interact with other people isn't going to curb any ill will they may have towards individuals of different ethnicites.

I also have absolutely  no problem with someone using their "privilege" to their advantage, inherited or not we're all different people with completely different backgrounds and situations. Some people's lives suck a lot more than others. A poor family on welfare in the US still lives significantly better than a poor family in Sudan does.

You can be white and poor, in fact in '07 PBS put out a study that said 41% of the homeless population is white, with the second highest being African Americans at 40%.  Since I'm talking statistics, it's worth mentioning that Asian people in American are far better off than most white people (they excel in wealth, education, and even live longer). Does that make them racist? I don't think so (or really care). And yes, you can absolutely be racist towards white people. Demeaning any individual because of the color of their skin is what racism is. You can't just change the definition of a word to fit your agenda.

If this level playing field you guys speak of based on the idea that the state should forcibly acquire another individual's property to disperse amongst people who have less then that's terrible. You're advocating for theft via the threat of violence against peaceful individuals.

If the level playing field is that everyone in America has the same individual rights and their own personal actions determine what their quality of life will be,  then I would agree and also argue that playing field is already in effect. The things that set this off balance are usually products of the state, like The War on Drugs, artifical prices on labor, housing, low incentives for high skilled workers to enter public services like education, etc.

You guys really should stop pointing the finger at your neighbor who has little to no power over any of this and start questioning your goverment. If the Puerto Rican guy across the street doesn't like Asian people that's not going to effect anyone's life, but a cop throwing a black or brown man in a cage and taking him away from his family because he had too much of a plant they didn't want him to have drastically impacts his and his family member's lives.

    -My best friend/coworker/manicurist/frogsitter is black
-What about all of the non-white people who are violent and addicted to drugs
-How come liberal media only reports on racism and not on rich white guys like me who don't see skin colour?
-It's not fair that all of you libtards are ganging up on me. I need a safe space
-I really fucking love Kid Rock, literally the only musician who agrees with me on anything.
-I'm one of those people who believes that every Muslim including Obama is out to kill us because Alex Jones told me so.
    -Shut up, that's why.

I had this same discussion with my sister and it ended with both of us screaming "Fuck you!" as loud as we could, over our cellphones. She was talking about all of these mythical freeloading welfare moms and telling me about how she pulled herself up from her dead end bartender job and went back to college to achieve more in her life. Now she lives in a million dollar gated community in Orange County and still feels like she needs a gun in the house for security. She is delusional about how much of a foot up we had over many other people. Of course, she forgot about how we were middle class, my parents bought us our first cars, we had full health insurance coverage, and always had some measure of security that we could borrow a small amount of money if we got in a really tight jam. Yes, we both worked hard to get where we are, BUT we had many advantages. People who can't see that are just fuckin' stupid.

This exactly. As someone from a populated city I've noticed racism truly doesn't exist in rural/mountain areas devoid of PoC that's why it's such a non issue to them though /s

Seriously though my sister is half black and I'm as white as you get the things I hear when I take her places would seriously confuse some of you that don't see color. Keep on with your ostrich mentality though.

"I don't notice skin color!" and "What about when black people kill white people that doesn't make the news!" not only contradict each other, but work to try to erase the struggle of people of color. Historically and in present time. Which is a product of racism. Racism isn't just someone burning a cross or yelling "I hate [racial slur]s!" Racism is systematic. It's deeply ingrained in our society and assholes like you are part of the problem.

Nah man, the reason that "I don't even see skin color" is bullshit is not because it's inherently racist of the individual to have that stance, it's because it's willful ignorance.

Racism exists, it creates an unfair power and privilege dynamic, and reasonable people don't just try not to be racist themselves but they also try to counterbalance that racism.    It's not about fighting other people's battles, just SEEING skin color and realizing that there are things you can do to help the situation.

It's great you're not racist, if you don't notice/see/believe that other people are and that it impacts those they look down on negatively then you're an asshole.
