Mcpherson is always picky about his production – not there's anything wrong with that – and I will 100% agree that the grittier atmosphere of Carnavas is something I'm a lot more interested in, and find myself appreciating when I return to it.  Can't fault the guy for not feeling this new single.  It is a little weird to hear them so polished and I'm admittedly not a huge fan of how squeaky clean it is.
 
But Juan's point is valid – I don't think anyone was expecting 2019 SSPU to sound like they were going to revisit Swoon glory days.  D/evolution can be... interesting, for better or worse.  All in the eye of the beholder, I guess.  That being said, I think the song has some great hooks and does some cool things.  It won't be scratching the SSPU itch in the same way those first 2 albums (and even Pikul) do, but I'm interested to hear more.

On a previous release of his he e-mailed me out of the blue and asked me if I was interested in buying it. Hoping the same happens for Star Fox.
 
 
 

Possibly. I just disagree with it. It’s musically great but the mixing is awful. Just a disappointing case of missed potential imo.

It’s also a lathe. And besides Super Mario World that label has huge quality issues. Be warned.

One online publication doesn’t get to corner an opinion on music.  “Welp Pitchfork loves the record so I guess I gotta’ hate on it otherwise I’m a drone.”  Do people really think like this?  You are aware that people are allowed to form and adhere to their own perceptions of an album, right?  AF is weak af because James’ vocals melodies and delivery are forgettable, lyrics are grossly basic and teeter on cringe, and the entire thing flows in one ear and out the other barring 3 or so highlights.  This conclusion was arrived at well before Pitchfork posted any kind of review, as made apparent by the time stamps in this text chat with a friend;
 

 
I know it’s a big and scary world out there with adults forming their own opinions and interpretations of music, but you should give it a shot sometime.  No one single website or source should dictate how you feel about music and you’re a child if you feel otherwise.

My favorite Derek album is Derek's Dirtybirds I bought a copy in Istanbul back in '99 and I've kept it in a hand-woven silk outer sleeve ever since.  It's in peak form and at the time I only payed about 16 Turkish Lira.  No one even knew what vinyl was at the time - everyone was spending their Lira on Cherry Coke Slurpees and hotdogs. I had him make it out to Joe - that's not my name, but I figured when I go to flip it on ebay in a few decades there is bound to be a fan named Joe out there willing to pay a pretty penny. I had another copy way back, but I traded it around '04 for a pristine copy of Shleby's seminal classic Shlabia. Another vinyl album i'm quite proud of...
