oakland
OK, just so we're all clear, their called records, not vinyl. Here's some examples. Correct: "I collect vinyl. I have about 500 records." Incorrect: "I'm going to the record store today to buy some vinyl." That is about the stupidest sounding thing I've ever heard.
steventangent
the plural of "vinyl" is "vinyl"
robotnerd
seriously, i knew a kid in high school that would ask me "how many vinyl do you have?" and was constantly trying to make it a contest to see who had more "vinyl". bugged the crap out of me. aarondanger
What about 7"s? Who calls them 45's? I just call everything "records" even cd's
steventangent
What about 7"s?Who calls them 45's? I just call everything "records" even cd's Old people call them 45s. The vinyl industry did go through a format war at one time. In fact, "78s" weren't even called "78s" until "33s" came out and there was a need to distinguish. flood
I call them 45s. 7" is generally more correct, just because most punk 7"s are 33rpm these days and not 45rpm and yeah anyone who pluralizes vinyl with an "s" just makes me cringe. skumbucket
i call them seven inches, but i only have a couple that are 33 instead of 45...
neil
I call them 45s. I call them 45s when I'm talking to my parents, and 7"s when talking to friends :]

tim
the plural of "vinyl" is "vinyl" Not really. Vinyl is a non-count noun. It doesn't have a plural form. Just as there's no plural of air, soil, or music. So vinyl is not the plural of vinyl the same way fish is the plural of fish.
steventangent
jesus, talk about nitpickery. the point is, when you have more than one, you don't call it 'vinyl'.
beef
What about 7"s?Who calls them 45's? robotnerd
to me, record is a confusing term, b/c it can be applied to both a piece of music, and an artifact. and i do tend to use it for both. although i think the term album is more applicable to the piece of music than record is. oakland
IF it has a big hole in the middle, it's a 45. Unless it plays at 33. But a 12", at any speed, is a 12" or LP. Not a 45.

moonbeams
On my ebay descriptions I write, "vinyl is in near mint condition," but I'm referring to the state of the vinyl material, not the album as "a vinyl."
