RSD 2013: Tell your stories and share what you bought here!

Recommended Posts

There isn't a record store within 70 miles of Auburn Alabama but my day I got a surprise visit from my dad and ended a 30ish year tradition and rolled toomers trees with a hell of a lot of people! Found a guy on this site and said he was picking up a few extras and i luckily bought Linkin Park off of him for 38 bucks! Great weekend for me!

I went to Darkside Records in Poughkeepsie, NY. Opened at 9 and I got there at 8:30 which I thought would be good enough, but nope. Waited two hours to get in the store, hoping to pick up Relationship of Command and Hybrid Theory... I watched the last copy of Relationship of Command get sold to the person in front of me...that sucked. The only RSD release I was able to get (for myself) was Bayside: Live at the Bayside Social Club. Picked up Nick Drake for a friend. While I was there I also bought Tenacious D's first album and the new Justin Timberlake album.

Since it was RSD I later stopped by the record stores in my town (New Paltz), grabbed Foals - Holy Fire for a friend. Got Elliott Smith - S/T and Black Sabbath - Paranoid for myself.

Ended up getting Hybrid Theory for $45 online, still on the search for a copy of Relationship of Command that's under $50.

. I'm from the paltz as well, I was planning on going to dark side but I saw thy jacks got in everything I wanted so I went there really early and managed toget everything I wanted (including atdi)

I got in line at Sqaure Records in Akron at 915ish. They opened at their normal time, 11. I was roughly the 25th person in line. They were only letting 15 people or so in at a time. By the time I got in, all the things I was hoping for were gone. We went to 4 other places and they were all picked over pretty well. I decided to make the hour trip up to the Cleveland area and go to Record Den where I got a few things. They still had a ton of stuff by the time I got up there, 3ish. Went out again today to see if I could find anything else and picked up some more. Here is the lot of it:

I grabbed the Sub Pop album for another person but they ended up not needing it. So I am going to try and trade it.

i haven't heard a thing from strictly discs. i ordered straylight run from them back in early march, so i'm hoping it will get fulfilled. i'll give them a week and then call.

they're going to start filling orders today. probably no call/no email, you'll just see a charge if they're sending you anything.

I never found the one record I really wanted to find, the Yep Roc Heresy 12"/DVD set, because only 310 were made.

Now I managed to track down a record store in Allentown, PA, Double Decker, that says it still has TWO of them in stock...and the punchline is, they're the only record store on the planet that doesn't do mail order these days. Sigh.

I'm probably going to go back to Wuxtry tomorrow after I get off work, and if they still have something that I know someone here is still looking for, I'll pick it up and make another post or a thread in the Buy/Sell forum.

Nice to see that most people got what they wanted this time around.

Did Wuxtry make a vinyl RSD Compilation this year? They have been killer in the past.

are you in NYC? if so, Double Decker is one of the few record stores I'd say is worth the drive into PA.

I'm pretty sure I've read this whole thread and don't recall seeing anyone say they picked up the clear RSD exclusive version of Elliott (not Smith) - Songs In A Transit Wind. I'm guessing maybe it didn't get done in time. Did anyone even see it?

i've seen it around online, such as at Deathwish's site. Maybe try ordering from there?

Went pretty light this year and only made 1 stop.

Record Den in Mentor, OH (always the best spot for RSD)

New Found Glory - Mania (got the red/yellow marble)

Their/They're/There - Their/They're/There

The Hold Steady - Criminal Fingers 7" (feat. the song from Game of Thrones)

Online

Paramore - The Holiday Sessions 7"

Straylight Run - Prepare to be Wrong

Missed Out On

At the Drive In - RoC

Botch - American Nervoso

Flaming Lips - Zaireeka (they had tons, but I wasn't about to drop $70 on that)

All in all pretty successful, and I didn't even have to stand outside in the 40 degree and snowy Ohio weather for very long!

Today I went to my local record store to see what they've got left since I was out of town until this morning.

The only thing they had that I was looking for was the Boysetsfire 7".

They wanted almost $20 for the record, and of course, I didn't buy it.

Dear God! And i thought it was a rip off at the $8-9 i saw it going for elsewhere. That was one of the few things i wanted, too. Oh well.

Just left Everybody's in Cincinnati.
Remaining stuff that stood out (meaning I've seen a lot of talk about them):

1 Bayside live 2xlp

TONS of Coheed demos (20+)

Deftones live (10+/-)

Tons of Walk the Moon

Straylight Run

Linkin Park (6+/-)

Gaslight Deluxe CD

Of course there's a bunch of others left but like I said, this was what stood out to me.

As far as my experiences go with Record Store Day, it is one of the most annoying things in life of a record collector from Germany.

Most of the stuff I want is not even available over here or it is overpriced. I know what's the idea behind RSD, but sometimes there is a reason why it is better to buy your records online. Sorry!

when did this go online?

i'm bummed i missed this.

Went up on the FBR store around 11:30 Eastern. Luckily I got home from RSD right at that time and had the FBR page open and was able to score one. I heard it was up for about 30 min before Hayley tweeted about it which then sold out shortly afterwards.

I really didn't expect to get it at all since they only had 400 copies for sale online (300 at the physical store) and that seemed like such a small number compared to the size of their fanbase.

I went to a local shop and stood in line at 9, they opened at 10.  There were only a few people in front of me.  They only had a few things that I wanted but they seemed to have a decent amount of stuff.  Fortunately I have a friend that owns a record store and I made a list and he got most of what I wanted, the rest I was able to find online.

Long Story:

I called the night before to make sure that all the records i wanted were gonna be there. They were cool and told me how many of each one they had. I got to Schoolkids around 7am, about an hour before it opened. There were about 30 people in line ahead of me. Started up conversations with "So, what are you here to get?" and that pretty much kept the dialog going for the next hour. Owner came out and explained the rules: you're in line, stay in line from here to the aisles to the cash register, don't cut ahead, wait and be patient. Only 1 copy per person. He's a great guy, everyone here loves that he owns the store now. Everything for RSD was down the middle aisle in alphabetical order; 12", 7", dvd's, swag, etc.

Only one annoying complaint i'd like to file here: I knew what i wanted, so when i flipped through the bins it was easy to find everything. It's pretty simple when all the titles are together, when you see what the first one is, you can just flip forward all 10-20 copies to the next color jacket. Well, there was a guy about 4 people ahead of me who fingered each title and each album like every one was different and he had to see it, very slowly. I'd understand if he was lookin for a variant or a numbered edition, but that wasn't the case here. Half-way down the aisle, one guy behind him asked him if he could skip ahead of him. He starts to remind the guy that cutting wasn't allowed, but this dude wasn't asking, he went straight around him to the check-out line. Ok so we're all standing there waiting for this guy to touch every album in the store, the line in front of him as moved on and checked out, the line behind me is starting to lean around to see what the hold up is. I've had the opportunity to pick up a few albums i wasn't even interested in, but since they line isn't moving and i'm just standing there; might as well read all the cover labels on that Flaming Lips box set...(if only my parents had a trust fund in my name). Then i notice the next two guys finally just go around him. So i'm the next guy now and this dude is sweating. The kind of sweat that started to pour down his face in streams. He's dripping on records!  it wasn't like it was hot inside the store. After standing out in the cold, it was actually very comfortable inside. He was on the last bin before the 7"s and i finally said "hey, man i'm just gonna step around you to the 7"s and let you finish" to which he starts to huff and shake his head, which makes more sweat fall on records... I grabbed the ones i wanted and got out.

I'm not sayin the dude was wrong, i'm just tryin to tell a story here. relating an experience. This guy was sweating out on RSD!
