I like the free market post way up there...
There will always be this discussion on every collectible forum.

Continuum (re: vinyl since this is a vinyl forum):  Pure investor (cares nothing about music/vinyl, just the $$, flippers, 'spoilers' because the collectors are deprived of buying opportunity at decent price)....................................... Pure collector (in it for the music/vinyl/maybe variants, and all have a budget of some sort-- budget envy can be a problem   but whether or not the value goes up or down, the $$ is not an issue, except for the budget)

Sometimes investors eventually fall for the music, and start making giddy-headed purchases that are not good 'investments'.

And sometimes collectors find themselves in a niche they love musically, but also reaps financial rewards come sell time, or if they pick up  duplicate (but not 10, to sell. Maybe one to listen to and one to admire).

Sometimes collectors get really good at the second aspect,  and can fund their hobby, but they're not professional dealers. Better consult you CPA if you're doing a lot of selling, and if it's still a hobby, but even then I think Uncle Sam wants his bite.

Sometimes collectors do become fulltime or vest pocket dealers, and keep the collecting as well (dangerous combo, imho)

Sometimes one finds themselves a pure collector in one genre; and in another a pure investor.  That's when personalities can start to clash if you recognize certain usernames on these sites and discogs and ebaY, trying to figure out the motives.

And when it all boils down to motives, who cares. Let the market decide.

I love King Crimson. When Flaming Lips et al did the "In the Court..." cover, I watched the first sale, the first flip, and then the second flip on ebay, and now a little lull... and we started at $20, went to $30, then to $70-80 range;  now seeing BINs for $125.00

no, I didn't buy or flip, just got an education. I'm more on the collector end of things, could never be a dealer.

    Thanks for reading

Alright.  Thanks to the OP, we've got the annual "should I keep this sealed?" topic out of the way for 2013.  I implore everyone to get your jabs and witty remarks in, now -- I'd really rather not read any more of this shit for the rest of the year.

So there's been so much unneeded hostility on here as of recent, so I was thinking, what might crush that?  Probably the thing that binds all of us as people- we all go through tough shit.  So, with that said, I want to know what bands have gotten you through the tough times, and why.  Because this is my thread, I feel that I can make a couple of rules, the only rule being: no shit talking on someone else's response, so if Good Charlotte's "The Young and the Hopeless" got them through an awful breakup, leave it be.

So here are some of the bands that have gotten me through a bunch of bullshit.  Obviously, because I'm a hopeless romantica art fag, most of these have to do with girls.

Saves the Day- this band has been through every meet, greet, makgirleup, and breakup with a dame.  The first girl I ever thought I was falling for introduced me to "Through Being Cool" and they've been with me ever since.  Key songs: Third Engine, Sell All My Old Clothes I'm Off To Heaven, Nightingale, Jesse and My Whetstone

American Nightmare- I was listening to a lot of tough guy hardcore before I got into these guys, and after reading Eisold's lyrics I was blown away.  I didn't know that those types of songs could be about girls.  "Background Music" is one of the greatest lyrical records ever.  Key songs:  Hearts, (We Are), Postmark My Compass, Crush Of The Year

The Smiths- no one is a sadder bastard than Morrissey, yet he finds a way to put it in the most optimistic of ways.  Any time I'm down in the dumps I can throw on "Strangeways" and be instantly uplifted.  Key songs: Ask, This Charming Man, Girlfriend In A Coma, William, It Was Really Nothing

I'm sure there's a ton more, but these three get me every time.  So let's hear what everyone else has to say, unless you're all too busy making fun of one another; if that's the case, just make fun of me instead.

Or you could realize how much of a jackass it made you look like instead of defending it. Tons of good people got their orders cancelled and you got eight. That's like building a five story house in Africa and being like "look how much more money I have than all you people". It's incredibly inconsiderate.

Wow, people are far too comfortable with hyperbolizing rape.

The clear difference, idiots, is that people willingly paid money for a marked up record. There is no rape occurring.

Not a rant at all. An extreme sales drop would/should drop prices in theory, but also cause a lot of labels to pull out of the business if they weren't taking much in.

It was a reference to the trend loving demographic that Hot Topic appeals to. Fun are the newest in a line of bands that cater to the tone deaf who find Fall Out Boy and Paramore to be musically enjoyable. People like my sister listen to fun, who only like music because it is upbeat and she can sing along to it. Anyway, this band rulez. I hope I can be front row in the pit of scene kids and little girls at their next show. Hopefully they have a sik stage show, because who goes to shows for music anyway? Shows are all about good times, good brews and good bitches.

i have, but it was outside a one story house and the boombox was playing flotsam and jetsam's version of "saturday night's all right for fighting". I got a free homemade dinner and made a very bummed out girl very happy.

this guy is now at the top of the worst/most annoying people here totem pole. can't wait for your next thread! will it be about worrying if a record you want is a bootleg but you buy it anyway, wanting to know the pressing info for marky mark and the funky bunch or i'm devastated because a record i ordered 5 minutes ago that has jesse lacey's pubes mixed in didn't ship yet. the suspense is killing me.

The way I look at people like that is this: simply replying cogently and briefly to their unfounded, misguided claims sets the record straight and puts him/her in their place.

I learned long ago to never spend more than five minutes on a response to someone on a message board. Most likely, it'll fall on deaf ears or someone will just post a funny gif, of which neither nullify or dismiss one's claim but somehow render it void nevertheless.
