We took it from one of my girlfriend's coworkers so it wouldn't have to go to a shelter. i once had a cat from a shelter that acted similar. it was a tomcat and was acting weird b/c it had recently gotten neutered. the first week i had him, he bolted out the door and was gone for like 3-4 days. then, he suddenly reappeared. the first year was rough, but he eventually came around. good luck with that.
