OodMeister
So recently, I stumbled on a 70s era Discwasher, with some D4 fluid from before the RCA rebranding. Some collectors I respected told me that the fluid is still safe to use on records. I saw no immediate problem upon using the fluid, but now there are a bunch of people telling me that it wasn't safe, and that surpassing the shelf life of 2 or 3 years is possibly damaging to your records. Now I'm worried that I've done some sort of damage that I just don't notice yet.Any help? Something in that bottle has almost certainly evaporated or broken down in the last 20 years.
jhulud
Never used the stuff. But something that old wouldn't be as effective and may even be harmful at this point.
scottheisel
Try swapping out the fluid for some doublewhiskeycokenoice: maneatingcow, kurtz and Moglog

monsterrod
Dillinger Four song. I would have thought that was right in the VC wheelhouse.
Bladewillisisdead
It's literally acid by now. Call a hazmat team. Tommy
webdoggy
Eh, I've got some D4 that is from the early 80's. Have used it on records with no problems, immediate nor delayed.

If you went into the cupboard and saw something from the 70's would you eat it to save a buck?
Bladewillisisdead
Yeah, I'm not a scientist but it seems unlikely it'd be harmful. If anything it just won't be as effective.
Bladewillisisdead
Also, D4 fluid is like $5.
throughbeingcruel
So pumped on the Dillinger reference haha
webdoggy
On a side note, I've seen vintage D4 sell for a pretty premium over the new stuff. People claim it is better than the "new formula." Never used the new stuff myself, so can't comment/compare.
One Hundred Fifty-Two
Seems like such a non-issue. Just buy new fluid. D4 rocks.

Not to ruin your analogy but a bottle of distilled water and a little isopropyl has a much better shot of being the exact same stuff you put in the bottle 40 years ago than any food product does.
