axisrecapital
Not sure how this never made it on the boards, but Mark Lanegan has a new 2 LP coming out called Songs of Sorrow. Two singles have been released and there are two variants coming out, black and clear (indie exclusive) A few pre-orders: 1) Heavenly for the UK and EU (limited Clear Vinyl..same as indie exclusive): https://heavenlyemporium.com/release/177150-mark-lanegan-straight-songs-of-sorrow?format=502303 2) Rough Trade (Clear and Black): https://www.roughtrade.com/us/mark-lanegan/straight-songs-of-sorrow Everyone else has links and it is easy to find... Following the success of last year’s ‘Somebody’s Knocking’ LP, Mark Lanegan has announced the news of his new solo album, ‘Straight Songs Of Sorrow’, released 8th May. The album, which is closely aligned to his forthcoming memoir, “Sing Backwards And Weep”, features guest appearances from Greg Dulli, Warren Ellis, John Paul Jones, Ed Harcourt and more. The first pressing will be a crystal clear vinyl edition. Double Vinyl – Gatefold - Downloads available with each LP purchase. Standard CD also available. When considering any great work of art, it’s natural to wonder what might have inspired it: ‘the story behind the song’. Mark Lanegan’s new album, ‘Straight Songs Of Sorrow’, flips that equation. Here are 15 songs inspired by a story: his life story, as documented by his own hand in his new memoir, ‘Sing Backwards And Weep’. The book is a brutal, nerve-shredding read, thanks to Lanegan’s unsparing candour in recounting a journey from troubled youth in eastern Washington, through his drug-stained existence amid the ’90s Seattle rock scene, to an unlikely salvation at the dawn of the 21st century. There’s death and tragedy, yet also humour and hope, thanks to the tenacity which impels its host, even at his lowest moments. ‘Straight Songs Of Sorrow’ combines musical trace elements from early Mark Lanegan albums with the synthesized constructs of later work. The album feels both definitive and unique, a culmination of its creator’s arc yet also indicative of the energy that drives him onto future horizons. No wonder Lanegan is proud. scarfaceclaw
Liking these tunes better than anything he's released since Blues Funeral - the bio story helps I think - looking forward to the album.
morfiend
His new book arrives tomorrow, I can’t wait to read it. Judging by how some of the Screaming Trees guys are reacting to it I think we can close the book on a possible reunion.

Seems like Mark doesn't want to relive the past. At all.

Yeah, I'm actually surprised he wrote this book, especially knowing it had to lead to some hard feelings. I always held out hope the Trees would get back together just like most of the really well known Seattle bands from that era have. When Lanegan and Pickeral did a couple of shows together in Ellensburg their hometown, that gave me hope. Oh well. My book just arrived a day early, a nice surprise. apirk
There is a good interview with Mark on Joseph Arthur’s podcast where he talks about the book
morfiend
I finished the book, it was quite a read and Mark pulls no punches about anybody especially himself. The new album is... odd, at least on first listen but hopefully it grows on me. I’d been listening to a lot of Screaming Trees and Mark’s old solo records while reading the book so maybe my expectations got a little out of whack. Mr Mojo
I have loved everything Lanegan has done up till the last album "Somebody's Knocking". I was really disappointed. So I hesitated before I pre ordered "Straight Songs Of Sorrow", but when I saw there was a ltd vinyl I couldn't stop myself. But after listening to the album for the first time I wish I had. I'm sorry, but he has moved in a direction that I just can't follow...it's not good at all, and it makes me kinda sad.
axisrecapital
Me...I'm the opposite. I love that Mark mixes it up so often. There are some fantastic tracks on this record, but it feels like it is a hodgepodge of songs that could have been pulled from other records. It is a mixed bag for sure and I might have changed the tracklisting, but the more i listen to it, the better it gets.
morfiend
The second half of this new record has been growing on me a lot but I'm having a hard time with the first half, especially track 1. I'm all for Mark experimenting as well but his records have been really hit and since the fantastic Blues Funeral.

"What about Mark Lanegan?" has always been my go-to response when someone says that Eddie Vedder is the only one left from the glory days of grunge. Now I don't know what I'll say. morfiend
One of the greatest, a true legend. This is a tough day. Mark Arm and Tad are about all we have left from that era. twatay
