I think it'd be a better system to just "lock it in" once you get to that point. I know overselling is a problem for SOME cart systems, but I've seen some get hit with super heavy traffic on super limited items and take it fine doing that. You throw it in the cart, it's locked in (if you're a registered buyer), you have about 5 min. to complete check out before they boot it from your cart.
