It's usually immediate but their referral system can get wonky.  I'd check with the person who's link you used and see if they have theirs.  If not, one of you contact info@ with both email addresses and they will usually just apply them.

If they used it on announcement day I'd email them.  Sometimes referrals get messed up on announcement day.  I find if they don't show up the same day they aren't go to show up.  

While I was waiting for Sound of Vinyl to get back to me on my deffective copy (4 days later), I decided to give it another try.  I noticed that it actually wasn't the scratch making the popping but there was a piece of black debris on it.  I decided to try and scratch it off since I figured my copy was defective anyway.  I got it off, gave the record another cleaning and now it plays fine.  Good thing because SOV finally got back to me today and I'd have to send it back first (at my expense).

I thought we all just agreed a couple months ago to only post referral codes in your signature so every other post isn't someone asking for or offering a code.  

They don't HAVE to.  The add-on is voluntary and they are paying an extra subscription but getting an extra album every month.  Not sure what sucks about that?

I can't answer all of that, but I do believe that I saw recently on the forum one of the staff members say that you shouldn't  get hit with any customs fees and if you do they usually credit that amount to your account (not refund it, but give you that amount in store credit).  So if that's what your worried about hopefully that answers your question.

I don't think many are new at digging into music in general but I think it's that a lot of them have a certain genre that they're comfortable with and so may different genres get discussed/hyped over there that they may be digging into areas that they may not have before.  

The one staff member over there did say this would rank third after Gorillaz and Fiona for the biggest bombsell they've ever released.  Of course, that's all subjective.  

Sometimes I get the impression that the couple of staff members that are regulars on that forum aren't the ones that make the decision on this.  They seemed to not know about Haim until the day it was released.  So it's possible they just don't want to mis-speak and give wrong information.
