Piazza was a horrible defensive catcher. I see no problem with denying him the honor of a first ballot vote. He will go in next year or the year after and it will be deserved but I believe that first-ballot entry is a special thing. Piazza to me is alike a reverse Ozzie Smith - amazing at one side of the game. Ozzie waited, now Piazza will too.

God I love Alex Jones. No one makes crazy seem as cool as he does.

The sad thing is, if he toned down his act he had some interesting counter points but they get lost in the flood of nutjob.

I dont want to seem like Debbie Downer or anything but instead of bitching about this happening and signing useless internet petitions why dont you all go out and get trained to volunteer at your local rape crisis center, rape hotline, womans shelter, etc. This kind of thing happens every single day and night, often just as violent or even more so than this case. Yes it is absolutely horrible and wretched and I am beyond happy that this is getting awareness and the kids will never have a good life now, but that isnt enough. Educate yourself, educate others, do not tolerate this behavior in your neighborhood, city, state. Make a stand against all types of sexual violence and make a real difference in the lives of many women.

selfreliable reacted to mindovermatter in how do you feel when the seller charged you more than actual shipping fee ?
I know that I am in the minority here, but as a label I do not believe in charging for my time. With each release that I do, I spend hours/days/weeks creating the damn things and sell them for $10. If I were to input my TIME into the equation, some of these projects would be like buying a bar of gold! Those Bad Rabbits 10"s took me easily 1.5 hours EACH to create - multiply that by 275 records...
My ideology continues into shipping. I factor in all costs involved and nothing more. If I overcharge someone, I refund them.
I earn a wage at my day job, and this is a fun hobby for me. I have no problem sacrificing some time for the things that I love.

Allow me to interject on this note.  Do you know why VC gets the reputation you speak of?  It's because it acts as a haven for collectors who want to obtain or sell records, without getting scalped by eBay prices and fees.  Your records have two arbitrary values -- one here at Vinyl Collective, and one on eBay.  I know you're new here, so you'll likely hear the following bit of advice quite often, if you haven't already.  It is a golden rule that thwarts the inane "Don't like the price?  Don't buy it" mentality that so many naïve sellers seem to embrace.  It is my privilege to be the first person to inform you...

If you want eBay prices, list it on eBay.

It's really that simple.  Here at VC, personal transactions don't cost you 10% of your item's value, as they do on eBay auctions.  There is no reserve.  There is no shill bidding.  There is no bullshit.  That's what makes the trade aspect of this community so "tight and friendly".  Granted, there are obviously bad apples in every barrel of everything, ever, I can say that 100% of my VC purchases and sales have involved genuine dudes with fair prices.

A few months back I decided to sell off some variants and duplicates of records I had.  I Popsike'd them beforehand.  I checked current listings on eBay.  Simply put, I did my homework.  And after determining their value, I still made a hell of a deal on most everything.  I sold a few $12 records for $25, even though I could have easily fetched $50 or $60.  Why?  Because it felt good to make a slight profit on my end, naturally, but it was also nice seeing pieces of my collection go to fellow enthusiasts of the medium.  People who, I'm fairly confident, are more likely to enjoy the records than flip them.

Of course, I've also offered up a few gems that received significantly low offers here at VC.  Not lowball offers, necessarily: just very realistic prices on records that fetch unrealistic amounts of money.  There's a fine line between being a good guy who helps out the community, and being oblivious to how much a record is worth.

A little over a month ago I sold a copy of Deja Entendu on eBay.  eBay was my first choice, since the majority of VC members suspect and hope that the record will be repressed next year.  I knew the album's going rates - $200 to $400 on the 'Bay - but I'll be damned if I was going to create a thread asking for that much.  That's just not how it works, you know?  Being that I loved that album, and really needed the funds, I refused to sell myself short.  I needed maximum profit at the time.  And if someone is willing to pay you $400 for an LP, it's not a crime to accept said offer.  But to outright ask for it defeats the purpose of our closely knit community.  If the record didn't mean as much as it did to me, and if the cash wasn't so necessary at the time being, I would have gladly put it in a sale thread here at VC, looking to fetch $120 or so.  That is realistic.  That is a price someone is willing to pay, as it's far below eBay premium.  And that is what VC is about.

I know this post is reading pretty preachy at this point.  And I'm okay with that.  But what you need to become aware of - should you choose to stay around the community for a while - is the value of your records, and how they apply to your audience or buyers.  (That's us.)  You're not a selfish prick for wanting $100+ for a first press Vheissu.  Clearly there are people (still) willing to throw that much money down for one.  But you're not going to find them here.  Exorbitant prices, percentage cuts, and overpriced shipping belongs on eBay.  That's where you'll get the most bang for your buck, and I'd recommend saving your time and breath by listing extravagant BINs there.  But you've waddled your way into VC territory.  And these here parts are filled with friendly faces, mutually-pleasing prices, honest shipping rates, and peace of mind.  I think you'll come to like it if you give it a chance.

first catcher that can play the position since Piazza? Piazza was a terrible catcher. If Cecil Fielder hit a single, he could end up on third with two steals with Mike behind the plate.

This whole board sucks. I wish Flicker would come back and bring some much needed meanness back to the boards.
    2013 board resolutions:
    1. More respect for upstanding labels and distros, less respect for whiny shitheels with 30 posts. Not every label that takes 5 days to ship your record or sends you the wrong thing by accident is "sketchy".
    2. Less talking about your wallets being mad at you. I get it, you're financially irresponsible. Your wallet is probably mad at you because you just bought 5 identical copies of something and you should be buying food.
    3. Less excitement about terrible music from junior high on vinyl. I hated junior high. I have better taste now than I did in junior high. Let's not pretend that the godawful music we all listened to then is worth archiving on vinyl. We have limited resources on this planet, and if any more of them are wasted on Sum 41 records the world is going to start spinning faster in an attempt to throw us all off.
    4. Finally, the ass & titties appreesh threads are gross. Not the content so much as the comments: It is disgusting how quickly men on the internet reduce themselves to high schoolers in a locker room, talking about who you'd feel up and whether some woman's breasts can "make up for her face". It's disgusting. Not to mention that like 30% of the Internet is devoted to showing you naked women in whatever form you can imagine. Go to the nsfw sections of reddit if you want to be casually misogynistic in the company of others.

@selfreliable, here is my list of things: (excellent question)
    1. ring salvation bells for 4 hrs a day over the weekend. (it was bitterly cold here in KS, so i paid dearly for that one)
    2. gather up cans for our local harvesters. i offered a "can for a can" where i would match a beer per canned good. obvi i did this with friends and family at a function and not just a random spot where i would hand out beer. good news is that word got out and i got friends of friends of friends who came and donated.
    3. volunteered at a local church to help pack up/pick up food for local families. i think it was called 'angel drive' or something like that. drove about an hour away, loaded up 4 minivans of food and put them in baskets that people brought through the line.
    4. drove around the bad parts of KC delivering bags of clothes to kids in my sisters class. she teaches in downtown KC, mostly spanish speaking school (our lady of guadalupe) and they literally have nothing. i drove up to their houses, ran up. knocked on door and ran. this seems dangerous thinking about it. saw some pretty bad situations.
    5. the VC record thingy!!
the following are next up on list:
    6. my wife works at nursing home and they always need help. will go in soon and do some kind rearranging furniture in rooms and heavy lifting there. i hope to chat it up with some old timers.
    7. helping the local DAV (disabled american veterans). people donate things in a spot outside and its just stacked and piled with no real order to things. ill move the heavy things like TVs, couches, etc. inside and see what else they need.
    8. this year im buying a goat for a woman. my sister in law wanted this as a gift last year to donate and i liked the idea. http://donate.worldvision.org/OA_HTML/xxwv2ibeCCtpItmDspRte.jsp?section=10401&item=1445884
still thinking of the next two.

I definitely recommend warm clothing items, maybe a "cool brand" or something like that because he may not have the opportunity to ever own something like that. When I was young we were super poor and received gifts from different charities. I wouldn't recommend second hand gifting, only because that's probably the only way the lil' guy gets toys. I know I would have been more excited to own something brand new, to feel like it was only mine.
A couple of years ago I worked for Zumiez and the company owed me around 400 in gift cards, so I called home office to see if they would match that amount if I were to donate it completely to the giving tree (or something of that nature). I ended up getting around 700 worth of warm clothing for the kids. To this day, that is still my favorite Christmas.
As I type this I'm feeling a little nauseous over the amount that I blow on stupid shit that I don't really need that much.
