veggiecorecords
Thanks for the info. To my ears, it is an obvious mastering issue, but I'm not a professional, so I'd love to hear the thoughts of others. There is evident clipping and (unintended) distortion that are almost surely the result of too much volume. I didn't take notice who produced it before you posted, but it's interesting that the wiki post mentions criticism from excessive clipping from volume during mastering. interesting for sure....even more interesting is that Thursday went back to him for the next two full lengths. I wonder if they ever addressed these criticisms in an interview or anything, it'd be an interesting topic to hear their side and Fridmanns.. sharkticon
I'm no crazy audiophile, but this is definitely sounding flat to me. I'm only 3 songs in, but the vocals are a bit buried compared to the tracks I have on my iTunes and the guitars are really fuzzy and low. Geoff has many times stated they're very happy with the way it came out, and preferred the production to that of WATT.
One Hundred Fifty-Two
I've stated several times before that I can not stand Dave Fridmann. I have thought most my issues with later Thursday material had more to do with the production than the band.

I know they had a shitty relationship in general with Island for WATT, and I'm sure that's soured a lot of their thoughts on the recording process, but wow. I remember when the 5 songs leaked for ACBTLD. I was stoked to hear the songs, but the quality was shit. I chocked it up to be badly compressed encodes for a leak. I was amazed when I bought the album and it sounded just as bad. There is some great material on this album, but I find it really hard to listen to because of the production/mastering issues. I also don't listen to much of their recent material. Maybe a lot of that has to do with the production.
stuffsux00
the quality on this is awesome! the vocals are nowhere near as drowned as on the CD version. i can hear everything. listening on a 5.1 system.
llamason56
My order on HT says Auto-Checked. Never have seen this before. My payment is pending in PayPal so I'm assuming my order hasn't gone through yet?
monk0nuggets
Now you guys have me worried about how this sounds, but personally, I always loved how the CD sounded. Yes, there is clipping and added distortion, but it helped give character to the record for me.
njpunkmusic
I love how fast HT ships stuff. Already got mine today. Spinning it right now and it looks and sounds amazing. The only thing that bothers me is Side A stops after Sugar in the Sacrament and you gotta flip it to get to At This Velocity. I always loved how it just jumped right into "WE WERE SAFE!" Oh well, not anyone's fault obviously.
daniel
Yeah I love the way this record sounds. Same goes for Common Existence and No Devolucion.
rickydenim
As much as it's not a conventional mix, I think they were trying to make a "sound" with Fridmann. They want the heaviness to be chaotic and overdone to create a contrast to the pretty stuff. That's always been my thoughts anyway. It sounds normal to me now. scottheisel
Got my copy today, it's on the turntable now. Sounds huge, chaotic, beautiful, dissonant and at times unlistenable -- which is why I love this record so much.
throwgncpr
I don't really understand that. you can still have a chaotic and heavy sound, and maintain the dynamic range without losing audio information. To each their own though. So does the record sound the same as the CD in terms of the mix and dynamic range?

dreamover
just finished listening to it. this record, of course has a different sound than their earlier stuff. it translated well though. sounds great for what it is. i rediscovered this record about a year ago. i think i'll spin this one more than a lot of my records. "good job" to all involved.
sporkthrumyheart
I think the audio issues are what made it difficult for me to get into the album when it was first released, and while there are songs that I really enjoy, I never gave it a fair enough listen. I think the vinyl release will help me make up for that. That being said, I absolutely love their later work. No Devolución was definitely a high note to go out on. makeshiftrigger
Mine had a mad amount of bubble wrap to keep it steady inside the box made for like 4 hardback novels. Sucks yours was damaged. I wasn't sure I could get to the record through all the packaging. Overall impressed with HT packaging
