Capsuletaker
Hey guys, This is Christopher (guitarist/keys of Cathedral Ring). I just wanted to jump in and drop a few lines about the ad in question. First I just want to say thanks for actually checking it out and sharing. We appreciate that we are even being discussed by people who actually know the genre. Also thanks for pointing out that overall we just sound like "ourselves". We are not out to bite anyone's sound or ride any coatails. Obviously we have a ton of influences but if the take away from a listen was we're just us that's a hell of a compliment or a good jab if you hate it, haha. As for the ad, I think abovetheearth summed it up quite well but to further clarify. It was a simple FFO: (insert staples). There was no "Sounds like..." anywhere in that ad or in any ad we've ever run. Basically due to the way Facebook operates it's difficult to reach people when your advertising budget is smaller so you kind of work within these frustrating cookie cutter parameters in order to reach as many people as possible. Personally I hate when albums I buy come with stickers listing other bands on them but I get why they work. Essentially that ad was just letting people know these guys are instrumental. We don't want to mislead people who hate that style while also attempting to reach those who love it. That's where those staples come into play because as we all know, even those who don't have a clue tend to recognize something like EITS. It's just a reference point or a flag that says this is or isn't for you. Anyway I know TLNR. These days, if a band has a FFO: EITS tag, I might not even listen to it. Already that shows no effort to distance themselves from any other post-rock groups, and that's before I've even listened to their music. I'd rather form my own tastes. Now, when albums are rec'd to me it's a little different. Generally this comes on forums like these where we're all passably familiar with each other's tastes so somebody can hear something, identify a similarity, and tag another person who would appreciate it in a Bandcamp link or what have you. Important not to overdo this, though. Right on! I'm always very curious about how other people think, so thank you for your response. I'm absolutely 100% with you on the EITS tag... they're kind of the catch-all for post-rock that isn't Godspeed or Sigur Ros. And in my opinion, there are so many bands who are so much better than EITS. It's kind of funny though, because I remember reading an article about them in some magazine maybe like 10 years ago and being absolutely entranced by the description of what they did with their music. The writer made it seems like they were making these big sweeping instrumental improvisations, which really appealed to me because I was firmly in the jamband obsession at that point... so it makes sense that I ended up here eventually anyway, so many years later. Freki
I expect bands would use tags that a would be recognizable to a wider audience than the super-niche post-rock fanbase. Can't hold it against them.

Appleseed stayed at our place a few years ago after a show and we all had a pretty good laugh at that one. It was an unfortunate coincidence as we were formed/named in 2012 and Illumination Ritual came out in 2013. Basically Chris and I are both weird guys who apparently watch way too much National Geographic channel (long not funny story about where CR or CR's come from). However we do love that band so if people think we got it from there we can live with ourselves because at least we aren't Godsmack who managed to steal the name and the sound. P.S. How much does a Godsmack vinyl run these days? Asking for a friend. Edited March 16, 2017 by Capsuletaker mrewest

Ironically that would be so much easier than trying to ask anyone to believe that wasn't the case. In hindsight it's hilarious but at the time I was sitting there with a guy who inspired me greatly discussing freaking Redwood trees and a trivial coincidence. I'm like I want to get into the deep stuff like how you recorded LLO 1&2, tones, pedals, drum sounds but this elephant in the room has to be stuffed and mounted for my own sanity. Sorry I added an "S" on Illumination Ritual. Just blame ~~~voodoo, voodoo~~~
batman
So I checked out that band, because I heard they sound like EITS and Caspian. But my record came with scratches all over it, like a bear gouged it. I think I hear a riff that sounds like The Appleseed Cast though. SO WOW OMG MUCH AMAZE. mrewest, abovetheearth and Sad Heart

I was REALLY, REALLY into them when the first album came out (god I don't want to think about how long ago that was) and the 2nd album was fine too but I didn't get into it as much, and then my tastes progressed towards things like Fear Factory, Morbid Angel, Suffocation, and Immortal quite rapidly haha. Anyway, thanks for posting in here! Maybe I misspoke in reference to the ad, I can't remember now whether i said FFO or "sounds like". Either way, I dug your stuff! I still stand by my assertion that if GIAA played darker stuff it would kind of sound like what you sound like (at least Northeastern Track Marks)! Which I guess is another way to say you sound like yourselves, because GIAA doesn't play dark doomy stuff. The feel of all the instruments working together and your mix/production values just give me a big GIAA vibe; they "look" the same to me in my head (just my own weird way of making references/relationships in my mind haha) Edit: **loving** the drums on "I'm Frozen and You're Dead" Edited March 17, 2017 by Gumbo72203

It was a little joke about the whole name thing. Godsmack had a similar situation due to Alice In Chains having a song called "God Smack" but it went deeper due to the logo, sound etc. They came up with a ridiculous story when asked about the name. It's honestly pretty funny and I'm sure it's floating around google somewhere. Definitely worth the read. As for the second part no worries I don't really read the details of every ad I see either so that stuff happens. The point is you gave it a chance and then shared it. Those things help a lot so thanks for doing that. Lastly music is subjective and different people hear different things. I feel like it's natural to compare new things to something you already know or look for influences within it. At the end of the day I can't tell you what it is or isn't because those things are up to the listener.
