I listening to the whole thing on vinyl yesterday after streaming it a bunch of times. It sounded even better on my speakers vs. headphones. That listening experience basically erased every quibble I had and probably cemented Ohms as my second favorite Deftones album. I threw on Gore right afterwards and realized how disjointed and awkward that album is, not to mention the production, which was fatiguing and made it even tougher to get through. I revisited KNY in the past week as well and still love it, but I think Ohms edges it out just a bit. I need to tackle SNW again, that's the one I overlook the most.
The color contamination argument is of course asinine, but it's definitely true that quality control is well below what it should be for the majority of current pressings. Unfortunately the only way to improve it is to raise hell until those in charge of production get the message. I also think for those of us who err on the perfectionist/OCD side of the spectrum this issue can get blown out of proportion. You have to expect imperfections from this format. But when it comes to issues like non-fill, physical damage on new records, off-center spindle holes, or poor mastering we have to call that nonsense out, it's all preventable. I do feel bad for record stores and labels who have to deal with returns due to screw ups beyond their control, it's a tough gig as is.
I always have mixed feelings with new SP stuff... I go in open-minded but with low expectations, and I can usually find some positives, but then things just don't stick for very long. I think the biggest disappointment for me as a life-long fan is that everything they've done since they started declining commercially is clearly marked by an effort to get back to their original relevance, instead of just making whatever the hell they wanted, which is what made them great to begin with. Although, I gave Oceania another listen recently and I have to say it's holding up really well. As a sequence of songs I think it's actually stronger than Machina. All it's really lacking is that unhinged side of the SP spectrum that we will likely never hear again (think XYU, etc.), and there are a few unfortunate lyrical choices, but all in all it's a beautiful record that really should have made a bigger splash.
Anyhow, these new singles are sneakily catchy and I'm enjoying them; it definitely feels like a more upbeat continuation of The Future Embrace.

This new record is really strong... I'm getting tons of Silver and Gold era SF59 vibes, but they throw enough left turns throughout the album to keep it very engaging.
Very exciting. It's looking as if Gold will be a 45rpm 2x12", 500 on black, 500 on gold vinyl according to a poster on the SF59 FB group. That seems like an awfully low number so I hope I'm not traveling while it drops. I'm also curious to hear how the remaster will sound. The original pressing isn't great and the album has a pretty unusual sound to begin with, with it's buried drums and sections of blown-out distortion. More than anything I hope interest in this band's catalog keeps growing. I think they were ahead of their time and should have been much bigger than they were.
I get it. I love and appreciate all of these bands. Rosetta and Mouth of the Architect are among my favorites as well. But what Cult of Luna has done impresses me the most on a gut impact level, and I also think that in comparison to the reverence many people have for Isis and Neurosis in particular, CoL is a bit underrated.
This has been the case for a while. Before "Salvation" got repressed, OG copies were going for $100+ on Discogs. I nearly pulled the trigger myself.
He kind of has a point though. It could be that Cult of Luna is continuing to grow and write great music while the Isis catalog stays put.... but I see where he's coming from. Isis is inherently independent.... their material stands alone, but they do a different thing. They went for the cosmic groove where the universe swallows itself up and you're blasted out of a cannon into a psilocybe cosmic vortex with all these hypnotic, low-dynamic grooves (ie: So Did We, The Beginning and the End, Weight). Cult of Luna does it but in like, a loud sense. Same intensity, different dynamic levels.
Also False Light still makes me want to punch walls and pick up change like when I was 16.
Mine is also missing. Consider it more of a poignant statement, rather than an annoyance!
I'm listening to it now and it's basically the same with the added bonus of more flips. My dog (who has great hearing btw) tells me it sounds wider, fuller, snappier (and also that she wants to be fed in return of this knowledge).
While I've always liked Tool, they've never been a favorite. When I first heard them as a kid I was mostly into much heavier stuff, and Tool's edgy image didn't seem to match their more melodic sound. My friends were obsessed with them though so I became pretty familiar with the first couple records. The first album that I actually got into was Lateralus, which would probably still be my pick as their best work. I went back and picked up my own copies of Undertow and Aenima a few years later. Those are both really good, but to my ears Undertow sounds a bit dated at this point, while Aenima comes off as front-loaded, I find the second half of that record irritating and not all that interesting. 10,000 Days has songs I enjoy but as a whole I never loved it. Fear Inoculum zeroes in on my favorite aspects of the band, which is the interplay between the four members and the unique sound they produce. I love the drawn out, chugging pace, which was a very pleasant surprise and mentally I was able to lock into the flow of the record immediately. What many people find long-winded or boring for some reason made this album more accessible to me. I'm not someone who usually gives lyrics much thought, but I think Pneuma in particular is poignant. Of course there's nothing mind-blowing about the whole "we are one" cliche, but I like the nuanced way the song points to something inherently good in the fiber of humanity which is too often crushed or neglected. I've listened through the album about ten times or so, and I do think it's missing something. Most of the songs just feel like there's another gear the band could have found to really hit them out of the park compositionally. There's a sense of calculated restraint that defines the whole record, and it's amazing in its own way, but it could have been great to have a few moments where that becomes totally unhinged. Some kind of unexpected element integrated in some clever way would have made this stronger as a whole... in that regard the interludes are a bit of a missed opportunity, though I don't dislike them. All in all I'm still enjoying this album immensely.
